Principal’s Note

Welcome back to Term 3 after what I hope was a thoroughly enjoyable winter vacation! I am sure that you join me in also hoping for a predominantly “normal’ school Term to enable consistency and certainty for all of us, particularly so for our students.

The Term has started well with classes getting straight back into their learning and, for many students, adapting to the new Semester 2 timetable. Now that some restrictions have been eased we will be conducting whole school assemblies in the hall every second Monday (odd weeks) at 11.30am. Sport will also be getting underway again albeit with a range of additional conditions to support safe practices for Covid-19 and information will be disseminated via permission notes, Facebook, emails and the newsletter.

Staff Welcome

A warm welcome to 2 new staff:

  • Olivia Taylor who joins us as a Science and Maths teacher
  • Tony Kim who will be working as a District Relieving Teacher

Both Olivia and Tony have made a great start by working hard to be ready on Day 1 of the Term to then allow a clear focus on getting to know the students. They are both quickly becoming valuable team members and I am very pleased to have them join the team.

Report Cards

Report cards were emailed home on Friday 17 July. Any families who did not have a current email address will receive report cards via post and if there are any concerns with this process please contact the office and we will organise a paper version to be available for you.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher interviews will be conducted on Friday, July 29. For more details on how to book an interview please check the information provided on your child’s report card and Mrs Kohli (Deputy Principal - Senior) has also included an overview of the process in her section of the newsletter.

Every Day Counts

It has been very satisfying to see the majority of the students back at school for every day of Week 1. School attendance will be an ongoing focus for myself and the entire staff as we strive to maximise the learning opportunities available through consistent attendance and engagement in class activities.

Your support in enabling your children to come to school on time and with all their learning materials organised is vital and very much appreciated. Please do not hesitate to contact the school should you have any concerns with the provision of items such as uniform or payments for extra-curricular activities and we will actively look for support options to promote positive partnerships.

P&C and Indigenous Community Partnerships Meetings

Our next P&C meeting is scheduled for 5.00pm this Wednesday (22 July) and the Indigenous Community Partnerships meeting will be held on Thursday (23 July) at 3.30pm. The venue for both will be the school office. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear parent and community member voices and to contribute to informing school decisions and directions so please come along if you are available.

In closing

As we move through Term 3 of a very challenging 2020 it remains very important that we work together in supporting our students, not only in their academic learning but also in terms of resilience and confidence. To facilitate this we have implemented timetable adjustments to have dedicated time every week to run a program focused on wellbeing and resilience as well as continuing our work around Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). The aim is to ensure students are as well prepared as possible to be ready to learn, academically, socially and emotionally and I look forward to sharing stories of success from this initiative.

All the best,

Barry Wallett

Reporting and Parent-Teacher Interviews

Reports were emailed out to all parents/carers Friday afternoon using the provided email contact. For those parents without email, a printed copy has been posted. Parents and students are able to request a printed copy from the office should it be required. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to talk with their students about their progress at school and to set goals for the following semester.

We are excited to be able to hold parent-teacher interviews at the school on the 29th of July from 3:30pm. Please use the link below to book an appointment with any of the teaching staff. If you are requiring an interview for a class taken by Taylor Richards in semester 1, the Head of Department, Amy Roughan, is happy to meet with you to discuss your student as Mr Richards is no longer with us.

https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70203

There will be some changes to parent-teacher interviews this year due to COVID. Interviews will take place in either the library or in the office area. On arrival you will be directed to the room where your first interview is taking place.

We look forward to seeing you and discussing your student’s progress.

Year 12 Students

It is going to be a super busy term for year 12 students as they are completing learning and assessment, they are preparing for formal, the sports carnival will be held as will the colour run. Hopefully students will be engaged in classes and also taking advantage of the other great opportunities to make some memories for their final year of school.

Students pursuing an ATAR will soon be given information regarding applying through QTAC for further studies. Parents seeking further information about this process are welcome to contact the school or can go to the QTAC website.

https://www.qtac.edu.au/for-parents

Year 11 Students

With semester 1 reports completed year 11 students have an opportunity now to reflect on their subject selection and pathway through senior. While many students have already had conversations around subject changes, it may be a good time to review their senior plan (available to them through OneSchool) and to make an appointment to discuss options.

Year 11’s should have completed any subject changes by the end of week 2 as new work is well and truly underway and students who leave it much later will find themselves falling behind.

Year 10 Students

Students will soon be having appointments with the school’s new Industry Liaison Officer (ILO) Brittany Pawley who will be seeking to find out what work students are interested in for a term 4 work experience week. This is an exciting opportunity for students to try a potential workplace prior to entering into a school based traineeship or apprenticeship or to help them decide what they really would like to do after they leave school. Hopefully students engage in these discussions and begin to look for opportunities for themselves outside of school.

Timetable

Your student will have received a new timetable at the beginning of Term 3. Subjects can only be changed in the first two weeks of the semester. The correct process must be followed.

  1. Official change of subject form is collected from office.
  2. Students must see their current teacher and the Head’s of Departments for the subject they wish to change as well as the subject they wish to change into.
  3. Not until the relevant staff members are consulted by the student and/or parents can the subjects be changed.
  4. Contact with the relevant Head of Department is necessary to discuss the best for their child’s education.

