PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Naplan tests for Year 7 and 9 students were completed last week. This was the first time that the tests were held online at Charleville State High School. Schools were able to choose this year whether to be online or continue with the paper versions of the test, but in 2020 all schools will be administering the tests online.

Students were encouraged to give the tests their best effort and most students showed great concentration and effort in completing the tests. One of the positive aspects of the online tests is that we should be receiving the results of these tests in a much more timely manner that the paper version tests. Once these have been received they will be passed onto parents as soon as possible.

YEAR 10 SET PLAN INTERVIEWS

This week, Year 10 students have commenced the selection process for their subjects in Year 11 in 2020. Students and parents have been coming into school this week to sit with key staff members to discuss possible subject options for each student to help ensure that each student is selecting an educational path that is going to qualify them for the pathway they may be wishing to follow at the completion of their secondary education studies.

Thank you to all of the parents that have engaged in the process with their students to have these very important discussions

Just a reminder that all Year 10 students will be involved in work experience during the last week of this term (Monday 24 June – Friday 28 June). Ideally, if you can support your student in speaking to businesses regarding this, then Deborah Robinson, our work placement officer, will then co-ordinate with the business to ensure this is locked in for that week. This way, all students are more likely to be involved in a work experience that they are interested in, that may be something they may wish to pursue at the completion of their schooling.

CHARLEVILLE SHOW

Thank you to all of the parents and staff that assisted with the fundraising activities that occurred last weekend at the show. A number of parents and staff helped out at the bar on Friday night, which helped deliver a donation form the show committee to the P&C.

Parents and staff also assisted the Year 9 students in selling raffle tickets for a bike and lucky numbers in a couple of $100 dollar notes. The prize winners of these are:

  • $100 Phillip O’Neil
  • 100 Rosie Pyke
  • Mountain Bike - Anne Cooke was drawn but as she is travelling asked for a redraw, with the winner being Bodhi Allen.

The money raised will go towards offsetting the costs for the Year 9 camp to the Sunshine Coast later in the year.

MURWEH YOUTH COUNCIL

The Murweh Youth Council meeting was held last week. This meeting is held once per term, and allows a fantastic opportunity for representatives from all local schools and community services to meet and discuss issues and events concerning the youth in our community.

Charleville State High School students were well represented by a number of enthusiastic and community minded students, who attended the meeting to voice their opinions on youth issues. The involved students were: Cassie O, Ella Bartulis, Matilda Vaggs, Ashtyn Shearwin, Nikita Chatterton, Nathan Jackson, Indie Everitt, Abby Percival, Ruby Burns, Shiann Shorten, Emmerson Mitchell, Tahlia Stewart.

GIRLS SCIENCE CAMP

Congratulations to Cassis Owczarek, who was recently selected to attend a Year 10 girls Science STEM camp at Columboola on May 7-9. Only a number of students are selected across the state to attend this camp and so it is a great reward for the effort that Cassie constantly puts into her school work.

JCE TRACKING INTERVIEWS

Students in years 8 and 9 who are at risk of not achieving their Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) will be sitting down with a senior staff member over the next weeks to work out ways to maximize their ability to achieve this certificate by the end of Year 9.

Each student involved in these discussions will then bring home a form for parents to have a look at and also have input into. These meetings are designed to help support the student to be successful in their studies and to ensure students remain on track to accrue enough points to achieve their JCE. If you have any questions regarding the JCE or the process, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

COLOUR RUN

On Friday 24 May, the school held our previously postponed colour run afternoon. It was a fantastic afternoon, with all students getting involved in the competition and activities. The event saw students doused in a myriad of colours as they ran or walked around a 2 km course around the school.

There were also a number of other competitive and fun activities held on the afternoon that enabled students to have great afternoon, while also being able to earn points for their respective houses. The students had a great time being involved in tug-of-war and egg and spoon races. It was a great way to finish a Friday of week 5 term 2.

A special thanks to Ashleigh Harding for all of her great work and organisation on the day.

