PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

TERM 3 2017

Term 3 has now commenced, and this is always an extremely busy and important term, especially for our Year 12 students.

Later this term, Year 12’s will be sitting their QCS tests (Queensland Core Skills Tests), a series of very important tests, which all Year 12 students can sit, but which all OP (Overall Position) eligible students must sit for if they are to be considered eligible for an OP.

Term 3 also sees all of the Year 12 assessment, up until this point, sent away to panels for “Verification”, to ensure that marks given for the work produced is correct – a process that helps ensure consistency of grades across each school in the State of Queensland. The marks given at this time go a long way to determining the final marks for each Year 12 student, and so it is absolutely essential that assessment this term is of the highest level for each student, to ensure the absolute best educational outcomes for each and every Year 12 student. I wish every student the best as they head into this crucial stage of their two years of senior study.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Thank you to all parents who took the time to attend the Parent/Teacher interviews last week. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, these evening are such an important opportunity for parents and teachers to sit down and discuss each student’s education, and the parent/teacher relationship is such a significant part of a student’s success.

EXCURSIONS AND CAMPS

Term 3 has started with a bang, with a number of students already being involved in a variety of camps and excursions.

Last Sunday a group of 10 students left for the Deadly Recruits camp. On Monday morning, another 10 students left for the Beyond Year 10 camp to Toowoomba, where they will spend the week learning about the training and study opportunities that exist for students after school, so that students have a more informed ability to set themselves goals as they continue past Year 10 towards their future life after school.

The Year 12s this week were involved in a program called “Think the Drink”, which is aimed at students making smart decisions about drinking and driving. The program focused also on the consequences of making bad decisions around these and the devastating lifelong effects one wrong decision can make. The program was held at the RSL, with a number of community support groups assisting to deliver the program on the day.

Coming up soon will be the Rewards program trip to Dreamworld, as well as the Year 11 camp to Maroon Dam. Charleville State High School prides itself in providing as many opportunities as possible for students to participate in and experience different things, and this is certainly continuing for many students this term.

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

NAIDOC week will be celebrated in Charleville from Saturday 22 July to Friday 28th July. The focus of the week is “Our Language Matters”. There will be many celebrations and activities occurring throughout the week, with many opportunities for students to be involved.

On Wednesday 26th July, there will be a special ceremony at Charleville State High School to unveil a new Mural painted at the school by acclaimed Indigenous artist, Mr Stanley Geebung. Mr Geebung spent a couple of weeks at the school, creating an amazing mural of “Mundagudda”, the Rainbow Serpent, which has enhanced the Indigenous “Bush Tucker” garden that had previously been developed at the front of the Trade Training Centre of the school.

Mr Geebung has also left a description of his interpretation of his painting which will be shared with the students and all our visitors on the day. The event will commence at 8.45am on Wednesday morning and all are welcome to attend.

All students will also be asked to be involved in the annual NAIDOC march on Friday 28th July, which will commence outside the Courthouse, and this year will conclude at St Mary’s School. Students will be given a letter with more information about the March as we get closer to the event.

DENTAL VAN

The Queensland Health Dental Van will be arriving at the school on August 8th. This van offers a FREE service to all students for many dental procedures (for all Year 7-10 students, and for all Year 11-12 students with a current Health Care Card).

Once they arrive, all students will have a form sent home so that parents can book a time for their student to have a check-up at the school. Students will then be given an appointment time at school for the check-up, with the Dental Van staff contacting parents if there is any further work suggested for the students. Please look to take advantage of this FREE Queensland Health Service.

Deadly Recruits Camp 2017

On Sunday 16th July, we had 9 young people travel to Tinnenburra Station for the week long Deadly Recruits Camp. Tinnenburra Station is about an hour and a half south of Cunnamulla and the students were driven down on the CASE Bus by Jenny Peacock, accompanied by Matt Huth and Amiee Dolman. The Bus rolled out of town on this foggy Sunday at 8:30am, to meet the rest of the campers at Cunnamulla State School. The camp is a collaboration between St. George, Cunnamulla and Charleville schools, the HOPE Project, Cunnamulla Council and reflects our community’s genuine desire to provide every opportunity to our young people.