The new timetable reflects a number of improvements made to the school curriculum and follows the recommendations made for the minimum amount of time to be spent instructing in specific curriculum areas.

MESH

In Term 3, 2020, the school will continue the MESH (Maths, English, Science and Humanities) program to provide students with a more challenging and engaging learning environment. This program involves the creation of combined year 7 and 8 classes as well as year 9 and 10 classes (No MESH Humanities in year 9 and 10). This will not affect the students’ elective classes.

This student selection is based on:

  1. Academic reporting data
  2. Diagnostic data (including NAPLAN, PAT-R and PAT-M)
  3. Attendance data
  4. Effort and Behaviour data.

To remain in the program students in this class are expected to maintain a high standard of achievement, behaviour, and engagement in learning, as well as maintain a high rate of attendance at school. In past years, we have held parent information evenings to address MESH classes, however due to restrictions in 2020 of holding public gatherings we have had to postpone any meetings.

Who can support your student at CSHS?

There are many people who can help your student if they need it. I would recommend you have a list of emails to be able to contact staff or ring the school to have a chat or organise a meeting.

Reading Program

Reading is the focus for Charleville State High School. We are focusing on students significantly under the regional reading benchmark. We are very successful with our reading program. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program - otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved.

We are very pleased to address the concern that students in the reading program were missing curriculum time to attend the valuable reading support classes. However, now if students are in either LLI or MultiLit the following occurs:

Students will attend either….

Year Seven :
Japanese/ LLI/IAP and MultiLit

Year Eight:
Humanities/LLI/IAP and MultiLit

Year Nine:
Second Elective/LLI
MultiLit occurs during Pastoral care and The Charleville Literacy and Numeracy program.

The above eliminates the need for any student to miss curriculum time.

The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program, please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Sue McDermott at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy).

Junior and Senior Form class

We have extra form classes in both the junior and middle school called FMJ1 and FMM2 (J stands for Junior, M for Middle). Students in each of these form classes were carefully considered for extra support that they may require.

Student Services

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

Students in years 7, 8 & 9 are not permitted to have a phone at school.

A large number of students have mobile phones at school. I would like to emphasise that at no time from 8:40am to 3:00pm does a student require to use a phone at school. If urgent phone calls are needed to be made, students are allowed to call from the office. Rarely a school subject requires the student to use their phone. Phones, in general, are not allowed in a classroom. If students use their phone they will be directed to hand their phone into the office and home will be notified to arrange collection. If any student posts images taken at school on social media the consequences include possible suspension and then that student if in the senior school will be banned for having a phone at school for the rest of the year.

It has been brought to our attention from the Police that there is an increased amount of inappropriate use of data being used and received by young people in Charleville. I would like to bring to the attention of parents/carers of students under the age of sixteen that you are responsible for what is stored on their phone. As a responsible parent/carer you should be checking the phone for what is being received and what is being sent via their phone. Should your child receive inappropriate material via their phone, it must be reported to the police immediately.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Unless supervised, children including students of Charleville State High School are not allowed on the school grounds outside of school hours. Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours and are concerned that these children are not adequately supervised.

Bullying

Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim” has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year Level Coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form at school. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website (www.stymie.com.au) to report any such issues.

Uniforms

There has been a marked improvement in the standard of uniform in the first week. Thank you to all families who send their students in correct uniform. To ensure that all students can access the correct uniform and keep warm, the P&C have reduced the cost of the school jersey from $45 to $35. Extra hoodies with the school emblem have been delivered to the school. The uniform shop is open before school on Tuesdays only.

Until next time,

Year 11 and 12 Update

With the chaos and uncertainty of COVID 19 last term, the senior students in Grade 11 and 12 are entering Term 3 in a positive frame of mind and relief, knowing that approval has been granted for the Grade 12 Formal at the end of Term 3 and a Grade 11 Leadership Camp.

Grade 12 students are slowly putting plans in place for their formal which will occur on Thursday 17th September. Numerous fundraisers have already occurred, with the last fundraiser a sausage sizzle. The grade 12’s would like to thank, Heinemann’s Bakery for the donation of bread, and Dunne’s Butchery for their supply of sausages in their fundraising endeavours. Other fundraising ideas are also coming to fruition with year 12 students designing a sponge throwing cut out (see photo) with the help of Mr Jake Clarke and Miss Elizabeth Ramsdale. This will take place in week 3.

The grade 11’s are also breathing a sigh of relief Education Queensland has approved camps for the remainder of the term to Education Queensland Camps. The students will be off in week 5, Term 4 to Maroon Dam. More information will be released in the following weeks.

Science in Practice – Safety in Forensics

For Term 3, the students are learning about forensic techniques. To begin, students needed to understand the importance of securing a crime scene. To do this, one student got kitted up in a full hazmat suit (minus safety glasses). By doing some role play, students got a better understanding of safety on a crime scene.

Industrial Technology & Design

Watercraft – designed and manufactured by our year 9’s.
