Principal News

It is hard to believe that this is the final newsletter for 2022. Another year has passed by with a large proportion of our students achieving great things for themselves personally, and on behalf the wider school community. This was no better highlighted than at the Year 12 Formal and Graduation Ceremonies that were held last week. For our younger students, the graduation ceremony provides a light at the end of the tunnel, where they can see that with hard work and commitment, they too can put themselves in positions to complete their years of schooling successfully, and with a clear path mapped out before them.

Congratulations to the class of 2022. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to share in your formal and graduation ceremonies this year. Looking at the presentations during these events it became clear the transformation that occurred in you all, from your first days in year 7 through to your final moments of year 12. I sincerely hope that, when your final results are released later this year, you take time to celebrate your achievements and use them to draw strength from in future, realising that you have all overcome obstacles at times and achieved success. I wish you all the best of success and happiness for your futures, no matter what it holds for you.

Reports will be issued to students in years 7-11 in the last week of term. Students are still finalising assessment and teachers are busy marking. I encourage parents to take the opportunity to talk through reports with you child, finding ways to celebrate success, whether that be in academic, effort or behaviour results, and talk through areas that could be improved heading into next year. Should you have any questions in regard to your child’s report, please contact the relevant teacher.

Booklists and other important school documents will be sent out to families prior to the conclusion of the year. Please check your emails to ensure you have the most up to date information. If you are unsure about any information provided to you please contact the school office.

This week senior students who have demonstrated the required school wide behaviour will have the opportunity to go to the Cosmos Centre for their rewards day. Junior students will be heading to the pool in week 9. Congratulations to these students for demonstrating the appropriate school wide behaviours and values.

Our year 7 students are off on camp this week to Fairbairn Dam near Emerald. I wish you all a successful camp and I am sure that you will make the most of the opportunities to further develop friendships as well as build key skills in teamwork and resilience. I look forward to hearing your stories of camp when you return.

The Charleville SHS Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) ceremony will be held soon. Congratulations to all students who have met the requirements for this certificate of recognition. The aim of the JCE is to assist students in preparing for life in the senior secondary phase of learning, where successful completion of schooling is recognised through the receiving of either the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or the Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA).

I encourage all of our students to finish of the year strongly. By that I mean through continuing to display your best behaviour, attendance, effort and application to wearing the full school uniform. The last few weeks of school have opportunities to celebrate the year that has been, and I encourage everyone to put themselves in situations where they, and others, are able to do this.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff at Charleville SHS for your flexibility, commitment and hard work this year. A significant portion of your work goes unnoticed, out of the spotlight and in your own time. Your efforts this year have been truly appreciated. Thank you.

School resumes on Monday 23 January, 2023 after what I hope will be a relaxing and safe holiday period for everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during my time here as acting Principal this semester. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Charleville and will take away from it many great memories and experiences. I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours and please, take care and have a very safe and well-deserved holiday break.

Final week for year 12 students

This past week has been all about the year 12s with their final week, formal and graduation all turning out to be a major success! We congratulate our class of 2022 and wish each and every one of them a safe and well-deserved break before jumping straight into life post-secondary schooling whether that be university studies, completing a trade or working.

Preparing year 11 students for 2023 – subjects

This week, I will be contacting some of our year 11 students and their families to arrange meetings centred around QCE progress and final adjustments that may be needed to student learning pathway prior to year 12 in 2023. I look forward to discussing senior pathways again with you and your student so they can start 2023 successfully. If you would like to meet with me regarding their pathway, please contact me via email at sxand9@eq.edu.au

Preparing year 10 students for senior studies

Our year 10 students are well and truly into their special edition timetable where they trial their chosen senior subjects as selected during SETP earlier this year. Students who wish to make any final amendments to the classes they have selected for senior are to make an appointment to see me this week (prior to the holidays). To facilitate any subject changes, I will make contact with parents to seek approval and/or to arrange a meeting to amend SETP subject selections.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy, wonderful and safe holiday and look forward to working and seeing you all again in 2023.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

JUNIOR NEWS

As we move very quickly towards the end of the school year, the major focus of every student should be working to the best of their ability in order to achieve well in all of their curriculum subjects. With assessment cycle now in full swing, students (and their parents/carers) need to plan their time carefully to ensure last minute panic is avoided as much as possible.

STUDENT TIPS FOR END OF YEAR SURVIVAL

  1. Get plenty of sleep (at least 8 hours a night whenever possible);
  2. Have a healthy breakfast to fuel your brain for learning;
  3. Eat a nutritious lunch (low in added sugar/caffeine);
  4. Drink plenty of water (not soft drink/energy drink/flavoured milk);
  5. Use your assessment planners to prioritise your assessment tasks;
  6. Seek help from your teachers before school, during breaks or after school (remember Thursday afternoon Homework Club);
  7. Make sure that you take notice of feedback given on your drafts or during class activities;
  8. Hand your assessment tasks in on time and be at school for any exams;
  9. Speak to your Year Level Coordinator, the Guidance Officer, Youth Support Coordinator or Chaplain if you need extra support.

