Principal Report

Welcome to our final newsletter for Term 3. This means that we are rapidly approaching the conclusion of the 2025 academic school year, which comes with many opportunities to celebrate student learning and student improvements.
For those students in Years 7-9, they have a total of 44 days of learning remaining. For those in year 10 & 11, 39 days and those in year 12, 34 days. We are eager to ensure that every day is a day of learning at Charleville SHS where we are supporting your children to enhance their learning. Please support us by ensuring your child prioritises attendance.
Student Leadership
Participating in the student leadership process, is one of the highlights of my role. As we begin the process of reading student applications, listening to leadership speeches and interviewing candidates, I am constantly blown away by the passion our students have for their school and their ideas to ways to improve.
I look forward to announcing our 2026 leaders at our end of year award ceremony.
RU OK? Day
Thursday 11th September, we took time to recognise RU OK? Day. The day is designed to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life.

Parentline
Being a parent is rewarding—but it can also be challenging. Whether you’re trying to support your child with school issues, friendship challenges, behaviour, or tough moments at home, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what to do next.
Parentline is a free, confidential service for parents and carers across Queensland.
Parentline support is available 7 days a week, from 6am until midnight via:
- Phone: 1300 301 300
- Webchat: Accessible via the Parentline website
- Online forums facilitated by counsellors
Parentline offers advice and support on a wide range of parenting topics, including:
- bullying and friendship issues
- parent–child relationships
- parenting strategies and behaviour management
- mental and emotional wellbeing—for both children and parents
An online bullying support forum is also available. This is a safe, moderated space to connect with others, ask questions, and share experiences.
Kind regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo

Summer Uniform Reminder
During the last week, I found some photos on our school’s internal network from a parade in 2015 when the Melbourne Cup was presented to our students. What was immediately noticeable was that every student was in the school uniform. The polo shirts, that have not changed in that time, were worn by every single student. Jumpers and jackets were the school issue, proudly displaying the school logo.
As the weather warms up and the end of term approaches like a hopping elephant, it is important to reinforce the expectation that every student is to come to school in full school uniform every day.

We believe that wearing our uniform fosters a sense of pride, belonging, and consistency within our school community.
For families that cannot provide black shorts, pants or trackpants, the following support is available:
- Prior to the commencement of the school day any student out of uniform is required to report to the office to collect a uniform pass. If the student has a note from the parent/caregiver, the office may excuse a temporary inability to comply with the Student Dress Code.
- We maintain a small bank of uniform items for students who present without the full uniform, so the student can change into the uniform supplied by the school for the day and return in the afternoon to collect their items of clothing.
- Families experiencing financial hardship should make an appointment to meet with the principal to discuss options.
- If there are circumstances that prevent your young person from wearing the full school uniform, please request approval from the relevant Deputy Principal.
2026 Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Events and Activities
Key Transition Events | Week/Day | Responsible Officer |
Student Info Session Charleville State School | Tuesday, 16th September | Junior Secondary Deputy Principal |
Student Info Session St Mary's | Wednesday, 17th September | Junior Secondary Deputy Principal |
Student Info Session Augathella State School | T4, week 2, Monday, 13th October. | Junior Secondary Deputy Principal |
Full Transition Day 1 | T4, week 2, Thurs 16th October | Junior Secondary Deputy Principal |
Full Transition Day 2 | T4, week 5, Thurs 5th November | Junior Secondary Deputy Principal |
The Year 6 into Year 7 transition is informed by four distinct focuses:
- Student focus: to ensure a supported and confident start to secondary schooling
- Teacher focus: that teachers have the necessary information to plan for an effective start to secondary schooling
- Parent focus: that your young person’s transition to secondary school is collaborative, planned and supportive, informed by https://education.qld.gov.au/initiativesstrategies/Documents/preparing-child-high-school.pdf
- Community focus: that Charleville State High School intentionally partners with feeder primary schools to gather academic and wellbeing information to support transitions to secondary schooling.
Charleville State High School plans for and implements reasonable adjustments for students with disability as part of every student’s enrolment in school, the transition to Charleville SHS and throughout their secondary schooling. Parent and student input is highly valuable, along with the input provided by the primary school and other specialists working with students and families. Parents/carers will be supported through this transition phase. Charleville SHS offers this support in a range of ways, including workshops and involvement in transition activities that are outlined in the year 6 into year 7 structured transition program.

