Principal’s Note

Welcome to Week 6 of Term 3 with the Term already more than half way completed!

We are now entering the time of Term when students are either in an assessment phase (Seniors, particularly those on an ATAR pathway will be experiencing this) or moving into this period. As a school we aim to support our students to be successful through the provision of good quality teaching and learning as well as helping them to be as organised as possible.

Assessment calendars are available on the school website and students should also be using a school diary or personal organiser to help keep track of dates and subject expectations. Homework Club is another great way for students to check in with their teachers to ensure they are ready for upcoming assessments or to further consolidate their learning.

As I so often point out your support in this and the general engagement of your child in school life are vital and always appreciated! If you have any questions or concerns please contact the teacher, even better if you encourage your child to regularly check in and ask questions in class.

Noosa Film Academy visit

We have been very fortunate to recently welcome the Noosa Film Academy to school. This group has been visiting Charleville SHS for two years now with the aim of ensuring students in the outback can experience similar opportunities to those in urban areas.

Last Friday (13th August) the year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to make a short film under the expertise of professionals. Andrea and Greg were very impressed with our students, staff and school in general. The team made numerous positive comments about the level of respect shown by our students and how inspiring it was to work with them.

The short film produced will debut at the Charleville SHS Awards Night on October 20th and we look forward to sharing the great work our students have contributed to. For further information and some pictures please check out the Junior School Deputy Principal section.

School event photography or videos

It is fantastic to see so many parents and caregivers attending school events and we very much enjoy the opportunities to share our great school with the community. One of the somewhat challenging aspects around these activities is taking photos or videoing students. I have consulted with the department and can confirm you are absolutely ok to take images of your own child/children at school events with a few points to please consider.

To support each other and respect individual privacy please only take or upload photos of your own children on social media sites. Please be very aware of putting up photos of other children, particularly if they are in school uniform. If you intend to upload a photograph of students other than your own please, as a matter of courtesy, first seek consent from the other children’s parents.

If there are other children in the photo or background of the photo – in school uniform – you are asked to blur their faces or use some of the many stickers available in photo apps so the children are not identifiable. We ask for your assistance in this matter as some families, for a variety of reasons, may not wish to have their children identified on social media sites.

Some pleasing data trends

As we continue our focus on consistent improvement I thought I would share some analysis from Semester 1 learning outcomes. For our Junior Secondary students (Years 7 – 10) English results have improved by nearly two percentage points since Semester 1 2020 and for Mathematics the gain has been 3.5 percentage points.

Whilst these are certainly not extravagant in terms of gains they do reflect the steady improvement we have been targeting as a sustainable improvement that also aligns with our focus on authentic implementation of the Australian Curriculum and rigorous moderation to ensure standards are high.

For our Senior students we continue to see strong performances with almost all students well on track to achieve their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Many of them will achieve far in excess of the 20 points required to complete this vital aspect of Senior Schooling and I commend the efforts of students to ensure they are on track for success.

For any students who are struggling we have an extensive support structure in place with a case manager allocated for each individual. Mrs Kohli (Senior School Deputy Principal) and myself review progress weekly in our line management meetings and adjustments are made to ensure we are doing everything we can to support students in attaining their QCE.

Potential change to break times for 2022

This information has been included for a second newsletter to maximise opportunities for feedback.

Currently we have three break times each day for students, 10.10am – 10. 40am, 11.50am – 12.20pm and 1.30pm – 1.45pm. After initial consultation with the P&C and staff we are considering adjusting this in 2022 to two breaks a day with school start and finish times remaining the same as 2021. The reason behind this is to maximise the learning time available in the morning, often this is a highly valued time for teaching as the students are fresher and more actively engaged.

The actual amount of break times would not change in terms of the minutes allocated, students would still receive 75 minutes per day, and we would need to take additional factors into consideration such as the amount of time between arriving at school and having an opportunity for a snack or accessing toilets. At this stage we are seeking any feedback from parents regarding this proposal and also any suggestions around the timing of breaks to support student learning and wellbeing.

Each day consists of four 70-minute periods and 10 minutes for Form (roll marking and notices). The basic idea is to have Period 1 and 2 before first break (35 minutes) then Period 3 followed by second break (35 minutes) and finally Period 4. The placement of Form class is one way we can provide a break between Period 1 and 2 and we can also allow 5 minutes to move between classes. Some possible structures include:

Example A

Example B

Form

Period 1

5-minute interval to move between classes

Period 2

Break 1 (35 minutes)

Period 3

Break 2 (35 minutes)

Period 4

Period 1

Form – 15 minutes (could include snack break for younger students)

Period 2

Break 1 (35 minutes)

Period 3

Break 2 (35 minutes)

Period 4

Please feel free to contact me via email or by calling the school if you have any questions, feedback or suggestions. Another great way to give input is through the P&C either by attending or chatting with one of the P&C Executive members. We will continue to seek feedback throughout Term 3 before making any decisions on this consideration and I will work closely with the P&C to ensure we have a considered decision if any changes are to be made.

In Closing

Each time we receive positive feedback from school guests and visitors I reflect on just how much pride I have in our students and our fantastic school community. This is achieved through a lot of hard work and a key driver is the relationships between school, home and the broader community. Together we provide the foundation for our kids to have the best chance of success, both at school and in the transition to post-school life, thanks again for the role that each of you play in this.

