Principal Report

A huge thank you to the following volunteers who have put their hand up to lead our P&C. Quite fittingly on the 19th of May it is P&C Day where we celebrate our P&C volunteer superstars for their support and the hard work that they do in school communities. We recognise our P&C members who offer invaluable help improving educational facilities, resources and student outcomes.

I ask that our parent body support the P&C/School moving forward by attending the meetings and collaboratively working towards Equity and Excellence for all our students.

President: Kelly Shearwin
Vice President: Tegan Russell
Secretary: Julie Frousheger
Treasurer: Lana Holley

Our school has the majority of students being safe, respectful, responsible learners every day supported by great staff and families. Our school is like most schools, a reflection of the community where they are situated. Charleville and the wider communities of Morven, Wyandra and Augathella are great communities filled with great families. Unfortunately, when we label schools, communities or organisations negatively on the actions of some, we do not respect the great people/children who are always doing the right things within them.

Schools, like communities, will have some who make poor, unacceptable choices. This is not a reflection on the whole, but the individuals involved. I want to acknowledge the great students, staff and families in our school and the great people in our communities. By recognising our great students, and not labelling the whole on the actions of some, is where we can make the greatest difference moving forward.

White Card Course

This term I have organised a White Card Course (Construction Induction Course) at school for students wanting to work or do work experience in the trade and construction industries. Many businesses and government organisations require students to have white cards prior to starting work experience now. I decided to run a course at school for interested students using INSCOPE Training as an online course. There is still a cost for the course but it has given students the opportunity to do the course in a group setting with assistance if required.

After gauging expressions of interest, I have ended up with 22 students signed up to do the course which I have split into two groups over 2 dates. The first one is happening this Wednesday the 17th May. The second will be Wednesday the 24th May.

Once students have a white card, they have it for life and will allow them to work on trade and construction sites anywhere in Australia.

Year 10 Work Experience

At the end of this term, we have our year 10 work experience program running from the 19th -23rd June. I have been talking to year 10’s weekly about the benefits and opportunities of doing work experience week. I have offered help to students to prepare resumes and cover letters to take to work places of their choice to participate in work experience and helping those who are undecided to get some ideas. This opportunity gives students the chance to try a work place they may be interested in to get some insight into the job/industry and help them make decisions about their future career pathways.

Last year’s work experience program was very successful and I’m hoping this year will be the same.

Painting of the Football Boots

Charleville State High School student Summer Simpson, Year 10, was a successful applicant in the “Painting of the Football Boots” for the Brisbane Broncos.

Our Beyond Broncos SSO Deb Bateman is very proud of Summer and the effort she has put in painting the boots. They will be worn by our very own Kurt Capewell in the Indigenous Round 2023.

Murweh Youth Council Meeting

The first Murweh Youth Council meeting for 2023 was held at the Town Hall on Thursday 11th May. Students from Charleville State School and Charleville State High School met with meeting organiser Jenny Peacock from the HOPE Program, Mayor Shaun Radnedge, and representatives from Qld Police, Qld Health, RESQ, Lifeline, the Charleville Neighbourhood Centre. It was wonderful to see so many Charleville SHS students in attendance, representing our school and their peers with pride and keen interest.

At this term’s meeting students received updates about issues raised at previous meetings and current Council projects, as well as information about upcoming community events and ideas relevant to the young people of our community. Students were actively involved in some excellent discussions about how to get young people more involved in events and particular sports, and came up with some great questions, ideas and actions moving forward.

Thank you very much to Jenny Peacock, Mayor Radnedge, and all involved agencies for your support of the Murweh Youth Council. We look forward to our next meeting in Term 3!