Senior School
Welcome to the end of Term 3. It’s been a full and productive term for our senior students—with presentations, guest workshops, subject selections and planning the next steps beyond school. A big thank-you to everyone who continues to model our expectations and give their best effort in and out of the classroom. Your consistency builds positive habits that set you up for success in Term 4 and beyond.
Year 10
Our SET Plan meetings are underway to ensure each student selects subjects that align with their strengths, interests and post-school goals. These conversations help reduce subject changes later and support a smooth pathway to QCE attainment.
Next term we’ll finalise the Careers Education Short Course—this begins your child’s QCE points collection. Please encourage them to complete both assessments so they can be awarded the credit.
A special thank-you to the many students who consistently do the right thing, every lesson. For those still finding their feet, a reminder: we expect students to be safe, responsible and respectful learners—on time, prepared, and focused. The habits we practise now (punctuality, teamwork, communication, initiative) are the same traits employers value. Let’s build on the positive momentum from Term 2 and finish the year strong.
Year 11
We’re nearing the end of the formative year of senior schooling. Students are completing Unit 2 and preparing for their final assessments. Where subjects include exams, there will be a mini exam block. Now is the time to lock in effective study routines—plan revision, make summary notes, complete practice questions and seek feedback.
Looking ahead, we’ll begin the Senior Jersey process next term (design ideas, names and sizing). All students will have a voice in the design, with orders placed early in Term 1, 2026 to maximise wear during the cooler months. Cost details will be shared late next term/early next year.
Finally, good luck to all students applying for 2026 leadership roles. Whether or not you’re nominating remember: leadership is a behaviour—be a positive role model for your peers every day.
Year 12
We’ve entered the final weeks of Year 12. Students are wrapping up internal assessments, preparing for external exams (where applicable) and finalising certificates. Daily attendance—start to finish—matters for maintaining learning routines, seeking last-minute feedback and supporting peers. We are also preparing for the Senior Formal and Graduation celebrations that mark this milestone.
As pressure rises, it’s vital we remain calm, kind and respectful. What helps:
- keep a simple study plan and stick to it
- prioritise sleep, nutrition and movement
- ask for help early—from teachers, Heads of Department, Guidance and peers
- use respectful language in person and online, especially when stressed
- take short breaks and practise positive self-talk
Finishing well is about more than grades—it’s about the mature, respectful young adults you are becoming.

Senior Year Level Coordinator
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Later this week we’ll hold our Rewards Trip & Workshops (Week 10). Students have ranked their preferences and will be placed accordingly. To attend off-site options, students must meet attendance expectations, follow the uniform policy and consistently demonstrate positive behaviour.
Important notes for specific workshops (due Wednesday 17 September):
- Fishing: Students bring their own rod and tackle (bait provided). Equipment must be checked into the office on arrival and collected before departure.
- Welding: Correct PPE is required, including steel-capped boots (loan pairs available at school). All other PPE will be supplied.
Throughout all activities, students are expected to be safe, responsible and respectful.
Term focus: “We are Respectful – We will speak respectfully to everyone, every lesson, every day.”

This applies in class, in the playground, online and in the community. Respect looks like: greeting others, listening without interrupting, following instructions the first time, disagreeing politely, using a calm tone, and repairing relationships when mistakes happen. These are lifelong skills that strengthen learning and prepare students for work and life. Families can help by asking, “How did you show respect today?” and praising specific examples at home.

PBL Coordinator
PPP – Senior School
PPP continues next term with a strong real-world focus. Regular attendance is essential to keep up with learning and certificate requirements.
Year 10: We’ll complete the Careers Education Short Course - clarifying career interests and matching senior subjects to pathways. This builds QCE points and helps students develop the habit of working steadily on certificate tasks. We’ll also revisit respectful relationships and the expectations for Years 11–12.
Years 11 & 12: Students continue the Certificate in Financial Services, building practical skills in budgeting, saving, credit, debt, consumer rights and avoiding scams—high-value knowledge for life after school (and QCE points). Year 11 will also use PPP to start planning fundraising, formal and jerseys for next year. Year 12 will finalise formal and graduation details and complete certificate components.
Early next term we’ll share an overview of key PPP topics via the newsletter and school Facebook page—watch this space.
Emergency Services RAAP Presentation
Our senior students took part in the RAAP (Road Attitudes and Action Planning) program, with presentations from Police, Ambulance and Fire Services. Sessions covered the Fatal Five—speeding, drink/drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction—and the real-world consequences of unsafe choices.
Students asked thoughtful questions, practised a breathalyser test and discussed how to speak up when something isn’t right. Thank you to our emergency services and to our students for their respectful participation and strong engagement.
Author in Residence
In Week 7, author Dee White worked with our Year 7 and Year 11–12 students on character creation and the writing process. Students experienced how ideas develop from a spark into a story through drafting, feedback and refinement. Engagement was fantastic—many students have continued writing in their own time. Thank you, Dee, and well done to our budding authors for living our school values and leaning into the challenge.

