Principal’s Note

Welcome to the week 8 newsletter. Another fortnight has gone by as we move closer to the end of term 3. Week 8 is usually a week that sees a range of assessment items fall due. I encourage all students to be prepared for their assessment tasks and to put in the work required to give themselves the best opportunity for success. I especially would like to encourage our year 12 students to keep working hard in every class. Hard work now can avoid leaving school at the end of the year with regrets or wondering what my results would have been if only I had worked harder. Please remember students that your teachers are there help and to seek assistance if required.

The last two weeks saw students involved in a range of activities, some of which are outlined below:

  • Congratulations to all students involved in the Charleville Arts Festival and especially to the students in the string ensemble and the rock band who received gold in their divisions. A special mention to Mr Mulhall for your work with these groups.
  • A number of students attended a presentation by tennis legend Evonne Goolagong Cawley in Cunnamulla who spoke about her career.
  • The girls involved in the Beyond the Broncos program enjoyed taking part in team building and cultural activities delivered by the Beyond the Broncos team including Justin Hodges and Alex Glenn.
  • Students from year 6 attended the first of two transition days held at Charleville SHS where they began to make connections with the school in preparation for their enrolment into year 7 next year.
  • Students from year 7-12 participated in a road safety presentation delivered by the Queensland Police Service.
  • Students in year 7 attended the Author in Residence workshop run by author Karen Tyrrell during which they wrote an adventure story.

On the 15th August, Charleville State High School officially ‘adopted’ Senior Constable Laurie Bateman as our Adopt a Cop. We are very fortunate to have Senior Constable Laurie involved with the school as he is already heavily engaged in supporting our students through a number of programs. As our ‘adopt a cop’ we will see even more Senior Constable Laurie around the school and at school events

In the coming weeks we have a number of opportunities for parents and community members to engage with the school:

  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnership Meeting will be held on Thursday 8th September commencing at 5.30 in C Block
  • The P&C Meeting will be held on Wednesday 14th September commencing at 5.00 in the administration building. Please note that the 2023 Student Resource Scheme will be discussed at this meeting

Next week is school support staff recognition week. During this week we take time to recognise the staff who keep our schools running, safe and connected. Some of the staff that we recognise during this week include our school officers, teacher aides, administration officers, community education counsellors, business managers, social workers, VET coordinators and youth support coordinators just to name a few.

In closing I would like to remind all students, parents and community members that this Friday 2nd September is a student free day and as such attendance is not required and the school office will be closed.

Senior Schooling

This fortnight across years 10 to 12, students have experienced many opportunities to engage with local community and stakeholders to expand their knowledge, particularly in the pathways space.

TAFE Charleville Presentation

Thursday last week, year 10 and year 11 students were involved in a presentation from TAFE Charleville which focused on pathway opportunities available to students through TAFE. This opportunity opened many conversations amongst students and we encourage students who may be considering this pathway to make an appointment with myself or Ange Walton (ILO) to discuss. Thank you to TAFE Charleville for your time, our students (and staff) learnt a lot about what TAFE has to offer!

UQ Virtual QTAC Presentation

Also, on Thursday, our year 12 ATAR Pathway students engaged in a virtual presentation with the University of Queensland where they spent the session exploring QTAC Application strategies and options. On a side note, it was great to see one of our school captains from 2021, Billy take part as a UQ mentor to educate and inspire our current year 12s. This virtual series is part one of two our year 12 (along with the year 11 ATAR students) will partake in this year. Thank you UQ for engaging with our students and allowing them the same experience virtually so that they gained the same information as that of students from the city. If year 12 students and their parents would like to continue the conversation regarding QTAC applications, please phone the school to make an appointment with myself. Alternatively, you can also email me on sxand9@eq.edu.au to make an appointment.

Year 12 Adulting Life Series

For the past couple of years, year 12 students have taken part in the Adulting Life series, as facilitated by the Charleville Neighbourhood Centre and the HOPE Program, to bring to light the realities of ‘life after school.’ To do this, stakeholders from the community come into the school from all walks of life to educate students on life skills, for example, using a JP service, applying for a bank account, legal matters to consider, just to name a few. The Neighbourhood Centre also funds the supply of the Adulting Life folders issued to all year 12 students. This series commences this week, with the folders kept at school for students to start compiling information taken from these sessions, and distributed for home use at Graduation. Thank you to the Neighbourhood Centre and the HOPE Program for supporting our school to organise this again for our students, we appreciate your investment into our year 12 students!