Jolene Russell will be camping with our students for the week, which concludes on Friday 21st July. These students will spend a week camping at Tinnenburra and undertaking various army activities, such as using night vision, orienteering hikes and standing and marching military style. We can’t wait to see the photos and hear the stories from this amazing adventure.

Beyond Year 10 Camp

At 6:15am on Monday morning, eight Year 10 students, accompanied by Lauren Butler and Ange Vetter, headed off into the chilly morning on their way to Toowoomba for the week. They picked up another student at Morven and the 10th student arrived in Toowoomba on Wednesday. This dedicated group of young people are participating in the University of Southern Queensland Beyond Year 10 Camp, from Tuesday to Thursday. The camp is designed to open student’s minds to various different career pathways and spark their interest in further education after high school.

VET News

In 2018, the school will be offering a brand new certificate course to our Year 11 students. The Certificate III in Sport and Recreation is a comprehensive certificate that gains the student up to 12 QCE points, their First Aid qualification and a coach’s qualification in their chosen sport. While the course costs $260, most students will be able to access VETis funding to cover this amount. The course is being provided to the school by Binnacle Training, by training our own teachers to provide the course. Some of the skills the students will gain are:

  • Officiating games or competitions
  • Coaching beginner participants to develop fundamental skills
  • Communication and customer service in sport
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Facilitating groups
  • Using social media tools for participant engagement

WELCOME TO Term 3

Junior School

Timetable

Your student will have received a new timetable at the beginning of Term 3. There are minimal changes in times and subjects for Years 11 and 12 (except for a few teacher changes). However, Year 7 students have a new timetable structure to accommodate the new electives being offered of ITD and Art.

Who can support your student at CSHS?

There are many people who can help your student if they need it. Below is a list of some options should students not know who to see for help. Please note that there are a number of staff on leave.

Reading Program

We welcome back to our teaching staff, Mrs Angela Stirton who has been on family leave. Angela joins Miss Lauren Butler in delivering the LLI program at the school. We are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved. The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program, please don’t hesitate to contact Miss Lauren Butler or Mrs Stirton at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will be notified.

Student Services

Positive Parenting course

We are currently discussing the possibility of working with CWAATSICH in facilitating a Positive Parenting Group aimed at parents of High School parents in Term 3. More information will be given in the next few weeks.

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

A large number of students have mobile phones at school. I would like to emphasise that at no time from 8:40 am to 3:00pm does a student require to use a phone at school. If urgent phone calls are needed to be made, students are allowed to call from the office. There is no subject that requires the student to use their phone. In fact, phones are not allowed in classrooms. It has been brought to our attention from the Police that there is an increased amount of inappropriate use of data being used and received by young people in Charleville. I would like to bring to the attention of parents/carers of students under the age of sixteen that you are responsible for what is stored on their phone. As a responsible parent/carer you should be checking the phone for what is being received and what is being sent via their phone. Should your child receive inappropriate material via their phone, it should be reported to the police immediately.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Unless supervised, children including students of Charleville State High School are not allowed on the school grounds outside of school hours. Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours and are concerned that these children are not adequately supervised.

PBL Rewards Trip

Term 3, students who reach the criteria for positive behaviour will be offered a subsidised trip to a Theme Park. Criteria for students participating include, Starbucks cards, attendance and behaviour.

Immunization for Meningococcal (Year Ten students)

Forms have been be sent out to every year ten student. Please ensure the forms are returned to the school as soon as possible. The year tens will be immunized soon.

Hearing Screening

In Week 3, all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be screened for their hearing. Forms will be sent out this week with more information.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working towards the organizing of the Year 9 Camp to Moreton Island that takes place in Term 4. I grew up on Moreton Island and am sure that the students will have the most amazing experience.

