Also, joining our Teacher Aide ranks will be Ms Maya Janke.

Welcome to all of our new staff, I am sure you will enjoy and treasure your time at Charleville State High School, and the Charleville community.

NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS

During week 2 of this term, NAIDOC celebrations will be taking place in Charleville. As usual, Charleville State High School held the official opening ceremony in the harmony garden outside the Trade Training Centre.

This year, the NAIDOC celebrations theme is: Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future.

At the opening ceremony, our guest speaker Mr Sidney Saltner, the Rekindling Youth Program Director for Bangarra, spoke about the importance of the theme and its meaning in the context of what his company does. We also had the students of Charleville State High School who have been working with Bangarra last year and continuing again this year, performing two of their dances at the ceremony. They did a tremendous job and we thank them for their commitment and efforts regarding this.

I would like to also thank Mr Warren Lawton for performing the “Welcome to Country”, to Mrs Donna Enders and Leonie Edwards for organising and assisting with NAIDOC student awards, and to Aunty Rhonda Naggs for assisting in the official cutting of the cake. Also, a very special thank you to our amazing CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell for all of her work in organising this special ceremony.

Charleville State High School students will also be involved in the NAIDOC march on Friday 26 July. Students will be bused to the start of the march in Alfred Street, will march to St Mary’s where the closing ceremony will take place. After participating in the closing ceremony, students will then be bused back to Charleville State High School for the resumption of the normal school day at the start of period 2. More information regarding this will be given to the students to bring home prior to the event.

QATSIF scholarships have now also opened, with Indigenous students in year 10 achieving A-C results in their subjects and attaining above 85% attendance, eligible to apply for these scholarships. Applications close at the start of August. Please contact Ms Vanessa Moller at the school if you require any further information.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE

At the end of last term, most Year 10 students were involved in a week of work experience. The week went extremely well, with students gaining an understanding of working life. Once again, the reports back about the students were extremely positive, with several students being offered opportunities for employment through their efforts.

In week 2 of this term, the Deadly Trackers Regional Careers Expo will also be heading to Charleville State High school. Students in years 10, 11 and 12 will have the opportunity to visit the expo to have a look at the exhibits, gather information and ask questions about a variety of career opportunities. This will occur on Thursday 25 July, when students will come out of their period 1 class to participate in the expo in the school hall.

Also in week 2 this term, a number of Year 10 students have headed off to be involved in the “Beyond Year 10 Camp” where they will travel to Toowoomba, stay on campus at USQ and learn more about the offerings at the University and other educational facilities in Toowoomba.

ZEN ZEN ZO PROGRAM

In week 10 of term 2, 22 students were involved in a week long program with the ZEN ZEN ZO theatre company. The program introduced the students to physical theatre and developed skills and performances with the students over the week.

Students will again work with the company in the last weeks of term 3 and 4, and will be looking to create a performance for the school’s annual awards night at the end of the year.

Thanks must go to the HOPE foundation for procuring the funding to run the program at Charleville State High School, and to the Murweh Shire, who funded T-shirts for the students to wear while involved in the program.

UQ YOUNG ACHIEVERS PROGRAM

Before the holidays, a welcome evening was held for the Year 11 students commencing the UQ Young Achievers program. This program provides support for students as they enter Year 11, through Year 12 and then continuing into University if the student decides to enrol at UQ.

Joining the program this year are Erin Landsburg, Nicole Rivera, Amber Hinz and Matthew Hinz. They join our year 12 students, Ella Bartulis and Lucy Frousheger, who continue in the program this year.

The program is open to all students but there is a means test for being selected in the program, and nominations from the school must also take into account academic results. The nomination process for 2020 has now started, and your student will be notified if the school deems they are a potential nomination for this program. If you have any questions regarding the UQ Young Achievers Program please contact Ms Vanessa Moller for more information.

QCAA NEWS

For parents that have students in year 11 this year, and for parents of students in younger years who will be involved in the new senior schooling system, the QCAA has now released mock external assessments for more than 50 subjects. They are now available for schools to access via the Syllabuses application in the QCAA Portal.

