PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

TRIVIA NIGHT FUNDRAISER

Friday night will see the annual Charleville State High School Trivia night take place once again. This yearly event raises money for sporting tours with funds raised this year going to help subsidise the costs for the All Schools volleyball teams travelling to the Gold Coast and the HPV 24 hour challenge to Bundaberg.

The night is always an extremely enjoyable and entertaining evening. If you haven’t already done so, please look to nominate a team of 8 to join in the fun of the event. Drinks and food will be available on the night, and as well as the main event of the trivia evening, there will also be some great raffles and an auction for some signed sporting memorabilia.

For any further information regarding the evening, please contact the school office.

Thank you to Mrs Eileen Lindsay and her team for all of the organisation and preparation for the night.

RACHEL DOWNIE VISIT

This week, the community was visited by Rachel Downie, the developer of the STYMIE anti-bullying notification system that the school uses. Rachel visited the school to hold talks with the students and staff around cyber- bullying and also to present to staff around what are some of the concerning sites that students and your children could possibly be accessing. Her presentation was certainly an eye opener to what negative sites and influences are on the web, potentially only a click away for students.

Rachel will also be holding a presentation for the community at the RSL on Wednesday 12 June at 6pm while she is out here. I hope as many parents as possible take the opportunity to go and see Rachel and to learn from her presentation.

Thank you to the Murweh Shire and Mayor Annie Liston for funding the visit of Rachel Downie to the school and the community this year.

JCE TRACKING INTERVIEWS

JCE tracking interviews will continue again this week. Students in years 8 and 9 who are at risk of not achieving their Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) will be sitting down with a senior staff member over the next weeks to work out ways to maximize their ability to achieve this certificate by the end of Year 9.

Each student involved in these discussions will then bring home a form for parents to have a look at and also have input into. These meetings are designed to help support the student to be successful in their studies and to ensure students remain on track to accrue enough points to achieve their JCE. If you have any questions regarding the JCE or the process, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

P&C MEETING

Wednesday evening at 5.30pm, the June meeting of the Charleville State High School P&C Meeting will be held. P&C Meetings are held on every second Wednesday of the month and are a great opportunity to hear about what is happening in the school, as well as a way parents can get involved and help out at the school.

Currently, there is a small band of very dedicated and supportive parents that come along to the meetings and help the school in areas such as fundraising, uniform shop and tuckshop.

All are certainly welcome and hopefully we will see you at the meeting this week!

Deputy Principal Senior Schooling Report

QCE Review Interviews

A second round of QCE Review Interviews have begun with students in Year 11 and their parents. If a student has failed or is at risk of failing any of their subjects in Semester 1, Year 11, interviews with parents and students are being conducted to ensure there is an action plan in place to ensure the student can gain their QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education).

Students only gain QCE Points for the Units of work that they pass, needing a total of 20 points by the end of Year 12. This makes it essential that students are passing ALL subjects, to ensure they are not putting their QCE in danger.

Missing Set Examinations or Assignment Due Dates

Under the new QCE system, the requirements for examinations and assessments are set by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). Charleville State High School must abide by the requirements of the QCAA in regards to attendance at Examinations and submitting of Assignments.

Students are given an assessment calendar at the beginning of every Semester, to ensure they are well aware of the timing of their assessment. If a student misses an examination, they require a medical certificate and to re-sit the assessment within a reasonable timeframe. If a student knows they will have an upcoming commitment that will interfere with them attending an examination, it is their responsibility to approach their teacher and the Head of Department to attempt to make alternate arrangements, within a reasonable time prior to the appointed date.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students are at the stage of completing their Resume’s and cover letters during their Pastoral Care lessons. These letters will be presented to the workplace where the students will be completing their work experience. Students will be required to make contact with their designated workplace, prior to Week 10. This is so students can be made aware of working hours, dress expectations, behaviour expectations and work place health and safety requirements.

I am in the process of completing the Work Experience Agreements for all our Year 10 students. This Agreement is a legal document that must be signed by the workplace, parents and the school. If this document is not completed by Friday of Week 9, students will not be permitted to go to Work Experience in Week 10.

