PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

STAFFING NEWS

As I write this newsletter article, I am still coming to terms with the fact that I will not be at the school for the finish of the year as I prepare to take up the Acting Principal position at Beerwah State High School. This opportunity, while exciting, also fills me with a fair amount of sadness, and I am disappointed that I am not going to see the current Year 12s graduate at the end of this year. They are an amazing group of students, all with a story and all with their own challenges that they have faced to make it and complete their 12 years of schooling. To each of these students, I sincerely wish them all the best for what I am sure will be amazing futures for each and every one of them.

All parents and guardians should have received a letter from their students informing you that I will be commencing as Acting Principal at Beerwah State High School on Monday 2 September. Mr Justin Washington, will be commencing on the same date as Acting Principal of Charleville State High School.

I received a phone call the previous Monday offering me the position until the end of the year. My wife and I discussed this opportunity at length before a decision was made. I have often stated to the students that they need to take opportunities when presented to them, and so I have also decided to take this opportunity presented to me. At present, the position is as Acting Principal until the end of the year. I will certainly keep the school and the community informed if this changes at any time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents, guardians and the Charleville community for the support and friendship that so many of you have extended to myself and my wife in our time here at Charleville State High School. It is a difficult decision to leave friends and family from where you come from and take up residence in a new place, so far from them all. But the genuine friendship and friendliness of so many people in the Charleville community has made the last three years so enjoyable and made it easy to call Charleville home over our time here.

As Principal of the school, I am so proud of the staff and the students every day. The staff of Charleville State High School work incredible hours, giving up weekends and nights at times, to ensure that all students at Charleville State High School have every opportunity to receive a great education and the opportunity to be involved in a multitude of experiences during their time at Charleville State High School.

The students have impressed me from day one with their respect and friendliness, and I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved with each one of them over the last 3 years. I am so impressed how each of them has developed, matured and continued to work on becoming a better student, and more importantly, better people.

I would like to thank the leadership team at the school for the amazing work they do, and for the incredible support they have given me in my time at Charleville State High School. The school is very fortunate to have teachers of the calibre of these people, with everything they do and every decision they make having the best interests of each student at heart.

I would also like to thank the P&C committee for their efforts, hard work and support as well over the last three years. There have been changes to the committee over that time, but every person who has been involved has shown incredible support for myself, as well as the students and staff of Charleville State High School.

Thank you also to the Murweh Shire, including Mayor Annie Liston and her team, CWAATSICH staff, the HOPE Foundation as well as the many other support networks in town that have helped our students over the past years – your assistance and support has been invaluable.

I wish all students and their families all the best for the remainder of 2019 and beyond. Thank you everyone.

Think the Drink Program

On Tuesday 8th October (first day of Term 4), the Year 11 and Year 12 students will be participating in the ‘Think the Drink’ Program. This is a full day program organised by Queensland Health and held at the Charleville RSL.

The day is designed to encourage young people to make healthy choices and will include presentations from the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, RAAP and Red Frogs. Students will also participate in a ‘pit stop’ activity, where they can speak to representatives from CWAATSICH, the Neighbourhood Centre, Drug Arm and SQRH.

The students will all meet at the RSL at 8:45am and the day will conclude at 3pm. Those students who travel on buses to school will be transported to and from school. Information and permission notes will come out to parents soon.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2019, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test

A big thank you to the P&C, parent volunteers and Year 11 students who helped out at the QCS Breakfast on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This breakfast allows students to come together and have a relaxing and hearty breakfast before heading into the QCS.

QTAC

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) operates a centralised tertiary application service for:

  • publicly-funded Queensland universities
  • Bond University Medicine
  • TAFE Queensland
  • Australian Maritime College
  • some courses at publicly-funded universities in Northern New South Wales
  • some private tertiary education providers.

These institutions have complete control in determining their own entry requirements.

QTAC assess applications using these entry requirements and then make offers to successful applicants during the offer rounds.

As well as managing applications for the above institutions, QTAC publish course information for some institutions that accept their own applications directly.

Below are a number of forms for students to complete, for the Educational Access Scheme. This scheme is to ensure that students who have had any issues that have affected their education acknowledged and reflected in the OP score that they receive. Students have been working on these applications in Pastoral Care.

QCE Tracking

Mr Wastie and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Vanessa Moller at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Vanessa Moller on 4656 8888.

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone is occasionally reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student will be prevented from bringing their phone to school. It is the parents’ and/or carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours. It is concerning the number of students on school grounds out of school hours. It is essential that children be adequately supervised at all times.

Stymie

Our school uses the services of the Stymie team. This wonderful organisation allows students to report anonymously any harm/bullying that they may witness or may be occurring to them. The process the school takes is as follows:

  1. A stymie notification is received.
  2. Investigation occurs immediately to confirm validity.
  3. Parents of the accused are contacted within 24 hours and asked to work as a team to address the situation with their student.
  4. Upon the advice of the parent, the student is given an explanation of the concern that is reported and they are given the right of reply.
  5. Continued monitoring to assure that both the accused and receiver of harm is supported.

Immunisation Year Seven Students

The immunization program for year seven students will continue in Term 3.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working towards the Year Nine Camp to the North Coast that has been organised for them. We look forward to hearing the wonderful adventures they will experience.

Until next time,

NAPLAN

RELEASE OF NAPLAN 2019 SUMMARY INFORMATION

The NAPLAN 2019 summary information provides preliminary results at the national, and state and territory level for each school year assessed and for all domains in NAPLAN. The data provides comparisons of 2019 results with 2018 and with base years (2008 for numeracy, reading and conventions of language; and 2011 for writing).