The mock assessments are to support schools to prepare for the introduction of external assessment in 2020. They are intended to play a similar role to the past papers made available in other states. Their purpose is to:

  • allow schools and their communities to understand how syllabus objectives and subject matter will be assessed in external assessments
  • ensure students have an opportunity to see a sample paper prior to sitting an external assessment in 2020
  • give schools the opportunity to administer some, or all, of the sample assessments as a practice test in 2020, after their students have completed the relevant subject matter

The mocks were developed in consultation with our colleagues in curriculum authorities interstate, academics and classroom teachers. Each subject has two assessments published in the QCAA Portal. One is labelled ‘School use’ - only available for schools to access. The other is labelled ‘Public use’ and will be published on the QCAA website in early August 2019 for students and parents to view.

As a school, we will be developing plans and timelines regarding the use of these for the support and preparation of our students in 2020.

Deadly Recruits Camp

On Sunday 23rd June 2018, we had 4 young people travel to Tinnenburra Station for the week long Deadly Recruits Camp. Tinnenburra Station is about an hour and a half south of Cunnamulla and the students were driven down on the CASE Bus by Chappy (Les Penrose), accompanied by Jolene Russell. The Bus rolled out of town on Sunday at 8:30am, to meet the rest of the campers at Cunnamulla State School. The camp is a collaboration between St. George, Cunnamulla and Charleville schools, the HOPE Project, Paroo Council and reflects our community’s genuine desire to provide every opportunity to our young people.

Jolene Russell camped with our students for the week, which concluded on Friday 28th June. These students spent a week camping at Tinnenburra and undertaking various army activities, such as using night vision, orienteering hikes and standing and marching military style. What an amazing adventure!

School Opinion Survey

The School Opinion Surveys are undertaken each year by the Department of Education and Training to obtain opinion information from parents/caregivers, students and school staff. The surveys are designed to help schools identify what they do well and how they can improve. The School Opinion Survey suite is comprised of five individual surveys:

  • Parent/Caregiver Survey
  • Student Survey
  • Student Survey for Special Schools
  • Staff Survey
  • Principal Survey.

Opinions on the school, student learning and student well-being are sought from a parent/caregiver in all families and a sample of students from each state school.

All of the information you provide will be treated confidentially. Randomly selected families will be posted an information and instruction sheet within the next week. This survey can be completed on any computer, tablet or smart phone with internet access. The online survey will be available from Monday 29 July and will close at 5pm Friday 23 August, 2019.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2019, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

Year 10 Work Experience

Nearly all Year 10 students completed Work Experience in Week 11 last term. All reports have been extremely positive and a few of our Year 10’s may even get offers of part-time employment and traineeships. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our local businesses for supporting our students. It was an amazing community effort to get all of our students linked with an employer. A huge thanks must also go to Deb Robinson, who worked tirelessly for 6 months toward making this program a huge success.

Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test

Each year, the QCAA conducts a common statewide test designed for Year 12 students. The test is also available to other eligible candidates.

The QCS Test contributes information for the calculation of Overall Positions (OPs) and Field Positions (FPs), which are used to select students for tertiary entrance.

A student's individual QCS Test result is not used on its own in the calculation of their OP — instead, group results are used as part of the statistical scaling processes. A student's individual result on the QCS Test (from A to E) is reported on the student's Senior Statement or Statement of Results.

The QCS Test does not test particular knowledge of specific Year 12 subjects. It tests the Common Curriculum Elements (CCEs), a set of generic skills identified in the Queensland senior curriculum.

The test assumes that candidates have basic levels of general knowledge and vocabulary and a Year 10 knowledge of mathematical operations.

The QCS Test consists of 4 papers — a Writing Task (of 600 words), a Short Response paper and two Multiple Choice papers. The results achieved for each of the 4 test papers are combined into one grade, ranging from A (the highest grade) to E (the lowest).

Those sitting the test are asked to respond to a variety of stimulus materials, such as prose passages, poetry, graphs, tables, maps, mathematical and scientific data, cartoons and artistic works.

QTAC

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) operates a centralised tertiary application service for:

  • publicly-funded Queensland universities
  • Bond University Medicine
  • TAFE Queensland
  • Australian Maritime College
  • some courses at publicly-funded universities in Northern New South Wales and
  • some private tertiary education providers.

These institutions have complete control in determining their own entry requirements.

QTAC assess applications using these entry requirements and then make offers to successful applicants during the offer rounds.

