Principal’s Note

Welcome to week 10 of Term 2, the end of another busy and productive Semester of teaching and learning. Students have now completed the majority of their assessment and teachers are busily marking, moderating and completing reporting requirements. I am very pleased with the work that I have been seeing during my regular classroom visits as well as our formal walk-throughs and also through discussions with the leadership team. The effort put in by staff and so many students across a broad range of subjects is clearly evident and I am very much looking forward to reviewing our Semester 1 results.

As A/Principal I strive to be data informed, not data driven. For me this means we design and enact strategies based on learning outcomes and continuously reflect on how our students are progressing to ensure we are delivering the best possible opportunities for success. Good results are to be celebrated and also analysed to work out why they were successful. Areas for improvement are also reviewed closely to ensure our response is well considered and delivered with fidelity.

Report cards

Report cards will be emailed home on Friday 24th of June. For parents and caregivers that do not have an active email address we prepare hard copies and mail home. Should you not receive your child’s report card please contact the office and we will have a printed copy available for collection or post them home depending on your preference.

As previously mentioned I strongly encourage discussing your child’s achievements as reflected on their report card and consider starting with the positives. One of my constant themes with students is around being the best version of yourself as often as possible because your best is absolutely good enough. I encourage students and caregivers to pay particular attention to the effort grade allocated to each student for each subject. It is the effort grade which will give you an indication of how dedicated the student is to their learning. When I discuss results with children they so often start with a negative and then when I inquire a little more deeply they can identify a range of successes. From here we focus on what worked well for them and how this could transfer to other areas, a great starting point to encourage positive outcomes.

Attendance

Attendance is a critical aspect of success in learning and the one data set displaying a negative trend. It is continuing to hover around 80% and I urge all students to aim for attendance above 87% to ensure they are giving themselves the best opportunity for success.

Even though assessments are generally finished by week 10 the learning continues with many classes already starting on the next unit of work, your support in encouraging continued attendance with your child is greatly appreciated!

Staffing for Term 3

It is very pleasing to note that the teaching staff are very stable. There will be very minimal changes in the students’ timetables. We will welcome back to our school, Olivia Taylor on 11 July. Olivia will work as a DRT on Mondays. Elizabeth Ramsdale will return on 16 August, as a fulltime DRT. We will also welcome to the school Kate Barron. Kate will be teaching in the Science and Humanities faculties.

Sadly, it is time to say farewell to one of our very devoted Head of Department, Anna Batstone. Anna first began teaching at Charleville State High School in 2006. She moved to Tambo for a few years and returned in 2012. Anna had a few years of family leave before returning as HoD – Teaching and Learning. Anna has taken on many roles besides HoD, the most recent being A/Deputy. Whilst Anna is taking leave for the remainder of the year, she will move to the Mitchell area for family reasons. We wish her well for the future.

We also have two more long term staff taking leave for the remainder of year. Cassandra Kohli, Deputy Principal and our Business Manager, Jillian Bussell. Both ladies are expected to return in 2023. We are currently endeavouring to temporarily fill their positions.

In closing

As we finish Semester One I would like to congratulate staff and students for the successes achieved and the foundation being built for continued positive outcomes. A strong performance in a variety of performance indicators, great outcomes from events such as the ANZAC ceremony, Parent-Teacher Interviews, Shearing Camp, Deadly Recruits and Year 10 work experience to name just some of the fantastic opportunities and outcomes achieved.

These achievements do not just happen, they are built on a foundation of effort and care for and from our students. The role played by parents, caregivers and extended family is so important and builds the sense of community that makes up Charleville State High School.

I wish all families and students the very best for a safe and restful Winter vacation and look forward to school resumption on Monday, July 11th.

All the best,
Narelle Webb

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL SENIOR SCHOOLING

Some Changes

This will be my last newsletter article as the Deputy Principal of Senior Schooling in 2022 as I will be taking leave for the remainder of the year. This decision was not made lightly however it has been necessary. A decision will be made shortly regarding who will be filling the position for the remainder of the year.

I wish the current year 12 students, and all of the students at Charleville State High School, well and I hope for their success throughout the remainder of the year. I look forward to seeing all of our current year 12’s on the stage for graduation at the end of the year.

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10’s will finish the term with their work experience block. A huge thank you to Ange Walton, our Industry Liaison Officer for her tireless work with these students and businesses to ensure that all students had the opportunity to attend a work place. Also, a thank-you to the businesses who have generously agreed to host our students and provide them with a genuine work experience.

Hopefully this is a valuable experience for our students and may provide some future opportunities for those who are seeking traineeships or apprenticeships as they complete senior schooling.

Spark their Future – How can I make a difference?

The teenage years can be a difficult time to navigate for young people. Teens have a lot going on with study, friendships and home life; not to mention the many changes associated with their brain development. If your teen is struggling at school or at home, your support can make all the difference. Hear from parenting expert Maggie Dent on how to identify the signs that could indicate your teen needs help and what you can do to support them. The Spark their Future website has a short video on how you can make a difference.