Junior Secondary Update

Welcome back to Term 3! This term, like the previous term, is also jam packed. This term sees the last of our fundraising events for our Year 9 Camp to Moreton Island, with us already raising $6000. A massive thank you must go to Miss Goult who has been at the forefront of most of these fundraising events, and who has given up a number of her weekends and afternoons to make sure these events were possible. A big thank you must also go to all the parents, students and businesses who have contributed in a variety of ways throughout the year. Your support has helped to make this camp more accessible to our students – so thank you! Full payment for Year 9 Camp is due by Week 9, and a letter with further information will be distributed shortly.

This term also starts our transition for our Year 7 students for 2018. Our first information session for parents of students going into Year 7 for 2018 will be held on Tuesday August 1st at 5pm at the School Library. Enrolment packs will be available at this time, as will some introductory information for parents and students. Our first transition day for Year 6 students from Charleville State School, St Mary’s School, Augathella State School and Morven State School will also take place this term. Students will have a brief introduction into what life at Charleville State High School is like, experiencing a number of different subjects.

Charleville Mates for 2017

Over the last term, we have had twelve of our Year 11 students participate in the Charleville Mates Program. All students involved have had a ball, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experiences and friendships they have developed so far at both Charleville State School and St Marys School. Last term our students participated in literacy activities, numeracy activities, dance lessons, music lessons, and art lessons in the Year 6 class at both schools. It is wonderful to see our students caring and nurturing nature while assisting students in a number of different situations. Our students have been only too willing to take some time out to spend some quality time developing friendships with students during their playtime, building up the confidence of the junior students, and reminiscing on their previous schooling in primary school. It is an absolute pleasure to see first hand the maturity and growth these lovely students have displayed this term, and I cannot wait to see it continue in Term 3.

STUDENT SERVICES

Whole School Hearing Screening

In week 3, the junior school (Years 7-9) students will participate in hearing screening. This is an integral tool in identifying children with hearing loss who were not identified at birth, lost to follow-up, or who developed hearing loss later. Without such screening, students with unilateral, less severe or late onset hearing loss may not be identified or will be misdiagnosed and managed. The screening will help ensure that children with hearing loss, are identified and managed in a timely manner, including referrals to audiology specialist, and thereby minimize negative academic consequences. A letter has been sent home with further information. This is an opt-out visit for students within the junior school. Should you NOT wish your child to participate in this screening process, please contact Mrs Georgia Grant – gcold3@eq.edu.au to notify the school of your request. Furthermore, if you have a child in the senior school and would wish them to participate in the school screening process, please do not hesitate to contact the school and we will do our best to accommodate them in this process.

Year 9 Camp Fundraising Efforts a Success

Over the last few months students, parents and teachers of the Year 9 cohort have spent much of their spare time fundraising for their upcoming camp to Moreton Island. After running events such as a Zooper Dooper drive, cupcake drive, raffles at the Charleville Show, catering at Charleville Polocrosse, a scratchy tree raffle, and sausage sizzles outside of Supa IGA, we are proud to say we have raised just over $6000. This is an amazing fundraising effort, and we thank everyone who was involved and made this possible. In particular, Year 9 students would like to thank Heinemann’s Bakery, who generously donated bread for most of these events. We would also like to thank Supa IGA for their donations and for hosting our sausage sizzles, and the Charleville Chemist for hosting our scratchy tree raffle. A huge thank you to all the parents who donated food, scratchies, and their precious time. Lastly, we need to thank the Charleville High School P&C, who not only helped run these events, but also made a financial contribution. The camp will take place in Term 4, with students heading off on Monday 9th October, 2017.