NAPLAN is in a period of transition, and this year around 50 per cent of schools across the country undertook NAPLAN online. Charleville SHS was one of the schools who undertook the NAPLAN online.

Mr Samson, Mrs Goodingham and myself examined the data last week and were pleased with the results.

Highlights include:

1.

Student percentages above National Minimum Standards (NMS) have increased for the current year nine cohort across all 5 areas of testing:

2017
(year 7)

2019
(year 9)

Strand

NMS %

Numeracy

73.8

95.8

G&P

78.6

91.7

73.1

2.

In year 7 improvement from 2018 to 2019 in NMS % in 4 of tested areas – Reading, G&P, Spelling, Writing, with mean score improvements from 2018 in three areas – Reading, Spelling and Writing (significant!)

3.

In Year 9 from 2018 to 2019, improvement in 4 of the tested areas, Numeracy, G&P, Spelling, writing, while mean score improvements across all 5 of the tested areas.

4.

Significant growth in students from Year 7 to Year 9 (mean scores).

According to an article in the Courier Mail last week Charleville State High School is ranked 11th across the state for best improving High School.

This is very exciting data. The introduction of the MESH program and the Junior Certificate of Education are two significant programs which I believe have contributed to the impressive improvement of students and creating an academic culture in the school.

I shall give a more detailed report at the next P & C meeting.

Defence Force Recruiting

September information sessions. For students interested in a career in the Australian Defence Force.

This is the perfect opportunity for students and their parents to meet the team and ask questions. It is also a great opportunity for those interested in Army Reserves to chat to local reservists and find out more about local opportunities and locations from the team.

Priority Role – Chef

Did you know that the Army, Navy and Air Force all have hospitality roles currently available?

This role may be perfect for students who enjoy planning and preparing meals. To apply students require a minimum pass in year 10 English and Mathematics.

For more information see attached flyer.

Oakey Exploration Day – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Opportunity

Defence Force Recruiting Toowoomba along with Kieren, Jason and Maciu from our Indigenous team will be hosting our Exploration Day at Oakey Swartz Base on Thursday, 10th October.

The day is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in years 11 and 12 to sit the first stage of the Defence application process (YOU Session – this includes aptitude testing, medical and careers counselling) to see what opportunities are available to them post year 12! Following the YOU session students will be transported to Oakey Swartz Base for a guided tour and participate in displays.

Building a Culture of Music

A number of new initiatives and developments have occurred last semester that will benefit the instrumental music program and build a strong culture of music in our school, they are:

  • New and refurbished instruments donated by Gift of Music (a division of Rural Aid) – new Cello, Double Bass, Clarinet and Trombone.
  • Redesign and additional cleaning of the music classroom “The Donga”.
  • Establishment of extra-curricular bands and community orchestra.
  • Scholarships for two (2) year 6 students to enrol in instrumental music in 2020.

Semester Curriculum Focus

The curriculum has three dimensions: Literacy, Technique and Musicality. The literacy of applying music symbols and instructions to performance and technique studies will be the focus for term 3. Further, students will create a vocabulary list of words used by musicians. In term 4, we will focus on sight-reading and building capacity for end of year performances.

Zen Zen Zo.

On the 16th of August, 14 very excited students and 3 staff headed off to the big smoke. Not knowing what to expect with the performance, only knowing that we would be included in the performance and that there were no seats.

The bus ride was met with many laughs from all, with Lachlan McKellar giving us our own concert with his singing, starting very soft and getting progressively louder as the songs went on. We even had the age old argument of which is better Apple or Android… We are still waiting to solve this one.

The performance itself was amazing, and it was fantastic to look around at the students while the performance was on and see how mesmerised some were. Walking out, hearing the conversations around the performance and for some even discussing what they need to do more of for their own performing skills.

The long drive back was much quieter with students napping most of the way.

I want to take the time to thank all the students who came along on the trip, you made the trip extremely enjoyable, and I am looking forward to seeing you grow with your own performing.

Zen Zen Zo members will be returning at the end of this term to continue working with the students on a new work.

‘What is your Story?’ – Creative Writing Workshops

Writing Workshops in drought affected Queensland from Bronwyn Blake, author and editor Supported by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section)

Bron Blake is a published author of thirteen books for young adults and adults, including ‘Gulf Women’, and the recently published ‘Beyond the Outback’.

She is based in rural Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, however for the past five years she has lived in Far North Queensland, at Mount Isa, Townsville and Cairns. Here she met women from the Gulf of Carpentaria, resulting in the development, editing and publication of the current best-selling anthology, ‘Gulf Women, Voices from Remote North West Queensland.’

In addition to writing Bron also gives creative writing workshops focussed on ‘Writing your own Story.’ Bron has run many workshops and was an invited speaker at last year’s Winton Writer’s Festival.

Creative Writing Workshops

Bron is travelling with Royal Flying Doctors Service, to deliver sixteen writing workshops, or one-to-one conversations, with people living in drought affected areas wanting to write their story.

The workshops, ‘What is Your Story?’ are being held in conjunction with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Rural Development, Drought Community Outreach days, in sixteen towns across drought affected Central, South and South-west Qld.

In each town, the workshop will start at 10.30am, at the venue for the Drought Community Outreach day. The workshops will run for an hour. Bron will be available at each venue from 10am to 1pm for further discussion.

The guided sessions provide structure and direction for your writing, but all are fun and very supportive of the writer, whether the person has written before or is a hesitant beginner.

Participants may be interested in starting a family memoir, writing a short story or article, contributing to an anthology, or expanding ideas around their own work. Some participants may choose to write specifically about their drought experience, but this is entirely up to the writer.