Senior Leadership Process

The year 11s commenced the Senior Leadership process for 2023 last week where students are able to apply for school captain & vice-captain, sport captains and Indigenous Ambassador for 2023. Applications closed yesterday. We look forward to continuing through with this process over the course of this term where nominees will present a speech and meeting with myself and Mr Norris during the interview phase. Announcement of the new school student leaders for 2023 will be at our Awards Night. We wish good luck to all those year 11 students nominating.

Year 10 final SETP Subject selection

In term 2, year 10 students and their families/carers underwent the SETP process with a teacher mentor where they discussed future pathways and selected tentative subjects (aligned to their desired pathway) for years 11 and 12. On Thursday, students will revisit their tentative subjects selected with opportunity to make final changes prior to closing this SETP process. If students are wanting to make any changes to their original subject selection, they will be asked to complete a form and meet with myself in week 9. I will also make contact with parents/carers if changes have been requested by the student to ensure we continue to work together in support of each students’ senior pathway.

There is a lot going on currently in senior school with the above merely naming but a few! Please continue to encourage your student to work hard right up until the end of term/semester. I encourage both parents/carers and students to communicate with teachers and to ask questions to gain insight on where your student is at in terms of their learning.

Wishing you all a great week 8 and 9.

WEEK 8 ASSESSMENT CYCLE

As we enter week 8, students and parents need to be aware that the assessment cycle for term 3 is well and truly underway. All classes in the Junior School are either working on assessment tasks, or revising for upcoming exams. Details of all assessment tasks can be found on the relevant year level assessment calendars (see CSHS school website).

If students are struggling with the demands of their assessment tasks, it is essential that they have a conversation with their classroom teacher. Additional time and assistance with assessment tasks is also available through our Thursday afternoon HOMEWORK CLUB.

If students are absent from school at this time of term due to illness, parents are required to contact the school to advise. Provision of medical documentation is also strongly encouraged. Extension to assessment due dates can be given under such circumstances; these extensions are granted by the relevant Head of Department, under consultation with the classroom teacher. In cases where extensions are not possible, student results can be determined by evidence collected during class time, or using draft responses.

In instances where students have extended absences, and there is no evidence of student work at all for the term, students are likely to receive an ‘N’ rating for the term. This will impact on their attainment of a JCE, and may require completion of the work at alternative times so that skills and knowledge needed for next year’s curriculum can be demonstrated.

SOME IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Students are reminded of the following:

  • Fully closed in shoes must be worn at all times at school. Students who are wearing inappropriate footwear (thongs/slides/socks/etc) will be required to sit in the office during all break times, and they will not be permitted to participate in practical classes, such as science experiments/sports/ cooking/woodwork/metalwork. These students will be given alternative theory work, which may need to be completed in the office if it is unsafe to do so in the classroom.
  • Soft drinks and energy drinks, such as Mother/Red Bull/V/etc are BANNED at the school. These beverages are NOT for sale through the school canteen, but students are purchasing them at other venues and bringing them onto school grounds. Students who choose to bring these to school will be instructed to hand them in to the office (collection to occur after 3pm).
  • Mobile phones are banned at school for students in years 7, 8 and 9. Students are reminded that they must hand their mobile phones in to the office upon arrival at school. If students are seen using their phones during school time, they will be required to take their device to the office, where it can be collected by parents after 3pm.
  • Swearing and threatening others, including teachers, is not acceptable. Students who threaten others or use inappropriate language can anticipate consequences for this behaviour, including possible suspension from school.
  • The most important reason for students to be at school is to be in class, participating and learning. Students who choose to avoid classes, or whose poor behaviour means that they can no longer be in the room, still need to gain new knowledge and develop new skills. For this reason, students who truant or who are exited from class will be expected to complete their class work during break times under supervision of their classroom teacher/HOD or Deputy Principal.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS – Author in Residence program

On Friday 26 August, we had the pleasure of meeting and working with Karen Tyrrell, author of the ‘Song Bird Superhero’ book series.

Karen Tyrrell took a group of year 7 students through a workshop focussing on adventure stories: their components, heroes and villains. Students investigated their hero’s goals and obstacles, and how to create an effective narrative.

After thinking and discussing lots of potential ideas for their story, students were off – planning, writing, editing, drawing and reading their wonderful creations. The students involved were a credit to the school, being inteested, polite and industrious for the entire time (even though it was last thing on a Friday afternoon).

Well done to all students involved in this program – Nina, Erin, Evie, Tahnee, Jordyn, Ollie, Paddy, Jayla, Tom and Jack. YOU ARE ALL SUPERSTARS!

2022 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2021, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of Next Step post-school destination surveys in 2022.