As well as managing applications for the above institutions, QTAC publish course information for some institutions that accept their own applications directly.

QCE Tracking

Mr Wastie and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Vanessa Moller at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Vanessa Moller on 4656 8888.

Cheers

Vanessa Moller

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

Welcome to Term 3

Junior School

Timetable

Your student will have received a new timetable at the beginning of Term 3. Except for a few teacher changes there are minimal changes in times and subjects for Years 11 and 12. However, Year Seven students have a new timetable structure to accommodate the new electives being offered.

Occasionally, parents contact me asking to change subjects for their student. Electives can only be changed in the first two weeks of the semester. The correct process must be followed.

  1. Official change of subject form is collected from office.
  2. Students must see their current teacher and the Head’s of Department for the subject they wish to change as well as the subject they wish to change into.
  3. Not until the relevant staff members are consulted by the student and/or parents can the subjects be changed.
  4. Contact with the relevant Head of Department is necessary to discuss the best for their child’s education.

NAIDOC March

On Friday 26 July, all students from Charleville State High School will be marching as part of the NAIDOC March. Students will meet at the school in the morning and be transported by bus to and from the venues during the First lesson. Classes will be as normal for Block 2, 3 and 4. A note will be sent out on Tuesday with details.

Reading Program

Reading is the focus for Charleville State High School. We are focusing on students significantly under the regional reading benchmark. We are very successful with our reading program. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved. The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program, please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Sue McDermott at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will be notified.

Junior and Senior Form class

We have created new form classes in both the junior and senior school called FMJ1 and FMS1 (J stands for Junior, S for senior). Students in each of these form classes were carefully considered for extra support that they may require. All students in this form class have been given a letter with details.

Student Services

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

Students in years 7 & 8 are not permitted to have a phone at school

A large number of other students have mobile phones at school. I would like to emphasise that at no time from 8:40 am to 3:00pm does a student require to use a phone at school. If urgent phone calls are needed to be made, students are allowed to call from the office. Rarely does a school subject require the student to use their phone. Phones, in general, are not allowed in a classroom. If students use their phone they will be directed to hand their phone into the office and home will be notified to arrange collection. If a student posts images taken at school on social media the consequences include possible suspension and then that student will be banned for having a phone at school for the rest of the year.

It has been brought to our attention from the Police that there is an increased amount of inappropriate use of data being used and received by young people in Charleville. I would like to bring to the attention of parents/carers of students under the age of sixteen that you are responsible for what is stored on their phone. As a responsible parent/carer you should be checking the phone for what is being received and what is being sent via their phone. Should your child receive inappropriate material via their phone, it must be reported to the police immediately.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Unless supervised, children including students of Charleville State High School are not allowed on the school grounds outside of school hours. Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours and are concerned that these children are not adequately supervised.

PBL Rewards Trip

Term 3, students who reached the criteria for positive behaviour were offered a subsidised trip to Movie World last week. Criteria for students participating include, Starbucks cards, attendance and behaviour.

Bullying

Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim” has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year level Coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form at school. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website (www.stymie.com.au) to report any such issues.

Uniforms

There has been a marked improvement in the standard of uniform in the first week. Thank you to all families who send their students in correct uniform. To ensure that all students can access the correct uniform and keep warm, the P&C have reduced the cost of the school jersey from $45 to $35.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working towards the organising and fundraising for the Year Nine Camp that takes place in Term 4. I am sure that the students will have the most amazing experience.

Until next time,

Narelle Webb
Deputy Principal
Junior Schooling/Student Services

Junior Secondary Update

Welcome back to another busy term! We have lots of exciting things occurring this term.

Year 9 Camp Fundraising

Congratulations to all our Year 9 students and their families who have been busily fundraising to help reduce the cost of the Year 9 Camp to the Sunshine Coast in Term 4. We are now officially half way to meeting our target. This term we will have a few fundraisers occurring:

  1. A scratchie tree – tickets will be sold for $2 each or 3 tickets for $5. The winner will win all the scratchies on the tree, plus the tree.
  2. Sausage Sizzle outside IGA:
    - 17th August
    - 24th August
    - 31st August

Thank you again for all those who have already nominated their help, however we are still after more helpers. Remember, many hands make light work, and all proceeds go to our students to make their camp more affordable.