Senior’s Careers Tour 2025
After months of planning and preparation, a group of year 11’s & 12’s embarked on a Senior’s Careers Tour in July this year. 23 Charleville State High School Students and 3 Cunnamulla State School students were transported by coach to Roma, Toowoomba and Gatton for a 5 day educational careers tour.
The itinerary included Industry visits in both Roma and Toowoomba, including Wild Desert Oil & Gas, SWHHS Roma Hospital; Qantas Pilot Academy; SWARM Farm Robotics; RDO; and The Empire Theatre. The tour also included the Toowoomba Careers Expo and visits and tours to TAFE Toowoomba, UniSQ and UG Gatton Campuses.
Students were exposed to a full variety of career information and experiences. Some fun and chill out experiences were also included such as Mini Golf, Ten Pin Bowling and late-night shopping at Grand Central Shopping Centre.
The Tour was a success and something that has not been undertaken for many years. RESQ contributed a generous amount of funding for the tour which enabled the hiring of a comfortable coach, accommodation and meals. SQRH also provided funding along with the HOPE program. Without these contributions the tour would have been too expensive for most families and brought the cost down significantly. A huge thank you to Jennifer Peacock HOPE program and Shamus Garmany (Regional School Industry Partnership Program) for help with planning and organising this tour.
It is our hope to organise a tour such as this every second year for senior students.
Angie Walton
Industry Liaison Officer

Teacher Aide Appreciation
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful Teacher Aides for the incredible support they provide to our students each and every day. Their dedication, care, and hard work make a lasting impact in our classrooms and across the school.

R U OK Day
Thursday 11 September was R U OK? Day, where we as a school and community come together and recognise the importance of meaningful conversation and checking in with each other.
However, we know that we all go through life’s up and downs every day – and we want to encourage these conversations and connections not just on R U OK? Day, but Any Day.

We recognised R U OK? Day with splashes of yellow and meaningful conversations all throughout our school - yummy pancakes, wristbands, wellbeing challenges and prizes for students, and wellbeing hampers delivered to each staff room.
Thanks so much everyone for getting involved! Remember - Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.

NAIDOC winners
Beyond the Broncos Student Support Officer Di-Erin Williams ran a Scavenger Hunt as part of the 2025 NAIDOC Celebrations held at Charleville State High.
Winners were Isabella, Sienna, Mr Razbeau and Chelsie.
Congratulations to you all.

Bullying No Way Pledge Wall
Earlier this term we recognised Bullying No Way Week and highlighted the role that we all must play in being bold, being kind, and speaking up against bullying behaviours in our school and community.
As part of this ongoing commitment, stakeholders from Lifeline Darling Downs, the Murweh Shire Council and Qld Health joined with CSHS staff and students in creating a pledge wall, which is proudly displayed in C Block, where it will remain for the remainder of the year.
A heartfelt thanks to our local councillors, executives, and staff from Murweh Shire Council, and the whole Lifeline team (with a special shout out to Sam and Ainsley! 😊). Thanks also to Mel Doolan (SBYHN) and Katie McLeod (Youth Support Coordinator) for supporting this initiative and encouraging us to work together and say - bullying, no way!
It’s not too late to join us – please contact the Office and complete your pledge to show your support.

- No passengers/doubling – only one person riding an e-scooter
- Speed limit of 12km/h on footpaths and shared paths

StreetSmartsQld features educational videos and other helpful safety tips for riding e-scooters and e-skateboards.
Bush Kids Rowing Program – Invitation
Bush Kids Rowing Program: www.outbackrowing.com.au. Look for Bush Kids Registrations.
We encourage bush kids to take part in learning this wonderful life skill. Rowing has applications well beyond the sport itself — it helps develop teamwork, control over personal risk-taking, physical fitness, coordination, and an established skill set in rowing so they are not limited to the more common sports of netball or cricket.
Warm regards,
Toby Ford

Asthma – Flip the Script
It’s time we Attack Asthma before the symptoms start!
Asthma is one of the leading causes of children ending up in hospital. New research by Asthma Australia shows that while most parents feel like they are confident in managing their child’s asthma, nearly two thirds live in constant fear of an asthma attack.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
A daily preventer can help keep your child's asthma under control, reducing the chance of an attack.
This means less time feeling sick or in the hospital and more time for them to just be a kid. Instead of
waiting for symptoms like wheezing or difficulty breathing, use a preventer every day to help your child breathe normally.
Learn more about how to Attack Asthma here: www.asthma.org.au/attack
