Newsletter Articles

Principal’s Note

Welcome to week 6 of Term 4, already we are well past the half way mark of the Term and closing in quickly on the conclusion to the 2021 school year. For our Year 12’s this is the final newsletter of their schooling journey so I will take the opportunity to congratulate them in advance for all their hard work.

For the class of 2021 their final two years of school has certainly been an interesting journey, not only navigating still fresh Senior processes with changes such as ATAR and how the Queensland Certificate of Education is calculated but also dealing with interruptions and the uncertainty caused by Covid. I am full of admiration for how our Seniors, wonderfully represented by our student leaders, have coped with everything thrown at them and so very proud to be able to farewell them on behalf of the school community at the upcoming Formal and Graduation ceremonies.

It is a special time for parents, caregivers, family and friends when senior students work through their final days as Secondary school students. For those who are finishing their association with Charleville State High School thank-you and all the best for the next phase of family life. For those with younger siblings I look forward to continuing to work together to support great outcomes for our students.

Year 12 Formal and Graduation

The Year 12 Formal will be held at the Racecourse on Wednesday the 17th of November, starting at approximately 5.00pm. Community members are most welcome to come along and watch the arrivals of students, while the actual dinner is by invitation only for students and invited guests.

Graduation will take place in the school hall on Friday the 19th of November, beginning around 9.00am. At the conclusion of the ceremony we will farewell our students with a clap out as they undertake a drive through our school grounds. Community members are most welcome to watch the clap out as we formally close the chapter for the 2021 Year 12 graduates.

2022 Break times

After consultation with staff, parents (P&C, ATSI Community Partnerships, newsletters, Facebook) and students the decision has been made to adjust the timetable for 2022 to encompass two breaks in the school day. There is no change to the start and finish times of school and there is no reduction in the time that students have in class or the actual amount of time for breaks. The new schedule will be:

Period 1

8.50am to 10.00am

Form

10.00am to 10.10am

Period 2

10.15am to 11.25am (includes 5-minute transition from Form)

Break 1

11.25am to 12.00pm

Period 3

12.00pm to 1.10pm

Break 2

1.10pm to 1.45pm

Period 4

1.45pm to 2.55pm

Thanks to all who provided feedback during this process, much appreciated. We will be monitoring this change for 2022 and will report back through the P&C and newsletter to keep parents informed of any impacts.

2022 Next Step survey

The Queensland Government will conduct its annual state-wide survey of Year 12 completers in 2022. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.

Between March and June next year, our current Year 12 students will receive a letter from the Minister for Education or an email or phone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office inviting you to complete the survey. To enable them to reach you, please ensure your contact details are correct in your learning account by logging into the student portal via the link below.

GP’s in Schools – Pilot School

Charleville SHS is very proud to announce our school has been selected to participate in the GPs in Schools Pilot as part of the Queensland Government’s Student Wellbeing Package. There is still a lot of work to be done to have everything in pace and we are expecting to be operational by Term 2 or a little earlier if works can be completed to upgrade facilities.

All secondary students will be able to make an appointment to see our GP. Our GP will be working at school one day every week during school terms to provide students with free and confidential healthcare. More details will be released as we finalise arrangements regarding the process to follow and the day that the GP will be working.

Working together

It’s often said that two heads are better than one, and at Charleville State High School we couldn’t agree more. We strive to be a safe and respectful school community and are keen to collaborate with parents to give our students the best possible education.

To do this we need your help. These simple things will go a long way to helping your child succeed:

  • make sure your child comes to school every day ready to learn
  • ensure they arrive and leave school safely on time
  • read and encourage your child to understand and follow the Student Code of Conduct and
  • if you do have a concern please speak with us so we can do our best to understand and respond.

Remember we are working together for your child. Your child, our student. One team.

In closing

Term 4 is always a busy, exciting, occasionally hectic time for schools as we simultaneously aim to complete the school year positively as well as prepare for 2022. We support the current Year 6’s to step into Secondary with transitions days and enrolment interviews while we bid farewell to Year 12’s. Final preparations are underway for assessment, marking and reporting and staff are also busily updating units of work and assessment items for Term 1 next year. The administration team is well into closing off finance and associated accountabilities whilst planning for budget considerations for 2022.

