Principal’s Note

Hello and welcome to my Principal’s Note for Week 4.

Where has the time gone? It is hard to believe that we are drawing closer to another week of teaching and learning. As we venture on into Week 5, I anticipate a busy and productive finish to the 2019 school year.

Good luck and thank you all in advance. The job in finalising the year will not be easy, but it will be rewarding at the end.

School Opinion Survey 2019

Below is a highlights report for 2019 with a comparison to the 2018 survey. As illustrated, it is clear to see that we have improved satisfaction in some areas and a declined satisfaction in other areas. This data will be used to help inform our improvement agenda for 2020.

Deputy Principal Senior Schooling Report

Bandana Day – Thursday 7th November 2019

The school has nominated to celebrate Bandana Day on Thursday 7th November this year.

National Bandanna Day is the major fundraising and awareness campaign for CanTeen Australia. This powerful campaign has generated over $30 million to support young people affected by cancer. In the last three years alone, the National Bandanna Day message reached 20 million Australians and 1.2 million of them supported the campaign by purchasing merchandise.

CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and – if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, provide specialist youth-specific treatment teams.

The acknowledgement of this day is driven by Ashtyn Shearwin (Yr10). Everyone is encouraged to buy a bandana and are free to add a donation at the front office.

The Final Countdown

Our Year 12 students are in the final weeks of their secondary schooling. We are impressing upon our Year 12’s that they must maintain focus through to the end, even though this can be challenging, when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Preparations are well underway for the Awards Night, Formal and Graduation, so students are reminded to listen to notices for important announcements. If parents have any queries or concerns, please contact the school.

The New QCE has required that we adjust timing for some key school events, some of which only affect the Year 12’s directly, but have flow on affects to the greater school community. The school specific dates have been discussed and decided on at LTM, and presented to the P&C.

Our Year 12’s are counting down the days until their Year 12 Formal on Saturday 9th November. The evening will kick off at the Racecourse, with arrivals occurring from 5pm – 6pm. The official proceedings will begin at 6:30pm.

The students have been working hard to prepare their choreographed dance and all the decorations for the night. It is looking to be a magnificent night, when all of our fine young people celebrate the end of their secondary schooling.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2019, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QTAC

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) operates a centralised tertiary application service for:

  • publicly-funded Queensland universities
  • Bond University Medicine
  • TAFE Queensland
  • Australian Maritime College
  • some courses at publicly-funded universities in Northern New South Wales
  • some private tertiary education providers.

These institutions have complete control in determining their own entry requirements.

QTAC assess applications using these entry requirements and then make offers to successful applicants during the offer rounds.

As well as managing applications for the above institutions, QTAC publish course information for some institutions that accept their own applications directly.

Below are a number of forms for students to complete, for the Educational Access Scheme. This scheme is to ensure that students who have had any issues that have affected their education acknowledged and reflected in the OP score that they receive. Students have been working on these applications in Pastoral Care.

QCE Tracking

Mr Wastie and I are closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Week 4, Term 4

Timetable

2020 Timetable. In term 3, students in years 7, 8 and 9 received letters regarding elective subjects for 2020. For 2020, the most popular electives in each line will run for year 8, 9 and 10 students. Students will be notified later in the year if they were unable to be placed in their chosen elective.

Year Six Transition day

The second transition day for year six students in term 4 occurred on Tuesday 29th October. The students were excellent and we look forward to working with our future year 7 students. Thank you to the HOD of Junior Schooling, Sabrina Goodingham and the staff who made the second transition day successful.

Junior Leaders 2019

Nominated students will give speeches for the positions of 2020 Junior Leader, Junior Vice Leader, Junior House Captains and Year Level Representatives. The nominated students will go through an interview process with the leaders announced on Speech Night, Wednesday 6th November.

Junior Certificate of Education (JCE)

In the last week of school, Tuesday 3rd December, students in year nine who have gained enough points to achieve a JCE will be formally recognised in a ceremony at school. Parents and the community are welcome to attend and invitations will be sent to families. This ceremony will acknowledge the hard work the year nine students have done over the three years in the junior school and their movement into the senior school.

Year Nine Camp

It was a very successful camp for most of the year nine students to Coolum. I thank Mrs Kate Jackson for the excellent organisation of the trip and well supervised by Ms Andreatta, Ms Candice Luff and Mr Jackson Benstead. Mrs Goodingham also worked tirelessly to ensure the camp was subsidised by fund raising efforts. The staff involved in the camp were full of praise of our resilient students.

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

Students in Years 7 and 8 are not allowed to have a mobile phone at school. They are not mature enough to use the phones in an appropriate manner. The young students need the supervision and support of their family when addressing Social Media issues etc.

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone of older students at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

Immunisation

Year Seven students received their second round of HPV immunisations this term. The year seven students handled the situation maturely and responsibly. They are a wonderful cohort. We are very fortunate to have an excellent working relationship with Queensland Health to ensure our students receive the best possible care available.

Reading

At Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan/focus.