Year 10 SET Plan Interviews

Year 10 SET (Senior Education and Training) Plan Interviews were held on Thursday 23rd May 2019. If parents were unable to attend this meeting, we will be continuing to have meetings, via individual appointment, over the next 2 weeks. Please ring the school to arrange an appointment

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

These meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au on the Tuesday prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Wastie and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QC, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

Year 10 Work Experience

All Year 10 students will be completing a week of Work Experience, to align with their Certificate II in Foundation Skills for Work (CERT II FSK), which they complete during their Pastoral Care classes. This course teaches students basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as the skills required to study certificate courses. The course will also give students points toward their QCE.

Work Experience will occur in the last week of school in Term 2 (Week 10). It would involve sourcing over 50 positions for students for 5 days straight, for 6 hours each day. Working hours/times will be negotiated with the employer. These positions do not have to be in this town. Through negotiations with us, students could go anywhere in QLD. They might have relatives in Brisbane or a family property in Emerald that they could go to for a week of work experience.

Students will be allocated a prospective employer, according to their preferences and then be able to ‘apply’ for this job. They will have to write a letter of introduction and a resume (all done through the Cert II FSK in Pastoral Care), which will be sent to the business. Student will have to present to the business before the work experience for an interview, giving the employer an opportunity to outline their expectations.

If there are any employers who are interested in having a work experience student for a week, from Monday 24th June to Friday 28th June, please contact Deb Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Deb Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Deb Robinson on 4656 8888.

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

HEAD LICE

Over the last week there have been a few cases of head lice discovered amongst some of our students. Department expectations around students with head lice is that we must “ensure students suspected of having head lice or eggs present in their hair are not excluded from class or school. However, if notified by the school, a parent may choose to remove their child from school to administer immediate treatment”.

If students are sent to the office, we will contact parents to inform you of the situation.

STYMIE Presentation

On Wednesday June 12, Rachel Downie the Director of Stymie will be visiting the school to present to the students. Attached is a flyer for the parent information evening held at the RSL at 6pm.

Reconciliation Week 2019

This week students at Charleville State High School will come together in recognition of our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The 2019 theme for Reconciliation Week is ‘Grounded in Truth Walk Together with Courage’. This theme reflects how 80 per cent of Australians believe it is important to undertake formal truth telling processes, according to the 2018 Australian Reconciliation Barometer. Australians are ready to come to terms with our history as a crucial step towards a unified future, in which we understand, value and respect each other. This journey requires all of us to walk together with courage.

Rugby League

During the weekend of the 25th May four Charleville State High School students attended the Outback Rugby League Muster in Longreach. Talis Richards and Jacob O’Toole played in the Southern U14 team, while Laura Driver and Joel Saffey represented their respective U16 Southern teams. All students represented not only their region but their school with pride and demonstrated an outstanding level of respect and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Jacob O’Toole and Joel Saffey who have both been selected to represent the Queensland Outback teams to travel to the Sunshine Coast at the end of June. It was a fantastic weekend for all of those involved and each student should be proud of the efforts that they put in.

Blue Edge

At the start of the term Charleville State High and the local police joined forces to introduce the Blue Edge program to the school. Blue Edge (Educate, Develop, Grow, Empower) is a program of physical training designed to extend a young person’s mind and physical capacity. Over the past few weeks 13 students have been involved in a range of afternoon activities on a Tuesday and Friday after school. Students’ involved have been challenged through a range of fitness activities and games designed to improve team work and resilience. They have also been encouraged to set goals at the start of the program and work hard to achieve these over the next 8 weeks. All students involved have gone above and beyond the expectations that have been set and are continuing to work hard on achieving their goals.

Murweh Youth Council

The Murweh Youth Council is a fantastic initiative by the Murweh Shire Council and the Hope Program to enable young people in our community to have input and gain insight into local government and community events. Students also have the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, participate in decision making processes, network with community services and organisations, and give back to their community. Ten Charleville SHS students proudly and enthusiastically represented our school, with four students elected as the Council's executive committee. Congratulations everyone! If any student has an idea to present to the Youth Council, please see your Year Level Representative or any other member of the Charleville SHS Student Council, who will pass it on to the Youth Council committee to take to the next community meeting.