Through all of this the focus must remain on our students and the staff is highly committed to exactly this. My message to both staff and students for Term 4 continues to be “finish strong” and to use our school beliefs and values to support being at our best as often as possible. By working together, we continue to give all our children the best opportunities we possibly can, thanks as always for your support with this.

All the best,

Barry Wallett

Final Week for Year 12 Students

Rapidly approaching now is the final week for our year 12 students. It has been one very busy year with a lot happening however the students have kept on with their studies and are now at the final stage of their high school life.

In week 7, students will be expected at school as scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday where they will complete a range of activities. Some of these will be directly related to setting up, preparing for and packing up the senior formal. Students and parents/carers should receive more information regarding the arrangements for week 7 via email.

Friday morning (November 19) will be the senior graduation and then our students will head off onto their next big adventure. Hopefully they remember to stay in contact and let the school know how 2022 goes for them whether they head into work, training, the military, TAFE or university.

Keeping Track of Your QCE and Year 12 End of Year Results

Students in years 11 and 12 are reminded that they can keep track of their progress through senior school by accessing myQCE (https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/). This will show students their enrolled subjects, will update with results, as well as other learning (such as VET courses, traineeships, apprenticeships, TAFE enrolments, etc).

It is very important that year 12 students have logged into their learning account as this is how they will access their end of year results. These will be released to students through the student portal from December 17.

All students in year 12 should have already registered their learning account in year 11 and accessed it throughout the year, however if students are requiring assistance they should ask for this in week 7 to ensure they can access their results.

Transition to Senior

Our year 10 students are trialling their year 11 subject selections and while some have found the transition smooth others are finding some challenges.

Students are welcome to make an appointment to discuss their subject choices and pathway with me through the office.

Some things students should consider:

  1. Study will need to be completed outside of the classroom. This includes specific homework tasks but also means reviewing lesson notes and sending the teacher questions about content that was not understood.
  2. Help is available for study Thursday afternoons at study club and students are encouraged to attend. They will need to speak with their teacher prior to Thursday to ensure the teacher is available. If Thursday afternoon doesn’t work, students can speak with their teacher to organise another time that the teacher can be available to support them.
  3. Students should consider what their pathway after school will be and what their options are for achieving that. There are multiple pathways through senior and students need to ensure they are on the one that suits them. This may include school-based work-placements, traineeships or apprenticeships. Should students take this path, they need to be aware that they will miss some learning at school. A study line is provided to allow students this opportunity to catch up, but that time needs to be used for study and review.

These final few weeks are very valuable to our students as they help them to determine if they are on the right path and, if not, this is the perfect time to organise a meeting to discuss supports, options and to make some adjustments if needed.

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

Year seven, eight and nine students are not allowed to have phones at school. Older students are permitted to have their phones in their possession, however cannot use them during school hours. The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone at school, then the student is required to hand their phone to the office, a parent will be contacted to arrange collection. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material at all times.

Diagnostic Testing (PAT R and PAT M)

At Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan. All students in Year 7, 8, and 9 are given a diagnostic Reading Comprehension test in term 4 as well as a Mathematics diagnostic test. We use this valuable data along with the Academic and teachers’ anecdotal notes to plan for the future to ensure that students reach their potential.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families to inform of each child’s attendance in the junior school. Well done to the many students who achieve this goal.

Student Support Centre

We have a well-established Student Support Centre. C block houses our CEC, our YSC, Mrs Katie McLeod, our SBYHN, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as our Beyond Broncos staff member. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own.

Bullying at Charleville SHS

Charleville State High School has a coordinated effort to encourage students to report if they are being harmed or know of someone being harmed. Bullying is a term that has been used widely in the media. There numerous definitions of Bullying.

  • When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once.
    That is rude.
  • When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once.
    That is mean.
  • When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it – even when you tell them to stop or show them that you are upset.
    That is bullying.

There are occasions where a student feels too uncomfortable to report an issue. This is when we encourage the use of the Stymie website. Students are able to anonymously report concerns. This report is taken seriously and is acted upon immediately.

Use of technology outside of school

There is numerous research on the amount of screen time a young person should have before it affects their welling. Parents need to monitor carefully their teenager especially when they are in contact with others online. Phones and ipads etc should not be in the bedroom prior to sleeping. It is evident that a number of students have disturbed sleep patterns and consequently affects their ability to concentrate at school.