If there are any questions in regards to the work experience week, please contact Vanessa Moller at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Vanessa Moller at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Vanessa Moller on 4656 8888.

Cheers

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

WELCOME TO WEEK 8

It is amazing how quickly term 2 has passed. I would like to thank Cassandra Kohli for acting in the Deputy Principal position whilst I was on Long Service Leave during May. Cassandra did an excellent job in looking after the students in the junior school.

A large number of opportunities have been offered to the junior school this term. The cross country colour run, fund raising activities for the year nine camp and numerous sporting events are just a few extra curricula activities that give the student the capacity to learn in a non-traditional environment. I would like to take the opportunity to remind parents that participation in the extra curricula activities depend on a number of factors, which include that students are up to date with their school work and assessment, attendance at regular classes exceed 85% and behaviour is of a very high standard. Currently, your junior student would no doubt be under pressure to complete formal assessment.

Assessment

How can you help your student through the school year, learning and assessment?

As a parent:

Know when their assessment due dates are and help plan
Ensure they are getting quality sleep
Ensure they are eating well
Ensure they have some ‘down time’ – some weeks may have more than others
Discuss the four learning objectives they have written for the four lessons they have each day.
Ensure that homework is attempted –e.g. going over class notes and ideas each day
Ensure they are asking staff for help if they are struggling at home
Contact the school if you have any concerns

Reading Program

At Charleville State High school one of our priorities is delivering the LLI program at the school. We are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved. The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Sue McDermott at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will be notified.

Student Services - Behaviour at Charleville SHS

PBL Rewards Trip

Early in Term 3, students who reach the criteria for positive behaviour will be offered a subsidised trip away from the school. Criteria for students participating include, Starbucks cards, attendance and behaviour.

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material. Recently, it has been brought to our attention that the use of social media apps have been used as a form of targeting students. Apps such as “SNAPCHAT” are used with the participants believing that their comments are private and will disappear. However, some individuals are screen-shotting conversations and adjusting the comments to appear that the other participant is “out of line”. This has been reported to the school on many different occasions with students from a wide range of year levels. Once again I urge all parents to know what your student is sending and receiving on their mobile phone. It is not an invasion of privacy. It is good parenting. Until the student is legal age, the parent is responsible for all content on mobile phones.

STYMIE

Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim”, has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year Level Coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website (see the link below) to report any such issues.

http://www.stymie.com.au/

Racist actions and comments will also not be tolerated. Please ensure that you have conversations with your student on treating every human with respect. Young people at times do not realise that their actions and or words may be viewed as offensive. Recently, I was encouraged to hear that students in the junior school made it very clear to a peer when inappropriate language was used towards a friend. I will build on their actions to address the rest of the junior school.

We are very fortunate to have Rachel Downie from Stymie visit us this week. Rachel will be addressing students and staff. She will also be holding a parent information session at the RSL on Wednesday evening. It is essential that all families attend the information session. It is an evolving world with technology changes almost daily. Teenagers are amazing at how they are accepting the advancements. It is essential that parents are well informed of what they need to do as parents in ensuring that their child is safe at all times. This includes that they are safe from the dangers and influences that technology presents.

Immunisation Clinics for Years 7.

Our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Sellin does an excellent job in organising this essential service for our students. I would like to congratulate all of the year seven students on their excellent behaviour whilst the immunisations took place. The Queensland Health workers said they were the best group they had ever immunised. The next round of immunisations for year seven will occur in term 3.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working hard to fund raise to reduce the cost of the year nine camp towards the end of the year. It is very important that every family contribute in some form to the fund raising if you wish your student to benefit from the massive fund raising effort that has been conducted. If you have not been contributing and wish to please contact Mrs Kate Jackson and Ms Jenna Andreatta at the school (4656 8888). I would like to congratulate staff for the amount of time and effort that has been put into ensuring that the cost of this wonderful trip has been reduced considerably. Please ensure that you hand in your permission forms and payment when requested.

Until next time,

Narelle Webb