YEAR 7 CAMP

This week, thirty year 7 students are attending their year level camp, which was postponed earlier in the year due to Covid-19. I know that the students who are attending camp are having a fabulous time, and I sincerely thank the three intrepid staff members – Ms Dwyer, Mr Razbeau and Mr Scheimer - who are sharing this experience with the students. An alternative program is in operation at the school for those students who are not attending camp.

2022 FINAL WEEK PLAN FOR STUDENTS

During week 9 of the term, students in years 7, 8 and 9 will be participating in an alternative program. As all assessment task due dates will have passed, there will be no curriculum related lessons operating during this week. However, students who have outstanding assessment tasks will need to complete these during this time in order to meet requirements for their 2023 classes. Students who have met all curriculum requirements will be supervised to participate in a variety of cultural, artistic, sporting and organisational activities, including a PBL rewards trip to the local pool (for those students with sufficient Starbucks points). As always, students are required to be in appropriate school uniform whilst at school, including fully closed in shoes. They will also be expected to be sun safe (hats and sunscreen) and to behave appropriately at all times.

YEAR 9 JCE CEREMONY

The 2022 JCE ceremony will be held on Wednesday 30 November, in the Charleville SHS hall. The ceremony will commence at 9am. All students in years 7, 8 and 9 will attend the ceremony. Parents of all year 9 students are invited to attend this important event.

SOME IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Students continue to be reminded of the following:

  • Fully closed in shoes must be worn at all times at school. Students who are wearing inappropriate footwear (thongs/slides/socks/etc) will be required to sit in the office during all break times, and they will not be permitted to participate in practical classes, such as science experiments/sports/ cooking/woodwork/metalwork. These students will be given alternative theory work, which may need to be completed in the office if it is unsafe to do so in the classroom. Students who refuse to complete this alternative work will be required to complete it during lunch breaks with their teacher.
  • Wearing of appropriate school uniform is expected all day, every day. Students who are not able to comply with this requirement need to obtain a Uniform Slip from the office before school. Unless a parental note or phone call is received to explain the reason for the uniform violation, students will be required to attend lunchtime detentions, monitored by the relevant Year Level Coordinator.
  • Soft drinks and energy drinks, such as Mother/Red Bull/V/etc are BANNED at the school. These beverages are NOT for sale through the school canteen, but students are purchasing them at other venues and bringing them onto school grounds. Students who choose to bring these to school will be instructed to hand them in to the office (collection to occur after 3pm). Please note: the drinks will not be stored in the refrigerator.
  • Mobile phones are banned at school for students in years 7, 8 and 9. Students are reminded that they must hand their mobiles in to the office upon arrival at school. If students are seen using their phones during school time, they will be required to take their device to the office, where it can be collected by parents after 3pm.
  • Swearing and threatening others, including teachers, is not acceptable. Students who threaten others or use inappropriate language can anticipate consequences for this behaviour, including possible suspension from school.
  • The most important reason for students to be at school is to be in class, participating and learning. Students who choose to avoid classes, or whose poor behaviour means that they can no longer be in the room, still need to gain new knowledge and develop new skills. For this reason, students who truant or who are exited from class will be expected to complete their class work during break times under supervision of their classroom teacher.

Yearly Wrap up

It has been a big year in the ILO position for me, starting the job in February this year. I hit the ground running with the Careers Expo in March, which was attended by Charleville State High School, Cunnamulla State High School, Tambo and Quilpie Schools, with many local and visiting exhibitors. We are currently in the planning stages for next year’s Expo which will be bigger and better again.

Term 2 was all about organising the Year 10 work experience program. 25 Year 10 students were successfully placed at mostly local businesses and workplaces with a couple being at other locations such as Toowoomba. 8 other students chose to participate in either Shearing Camp or Deadly recruits camp. Overall it was very successful and profiles were completed and given to each student who participated in Work Experience this year. It is a valuable program that gives students a taste of a workplace they may be interested in, for a future career.

I have organised ongoing work experience for 16 students this year to give a longer-term work experience opportunity for students wishing to pursue a traineeship or apprenticeship. A huge thankyou to local businesses for hosting students for work experience, it is greatly appreciated.

Our 2022 Work Experience Students in their Workplaces

Next year we will be looking to enhance the Careers program at the school with new ideas and initiatives in the pipeline for students looking at VET pathways. I encourage students and parents to come and talk to me about career options and opportunities for our high school students. As the year wraps up I’m looking forward to new challenges next year in this role.