Relationship Words

Think for a moment about the characteristics of a good relationship. Most people will include words like love, trust, consideration, tolerance, respect, sensitivity, forgiveness and communication. These are important ideals for most of us but they are not measurable or even observable. For example we can see people talking but we are unable to see how well they are communicating. We are unable to tell how well they express their emotions in words or understand each other. Similarly we can see people demonstrate respectful behaviours but we are observing behaviours – not respect. It is even possible to demonstrate respectful behaviours demanded by a situation when we actually have little respect for the person. In addition, we may think that our behaviour towards someone is respectful but because of cultural or language differences that person may not see our behaviour as respectful. The behaviour itself has not changed.

In defining the attributes of close relationships, it helps to think in terms of observable behaviours or events rather than abstract words. Next time you are talking about what has happened and what you want to change, use specific descriptions of behaviours. Instead of asking someone to be more considerate or helpful in the kitchen ask them to wipe up the dishes, put them away and wipe down the sink.

Bullying is another example of an abstract word that cannot be clearly defined by a specific behaviour. It is also a very emotional topic and when children come home and say they have been bullied, they can use our emotional reaction to get us involved in their peer disputes. If your child comes home and says they are being bullied, suggest that instead of using the word ‘bullying’, they say exactly what was said or done so that you can assess the situation in a balanced way and advise them how to handle each of those incidents.

HPE Update

Term 3 continues to be a very busy term for the HPE department, with students involved in South West sports continuing with their relevant sporting teams. We also have a number of different sporting opportunities occurring for our students this term in basketball, touch, and rugby league. Watch this space for more information as it comes about. These events continue to build on last terms volleyball and netball tours. What an amazing staff we have at Charleville State High School.

This term is also our annual Athletics Carnival. This will occur the Friday of Week 4, with the theme being “childhood memories.” I look forward to seeing as many students as possible representing their house, and putting in 100%. Remember if you try your best, there is no failure.

House Point Update

Congratulations to Kokoda, who are our Term 2 House winners. This term was close in house points, with the leader changing a number of times. Let’s hope we can keep the competition going this term too.

This term we have two house lunch time competitions occurring – a Talent Quest, and a Chess Competition, along with our last major sporting carnival – Athletics Day. It would be great to see as many students participating in these events. We may possibly even have an AFL competition running in line with R U OK Day. Every student has the opportunity to earn points for their house, and remember every point counts!

At Charleville State High School, we want to reward and recognise all the wonderful things and achievements our students make. Please ensure that your student see’s either their house mentor or Mrs Goodingham with evidence to secure their points. Evidence can include a photo, a letter, a certificate, or even a ribbon. If in doubt about whether what you have done has earned points please see Mrs Goodingham to discuss the possibility

Positive Behaviour for learning

Rewards Trip

At the end of Week 3, 40 students from our school will be heading off to Dreamworld for our semester rewards trip. These 40 students are the students who have throughout the first half of this year collected the most Starbucks in their grades while also meeting attendance requirements. These will journey off Thursday morning the 27th to Toowoomba, where the students will watch our Girls rugby league team play, stay in Toowoomba the night then go to Dreamworld for a fun filled day on the Friday. This rewards trip is part of our PBL program where by students display the schools 4 Be’s and 4 V’s to earn Starbucks. As well as this reward, students can earn certificates that have a voucher for the tuckshop or local business. This year these Starbucks also earn point towards your house and may affect who wins the house trophy at the end of the year.

Each week the students have a focus to work on, this week’s focus is ‘be in your timetables location’. For safety reasons we need to know of student’s location at all times. Often in school hours’ students can be working with staff that they are not timetabled to be with, students need to remember to let their teacher know and the office.

Remember your student is here to learn and to do that they need to be in their class’s.

It isn’t always about the content that is taught but the skills that are refined.

Master Teacher

My name is Brooke Andrews and I will be taking on the role of Master Teacher at Charleville State High School on Thursdays and Fridays this semester, as well as working at Charleville State School and Charleville Schools of Distance Education. Prior to taking this position, I worked at Charleville State School and Maleny State School as a classroom teacher. In my role as Master Teacher, I will be coaching and supporting beginning teachers to develop teacher capability and improve student outcomes. I look forward to working with the High School staff and students for the rest of the year.