Junior Certificate of Education

Congratulations to all our junior students on their awesome academic results this semester. Students in Year 8 and Year 9 are all currently working towards achieving their Junior Certificate of Education. Students must complete the following:

At the end of Term 1 there were a number of students who were not on track to gain their JCE, however in Term 2 they put in the hard effort, and are now well on track to attaining their JCE.

Students who did not attain the required six points this semester will complete an interview with Mrs Goodingham or an administration leader in the coming weeks to develop a plan to support students to achieve their JCE. Students need to attain a further six points by the end of Term 4.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Sabrina Goodingham for further information.

Year 6 Transition Day

Charleville State High School is excited to welcome our future Year 7 students to experience a day in the life of a CSHS student in our first transition day for 2019. Students from our feeder schools are invited to participate in a rotation of activities across two days throughout 2019 to assist in their transition to Year 7 in 2020. Our transition days this year will be on Thursday 8th August, and Tuesday 29th October. The Year 6 students will participate in activities based around ITD, Humanities, Science, English, Maths, Japanese, and HPE.

For more information on the day, or to collect an enrolment pack please contact the school on 4656 8888

HPE Update

This term the HPE Department continues to offer our students amazing opportunities. We have many staff and students travelling for sporting events over the coming weeks, and wish them all good luck. This term our volleyball and netball students are lucky enough to travel to the Gold Coast and Toowoomba to compete against a number of other schools – we wish them luck, and know they will do our school proud.

Hockey Queensland

In collaboration with Hockey Queensland, Charleville State High School is welcoming coaches from the Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program to our school on Tuesday 23rd July 2019. We are lucky enough to have two hockey coaches running modified drills and skills, as well as game play for free with students in the Year 8 Sport class, and with students in Year 7 to 9 who signed up, after school. These coaches are eager to introduce another sport into our community, and will return in October to continue their coaching.

Ninja Warrior Visit

In line with NAIDOC week, Charleville State High School, with CWAATSICH will welcome Australian Ninja Warrior repeat grand-finalist, Jack Wilson to deliver an informative and engaging presentation to Year 9 HPE students on the importance of health and fitness.

Jack Wilson is a proud Indigenous Australian from Mount Isa, and since participating in Ninja Warrior has become a great role model for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous teenagers. Jack’s goal is to inspire all children to live a healthy lifestyle and always strive to achieve their goals.

Jack will also be leading activities after school with the Blue Edge program, to inform all our students on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Sabrina Goodingham
HOD – Junior Secondary and HPE

Biology

Last term for year 12 senior Biology the students went to Carnarvon Gorge National Park for a 3 day Biology Camp. This was a mandatory component of their assignment, as they had to collect data on biotic and abiotic factors within the Carnarvon Gorge National Park so they could write a report on ecosystems and their populations and communities. The 6 students who attended had a great time collecting data and exploring the National Park on our 14km hike up the Gorge. The sites were amazing and many great photo opportunities were had. A big thank you to Miss Butler for her help with supervising, cooking and driving and thank you to the students for showing the 4 Be’s and V’s throughout the camp.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Plot News

The Agriculture and Horticulture plot at Charleville State High School had grown some lovely sunflowers and the start of some blooming crops.

Unfortunately the arrival of our new friends, Milky and Cookies & Cream broke their gate so enjoyed eating all of the new crops.

A lot of hard work from all the Agricultural classes these last couple of Terms have helped turn over all of the gardens, removed weeds and given the plants and structures loads of love and elbow grease.

There is new parent permission forms that have been given to the students, can parents please sign these and get them back to class so we can get back into the field.

What could help the plot?

The Ag plot needs loads of love! And with that any donations would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for pots, pvc pipes, pallets and any form of manure. There is a silver bin outside the Agriculture Plot gates if there are any donations or you can contact me at mgbai0@eq.edu.au

During the workshops, Ambre will talk about various aspects of performing, such as dealing with nerves, stage presentation and preparation of music. This will be done in a very fun, constructive and encouraging way, for players of all instruments.

The workshops will be open to all ages and abilities, from beginner students to teachers and community members. Individual, duet, small group, ensemble, band or large group sessions will be available, depending on demand. Sessions will run for approximately 30 minutes (depending on numbers) and will cost $5 per person.