All the best,

Barry Wallett

Year 12 Students – ATAR Registration and QTAC Reminder

A reminder that students can now register for access to their ATAR and can complete their QTAC application. Information is available for students and parents around registering for the ATAR from the link below and the following video explains the steps to complete:

https://qtac.edu.au/atar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZt7Zot0gZc

I strongly encourage students select the option that allows their school to view their ATAR as this allows us to offer support to students with their QTAC preferences after the ATAR’s are released.

Some students and parents have already spoken with Mrs Kohli regarding appointments to discuss QTAC applications and preferences. A reminder that students and parents are welcome to make appointments to speak with the Deputy, Guidance Officer or Industry Liaison Officer to assist with this process. Please contact the office if you are wanting an appointment.

Year 11 Students – Leadership

Year 11 students have now received their leadership nomination forms on parade (students who were absent can collect one from the office). These need to be completed and returned to Mrs Kohli by Thursday of week 7 (26th of August).

Students who nominate will be required to give a speech (3 minutes) at the senior parade in week 8. The theme of the speech is their vision for Charleville State High School in 2022.

Students are encouraged to consider nominating and to think about what they can contribute to the school community.

Year 10 Students – QCE Points

While year 10’s are not yet in year 11 or 12, they have a number of opportunities to earn some QCE points while they are in year 10 that will greatly assist them once they enter their senior schooling.

Students who selected Hospitality as a subject are able to earn 2 QCE points if they successfully complete the program of study in year 10.

However, all year 10 students are working toward a Certificate 2 in Active Volunteering through their senior pathways class. If this is successfully completed, students will earn 4 QCE points.

Students are strongly encouraged to work toward completing this as it will set them up for success through year 11 and 12 as they work toward 20 QCE points.

2021 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2020, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2021.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

Junior School

Welcome to week 6.

2021 Year seven students

In the near future, Ms Roughan, Mr Razbeau and myself will give a presentation to the students and parents of potential year seven students in 2022. There will be another presentation in term 4 for parents with advice on preparation for the first week in 2022.

Contact Details

Are your contact details up to date at the school? Please call the office or send a note if you have had a change in address or phone number. It is important that we are able to contact you at all times.

Uniforms

It is wonderful to see the majority of students wear the correct uniform to school. The school has been very understanding in giving families plenty of time to acquire the correct uniform. The school also has many items of unnamed lost property which we keep for one term. It is then donated to charity. If students are still wearing the incorrect to school which do not abide by the school uniform guidelines as written and supported by the CSHS P&C then detentions may be issued. You may refer to the back page of the student diary for details on the correct school uniform. Please note: Blue jeans is not school uniform. Please support the P&C and Charleville State High School by ensuring your student has correct uniform every day.

Student Services

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

We would like to remind everyone that students are not allowed to use their mobile phones at school. This includes senior students. Year seven, eight and nine students are not allowed to have a phone at school. If the family believe it is necessary for their student to have a mobile phone in their possession travelling to and from school, the office is very happy to keep the phones for safe keeping. The student may hand the phone in before school and collect it at 2:55pm in the afternoon.

If a senior student uses their phone at school then they are requested to hand their phone in to the office to be collected by a parent/carer. The inappropriate use of a mobile phone is occasionally reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student will be prevented from bringing their phone to school. It is the parents’ / carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

Please note that if a student uses a mobile device to film another student or staff member at school then serious consequences may occur. It is illegal to film anyone without their consent. Posting images of students in school uniform on social media is also prohibited.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours. It is concerning the number of students on school grounds out of school hours. It is essential that children be adequately supervised at all times.

Immunisation Clinic

An Immunisation Clinic will be held soon for the year seven students and for those students who are not up to date. We are very fortunate to have an excellent working relationship with Queensland Health to help the students have their immunisation up to date by holding clinics at the school.

Noosa Film Academy

The Noosa Film Academy have been visiting Charleville SHS for two years. They are able to apply for grants to ensure students in the outback can experience similar opportunities as those in urban areas.

On Friday 13th August, the year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to make a short film under the expertise of professionals. Andrea and Greg were very impressed with our students, staff and school in general. In fact, they stated that our students were very respectful and inspiring with their creativity. The short film will debut at the Charleville SHS Awards Night on October 20th. Below is part of the email I received from Andrea Huglin and a few pictures as a preview:

Dear Narelle, Laura, Kristyana and Sue,

What an incredible day we shared with you all. I want to thank you for helping us deliver an amazing filmmaking experience. The light in the library was perfect and we really appreciated you organising it.

I have also attached some photos and student feedback from the day. I hope that you are able to use the film to showcase the incredible work of both students and teachers at awards night. In the interim we would very much appreciate it if you could use the photos to create a post for your Facebook page and tag us. It really helps to gain future funding.

Please pass on our thanks to all the students for their hard work, maturity and respect throughout the day. The improv skills of all the students were really outstanding, they had such incredible amounts of creativity and we hope we were able include all the clever and imaginative ideas.

With any luck we will have inspired a few to embrace opportunities for digital entrepreneurship and offered some useful screen production advice.

Thank you again for the warmth of your welcome and your kind-hearted hospitality.

With much gratitude

Until next time,

Narelle Webb
Deputy Principal

Rube Goldberg Machines in 7-8 MESH Science

The students had an opportunity to explore the concepts of physics using everyday waste to create their own simple machines. These machines are called Rube Goldberg machines and originated from a New York cartoonist who liked to make elaborate machines to perform simple tasks. The students had 70 minutes to create a machine that moved a ball 2m. It was definitely harder than they expected but the class showed great creativity and team work.
