DIGI ARTS PROJECT

Last week a number of Charleville State High School students were involved in working with the DIGI Arts group who came into town and have created an amazing mural on the Levy wall, either side of the Main Bridge as you head out of town.

The group met with the Indigenous elders of the area to hear their stories, and to learn about their history, and from this they designed the Mural that now sensationally adorns the Levy wall. The art work is filled with the stories of the Bidjara people, their totems and of the history of their land.

Special thanks to Jolene Russell who organised the students to get them to the site each day from school to work on the piece of art. Congratulations to every student who helped out in creating this spectacular art and piece of history, and in doing so have now become part of the history of Charleville. The feedback on the work ethic, commitment, attitude and behaviour of the students was very positive and they should all be very proud of their contribution to this project.

Thank you also to Murweh Shire and HOPE for their contribution and action in getting DIGI arts to Charleville and to CWAATSICH for their support in helping transport students to and from the project each day.

TENNIS STAR

Congratulations to Keenan Burns who last week competed in the Western Rivers Tennis Challenge. He was 1 of 15 students across the state selected to attend the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival to be held in Darwin at the end of August. If he is successful at this carnival then he could have the opportunity to travel to Fiji for the International Tennis Carnival later in the year.

This is an incredible effort by Keenan and a real achievement – congratulations again Keenan.

Certificate II in Rural Operations – Shearing Course

This week, we have 5 of our students heading to Adgingbong for the practical component of their Certificate II in Rural Operations. The students will be participating in the practical elements of running a sheep station, including how to shear sheep. Next year we will have more of our current Year 10 students signing up to this great course.

Deadly Recruits

Deadly Recruits is on once again, held at Tinnenburra Station, south of Cunnamulla. Four of our students, accompanied by one from Quilpie State School and two from Charleville School of Distance Education, headed out at 8am on Sunday morning. It was negative 2 degrees when they departed, so let’s hope they packed their thermal gear and warm blankets. I am sure Uncle Col will keep them warm, running boot camp drills and stoking the campfire.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Wastie and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

At the beginning of Term 3, Mr Wastie and I will be conducting QCE review interviews with any Year 11 student who has failed one (1) or more subjects in Semester 1 this year.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to call Vanessa Moller at the school, on 4656 8888.

Year 10 Work Experience

All Year 10 students have started their work experience this week. A big thank you must go out to all the businesses in Charleville, who have supported our students with providing work placements. The range of businesses is significant and we have all students in a placement.

If there are any questions in regards to the work experience week, please contact Vanessa Moller at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Vanessa Moller at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Vanessa Moller on 4656 8888.

Cheers

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING
AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

WELCOME TO WEEK 10

It is amazing how quickly term 2 has passed. Your junior student would no doubt be looking forward to the two week break.

Junior School

Reporting

Reports cards will be sent in week 10.

How can you help your student use the Semester One report to improve their learning?

As a parent:

  • Carefully read the report and pay initial attention to the Behaviour and Effort grade before focusing on the academic.
  • Praise the positive aspects of the report. If your student is getting A’s and B’s in Behaviour and Effort this indicates that they are working to the best of their ability.
  • If the student has a disappointing report and tries to blame others for their poor result, try to focus on what the student can do to improve in the future.
  • Consider: Homework Club, Speaking to the teacher or the Head of Department.
  • Work collaboratively with your student and the school to focus on improvement. Learning is a team effort: Student / Parents / Teachers / School.
  • Attend the parent/teacher interviews. You will gain valuable information on your child as a learner.
  • Contact the school if you have any concerns

Timetable

Your student will receive a new timetable at the beginning of term 3. Due to staff leaving at the end of Semester, there will be a number of significant changes to the timetable for a number of students. Year Seven students will have a new timetable structure to accommodate the new electives being offered.

Reading Program

In term three we will continue delivering the LLI program at the school. We are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program - otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved. The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Sue McDermott at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will be notified.

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

A large number of students have mobile phones at school. Remember, that students in years 7 and 8 are not allowed to have a phone at school. As a responsible parent/carer you should be checking the phone for what is being received and what is being sent via their phone. Should your child receive inappropriate material via their phone, it should be reported to the police immediately.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Unless supervised, children including students of Charleville State High School are not allowed on the school grounds outside of school hours. Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours and are concerned that these children are not adequately supervised. Staff are rostered on Bus Duty until 3:15 pm every afternoon. It is concerning that even primary aged students are left unsupervised at the bus stop sometimes until well after 3:30 pm. If you are unable to collect your child please make other arrangements for their supervision.

PBL Rewards Trip

Early in Term 3, students who reach the criteria for positive behaviour will be offered a subsidised trip to a Theme Park. Criteria for students participating include, Starbucks cards, attendance and behaviour.

Bullying

Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim” has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year level coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website to report any such issues.

Uniforms

There has been a marked improvement in the standard of uniform in the past week. Thank you to all families who send their students in correct uniform. To ensure that all students can access the correct uniform and keep warm, the P&C have reduced the cost of the school jersey from $45 to $35.

Zen Zen Zo

In week 10, 24 year 7 and 8 students have the wonderful opportunity of participating in the Physical Theatre workshops presented by the Zen Zen Zo instructors. The students are gaining wonderful skills such as confidence, resilience, presentation and performance skills. The students are having a wonderful time and Nicole, the instructor, has been wonderful and full of praise for our students. Thank you to the HOPE foundation for enabling our school to access this wonderful series of workshops.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working hard to fundraise to reduce the cost of the year nine camp. It is very important that every family contribute in some form to the fundraising if you wish your student to benefit from the massive fundraising effort that has been conducted. If you have not been contributing and wish to please contact Mrs Kate Jackson, Mrs Sabrina Goodingham and Ms Jenna Andreatta at the school (4656 8888). I would like to congratulate the junior school team for time and effort that has been put into ensuring that the cost of this wonderful trip has been reduced considerably.

Until next time,

Narelle Webb