As parents, you can help your students in many aspects:

  1. Model reading to them. Read interesting articles to them and take the time to discuss and value each other’s opinions.
  2. Encourage students regardless of age to read for at least 20 minutes every day.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

Our Student Support Centre is well established at Charleville SHS. C block houses our CEC - Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC - Mrs Katie McLeod, our SBYHN - Mrs Jen Frazer, our Chaplain - Mr Les Penrose as well as the appointed Beyond Broncos staff member - Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own. It is appreciated if you were able to assist in the form of donations. As only fruit is offered in the third break, Donations of fruit would be a great benefit.

Resilience

One of Charleville State High School’s Values is RESILIENCE. I found a You Tube clip that demonstrates the use of resilience when a student is being verbally bullied. I urge you as parents to investigate Brooks Gibbs also. The you tube clip I found interesting is

HOME ECONOMICS HAPPENINGS

Term 4 sees Senior Hospitality students attempting to persuade a local business to add a new item to their current breakfast menu, as year 10’s continue to demonstrate all required competencies in order to gain their Certificate I in Hospitality. This week sees them perform their final Café 10 event – a Chicken Parmigiana Party for staff.

Designing, constructing and embellishing a pair of boxer shorts is the final textiles project for the year 8 Home Economics class, and the last rotation of year 7’s are having their turn gaining knowledge about healthy snacking, and using their newly acquired skills to create a healthy afternoon tea snack as their assessment task.

READING ROUNDUP

A huge congratulations to Zechariah Carmody, who successfully read 15 books during the 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Zechariah will receive his certificate from the Queensland Premier at a parade this week, and he has also earned 15 points for his sporting house, Kokoda. Well done Zechariah.

Recycling at Charleville State High

Since Easter, Charleville State High has been collecting containers that students purchase from the canteen that would normally go into landfill. While it might not seem like much, the school has raised over $1200 this year, from the collection of containers. While the grounds staff have noticed the huge difference that this has made in regards to rubbish at the school.

The money raised will go to building a Bushtucker Garden in the schools agriculture department, for students in both Ag science and the grade 9 Humanities program, which will incorporate sustainable foods into their curriculum next year.

Instrumental Music

Application forms for 2020 have been handed out to students. If you are interested in learning an instrument next year please return application form by week 8.

Reading Disorders

Parents/Caregivers, did you know that the Reading Centre provides a Reading disorders service for educators and parents of students who are at risk of or experiencing difficulties learning to read? The centre provides professional learning workshops and webinars.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

Empowerment through self-awareness and self-advocacy.

Students with dyslexia are at risk for long-term educational and social-emotional consequences, including poor self-esteem and poor self-perception of social and academic competence. Engaging a student, or their advocate, in planning and decision making in relation to their learning gives students with dyslexia the opportunity to be heard and to develop and enact self-advocacy skills. For students to develop self-advocacy skills, they need to understand their specific needs, know what will help or support those needs, and have the confidence and avenues to communicate those needs to teachers and others.

Parents and educators can build the self-advocacy skills of young people with dyslexia through:

  • talking with the student about individual strengths and weaknesses
  • encouraging the student’s efforts at speaking up
  • encouraging the student to use classroom accommodations including assistive technologies, and
  • giving the student a say in educational decisions.

Don’t wait for a cybercriminal to steal your identity – take control of your online identity today with a few easy steps:

  • Setting your social media to private. Cybercriminals can piece together info from your social media and all over the internet to steal your identity. Check the privacy settings on your devices, apps and social media so that you’re only sharing information with people you know. Complete your privacy check-up.
  • Using a different password for each of your important online accounts. Passwords are the first line of defence against cybercriminals. If you’re using the same password on multiple accounts, by guessing one of your passwords a cybercriminal could access all of your accounts. Make a pledge for better password security.
  • Never provide your details via a link in a message. Scam messages are one of the most common ways cybercriminals try to steal your information online. Think you know how to spot a scam? Put your skills to the test – take the quiz.

Social Enterprise Grants Open

Social enterprises can be non-profit, for-profit or hybrid businesses that exist to benefit the public and community and are established to address a range of cultural, social and environmental issues.

The Social Enterprise Grants Program will provide assistance between $5,000 to $50,000 to enable social enterprises to access professional advice and support in the critical early stages of establishing and growing their business, and to assist in testing ideas in the market or using technology to achieve their reach and mission.

Funding of between $5,000 and $50,000 (excluding GST) may be provided to eligible social enterprises to engage business consultants, mentors or digital experts to assist them to establish and grow their business and to grow their mission.

Social enterprises eligible to apply for this grant are those based in Queensland that meet the following definition:

  • led by an economic, social, cultural or environmental mission consistent with a public or community benefit
  • trades to fulfil their mission and derive more than 50% of their income from trade
  • reinvest the majority of any profit/surplus into the fulfilment of their mission.

Charleville Deb Ball 2020

It is coming to that time again. The Charleville Debutante Ball committee will be holding an information meeting on Sunday 24th November at 2pm at Charleville Lion’s Den for all eligible young ladies and their partners.
