Principal Report

Anzac Day

I would like to congratulate our school captains who led one of the best school Anzac ceremonies I have witnessed in my career. The learning delivered to a very respectful audience of students was very fitting and one to be very proud of. Thank you also to the many community members and parents who attended this important formal occasion. It was also an honour for our students and staff to be able participate in the community ceremonies.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

I encourage all parents/carers to book a time to meet and discuss your child’s academic progress either at our upcoming Parent/Teacher interviews or if not available on the day and time outside this. Discussing your child’s progress and how the school and home can work together is vital to supporting your child to attain their best at school. Schooling is a journey with many twists and turns as students grow socially and academically. Together is how we achieve the best for all.

P&C

I recently sent an email to all families with the below details for our next meeting to ensure we have a P&C moving forward. This group of volunteers is an important part of our school improvement process and I encourage all to attend the next meeting to place your vote and support the elected team.

When: Wednesday 9th of May
Time: 5.30pm
Where: High School Administration Building

Senior Deputy News

Welcome back to term 2! I hope all students have had a relaxing and restful break and have returned eager for what term 2 has to offer!

Student drivers

Senior students with a valid driver’s licence and who intend on driving to school must have completed (and returned) a Student Driver Form to the school office. If you are requiring this form, please see the office to obtain one.

As it is the beginning of a new term, student drivers and their parent/carers are reminded of the following as a condition of their driving to and from school (and as stated and signed to in the Student Driver Form):

  • Students are to park on Parry Street to ensure safety for all students
  • No student is to travel to or from school with a student driver without a note (attached to the returned Student Driver Form) giving permission from the parent/carer
  • Student drivers who use their vehicles to leave the school at unauthorised times will be asked to leave their vehicles at home (students are to drive to and from school only – they do not have permission to leave at any point during the school day to purchase lunch etc.).
  • Under no circumstances can a student transport themselves or other students in their cars in school hours unless explicit approval is given by the Principal.

We appreciate your support with this, with communication being made with parents/carers if students are not following these conditions out of the safety for all. If your student has returned their Student Driver Form earlier this year and their circumstances have changed (for example, you require them to transport a sibling etc.), you will be required to update these details. Students are to see the ladies at administration for a form to update their driver details.

Adulting Life Pastoral Program and Folders (years 11 & 12)

Last week during Pastoral Care, our year 11 and 12 students were presented with their The Adulting Life folders by the founder, Donna Fitzgerald! These folders were so generously funded for our students by Jen Peacock and the team at South West Hospital and Health Service's HOPE Program!

At Charleville State High School, we incorporate The Adulting Life folders into our senior pastoral care program where we work with community members and organisations to deliver meaningful sessions to our students centred around all aspects of 'adulting' they may face on completion of high school. Throughout years 11 and 12, students will add information to their Adulting Life folders obtained from our guest speakers and are presenting with their complete folders at graduation.

Thank you to Donna, Jen and the HOPE Program team for your continual support of our senior students!

Senior student meetings

If you have a student in years 11 or 12 and would like to meet with me to discuss their current progress towards QCE or ATAR, I encourage you to make an appointment with me during parent/teacher interviews next Wednesday 3 May 2023. If you cannot make this time, I am happy to meet with you and your student at an alternative time – please phone the school to make an appointment.

Wishing you all a great next couple of weeks and look forward to meeting and discussing senior student progress over the term.

School Based Apprenticeship

Last year, Tahlia came to see me expressing interest in wanting to be an Auto Electrician and wanted to gain some work experience. With limited options I tried both Auto Electricians in town and Craige Perriman of Perriman’s Auto Electrical gave Tahlia the opportunity to try it out.

Checking in after several weeks, Craig said he was happy with Tahlia’s work ethic and eagerness to learn. At the end of last term, after doing work experience one day per week over several months, Craige offered Tahlia a school-based apprenticeship. MEGT (Apprenticeship Provider) travelled out to do the sign up on the 23rd of March. Tahlia will complete Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology whilst completing Senior School at Charleville State High School.

This is a fantastic outcome for Tahlia and shows that if you are keen, and have great work ethic with a willingness to learn and listen, that opportunities can arise.

Careers Expo 2023

Last term on the 28th March the annual Careers Expo was held at the Charleville Racecourse. The Expo was bigger and better again this year. A collaboration between RESQ, HOPE and Charleville State Highschool ensures students experienced a wide variety of information on Careers and Career Pathways. This year approximately 250 students (years 7 to 12) from Charleville State High School, Cunnamulla State School and Quilpie State College attended the Expo. There was over 47 Exhibitors including indoor and outdoor exhibits. We had 12 Guest Speakers running presentations over the course of the day as well as a series of Trade Videos running continually showcasing 9 local Trades people and their career journeys.

The Expo was a big success and the committee will continue to grow it to make it bigger each year. A huge thank you to the Careers Expo Working Group - Sue Bylett & Trent Oldman (RESQ); Jen Peacock (HOPE) and Angie Walton (CSHS) for all the work this year to make the Expo a success. Thanks also to the sponsors of the Careers Expo – Dunne’s Butchery & Heinemann’s Bakery.

Each year students are given questionnaire cards to ask particular exhibitors questions about their organisation. These are then put into a box before students leave for the chance to win some prizes.

Winners for this year are:

Prize 1 – Laptop Winner - Bo Gattera
Prize 2 – Gift Basket – Macie Goodman
Prize 3 - $50 Mastercard – Ngoc Chu
Prize 4 - $50 Mastercard - Jeylen Francisco

Thank you to the Sponsors for the Prizes RESQ and Paroo Shire Council
