PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 1 has flown by and the Easter holidays are upon us. Just a reminder that term 2 will commence on Tuesday 23 April, as Monday 22 April will be a public holiday for Easter Monday.

STAFFING NEWS

Over the last two weeks, we have welcomed new staff to Charleville State High School. In week 9, we welcomed Mrs Lesley Jackson and in week 10, Mr Greg Cannon joined the teaching ranks at Charleville State High School. We wish them all the best for their time in Charleville and at Charleville State High School.

Unfortunately, we will also be saying goodbye to a couple of highly respected teachers who have been at the school for several years.

Ms Fiona Day commenced at Charleville State High School through an internship in August 2015, which then quickly turned into a full time position within the school in November of the same year. Since that time Ms Day has been an integral and important part of the Maths faculty and has done an exceptional job, particularly in working with students in our senior maths subjects.

Ms Day has also been the heart and soul of junior dance within the community, tirelessly working with numerous students through the Charleville dance group.

Ms Day will be taking up a position close to her family home. On behalf of the Charleville Community, we wish you all the best for the future, and thank you for all of your time and effort here at Charleville State High School.

Mrs Crystal Buckle started at the school in July of 2016. In that time, Mrs Buckle has become a leading teacher in the English faculty and has also made a major contribution to the school in the area of Japanese. Mrs Buckle has this year taken on the extra responsibilities of Year Level Co-ordinator, and led the Year 7 camp to Emu Gully.

Mrs Buckle was married last year, and her husband has recently received a job offer in Toowoomba and so she will be moving there. Thank you Mrs Buckle for all of the amazing work you have done at Charleville State High School and for the support and assistance you have given all of your students in your time here.

Mr Duncan Ree will also be leaving us at the end of the term, after receiving a job offer in Sydney. Thank you Mr Ree for coming out to Charleville and assisting this term.

CROSS COUNTRY AND COLOUR RUN

Although we were all certainly happy to see some rain finally arrive in Charleville, this did mean that the school’s Cross Country and Colour Run had to be postponed from Friday 29 March.

The competitive cross country was run on Wednesday 3 April, with all of the students interested in running competitively being involved on the day. It was great to see so many students come out of their period 1 class to be involved and compete for their prospective houses.

A number of students had also been training with a squad for several weeks with Ms Harding, so it was also great to see these students do so well and to have all of their hard work rewarded.

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY AND MARCH

On Wednesday 24 April, in week 1 of term 2, the school will be holding its Anzac day ceremony. This event will take place in the school hall and will commence at 1.50pm and conclude at 3.00pm.

This is always an extremely moving ceremony and one that very respectfully commemorates and remembers the sacrifices made by the ANZACS for the freedom and rights we enjoy today.

All are welcome to attend on the day.

Thursday 25 April is ANZAC day. While this is a public holiday, all students and staff of Charleville State High School are invited to march as one at the Charleville March.

All students and staff involved on the day are asked to assemble outside of Historic House on Alfred Street at 9.40am. From here the students and staff will march down to the cenotaph in Wills Street, where the official ceremony will occur.

Our school captains will also be representing the school on the day, and will be involved in the ceremony.

There will also be a community Dawn Service that all are also invited to attend. This will commence at 5.15am, again at the cenotaph in the town hall grounds on Wills street.

BLUE EDGE PROGRAM

In term 2, students will be offered the opportunity to be involved in the “Blue Edge” program. This program is designed as a support/fitness program that incorporates an 8 week training program and healthy food.

The program is run by the local police but with support of teachers of the school. It will be run either before school or after school twice a week for the 8 weeks.

The program is fully funded and so is free of charge to all participants. All of the students involved will receive a training shirt, and all of those students who complete the program will receive a pair of new training shoes.

More information is attached with this newsletter, and more information will be given to the students at the start of term 2.

SCHOOL JUMPERS

A reminder to all parents and students as the colder weather hits that the school uniform expectations are that school jumpers are to be worn. There are a number of options available through the P&C uniform shop including jackets, spray jackets and jumpers. The P&C has also made a special order of black school hoodies for students to purchase. For the start of term 2, please ensure that your child has one of these options to wear to school in the colder months ahead.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES

Tuesday 23 April – Day 1 term 2.
Wednesday 24 April – School ANZAC day Ceremony – school hall 2.00pm
Thursday 25 April – Charleville ANZAC ceremonies: Dawn Service 5.15am, March 9.40am

Have a safe holiday and great Easter everyone. We will see you all back here for the start of term 2 on Tuesday 23 April.

Deputy Principal Senior Schooling Report

Interim Reports – end of Term 1

All year levels (except Year 11), will be reported on at the end of this term. This report is an Interim Report, designed to give parents and students an idea of how they are tracking with each of their subjects, allowing for adjustments to goal setting and key focusses for the Semester. These report cards will be posted on Friday 5th April.

Year 11 Reporting 2019

Because of changes to the Senior Schooling system in 2019, Year 11 students will only be reported on twice this year, at the end of each unit of work. Due to this, SET Plan Review meetings were conducted during Week 5 of this term, to ensure student were on the right pathway and to give both students and parents feedback about progress. If your student missed one of these meetings, please contact Vanessa Moller on 4656 8888, to arrange a time for an interview.

Parents of Year 11 students are still very welcome to make a Parent/Teacher interview time with Individual teachers in Term 2.

Parent Teacher Interviews – Term 2

We have scheduled a Parent/Teacher interviews afternoon for Thursday 2nd May 2019. The interviews will run for ten minute sessions, from 3:30pm until 6pm, by appointment.

The school uses an online booking system (www.sobs.com.au). Parents need to follow the URL below:

https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/parent.php?schoolid=70203

You will be able to make a booking between Monday 8th April 2019 to Wednesday 1st May 2019. If you cannot access the internet, please feel free to call the school office on 4656 8888, and we will make a booking on your behalf.

We encourage your child to come with you to the interview. A Letter with all this information will come home with Report Cards.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Hunter and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

Year 10 Work Experience

Beginning in 2018, all Year 10 students will be completing a week of Work Experience, to align with their Certificate II in Foundation Skills for Work (CERT II FSK), which they complete during their Pastoral Care classes. This course teaches students basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as the skills required to study certificate courses. The course will also give students points toward their QCE.

Work Experience will occur in the last week of school in Term 2 (Week 10). It involves sourcing over 50 positions for students for 5 days straight, for 6 hours each day. Working hours/times will be negotiated with the employer. These positions do not have to be in this town. Through negotiations with us, students could go anywhere in QLD. They might have relatives in Brisbane or a family property in Emerald that they could go to for a week of work experience.

Students will be allocated a prospective employer or are able to source their own Work Experience. They will have to write a letter of introduction and a resume (all done through the Cert II FSK in Pastoral Care), which will be sent to the business. Student will have to present to the business before the work experience for an interview, giving the employer an opportunity to outline their expectations.

If there are any employers who are interested in having a work experience student for a week, from Monday 24th June to Friday 28th June, please contact Deborah Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Deborah Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Deborah Robinson on 4656 8888.

Cheers

WELCOME TO WEEK 10

Timetable for Term 2, 2019

There will be significant changes to the timetable for term 2. Students will be given a new timetable on the first day, Tuesday 23 April, 2019.

NAPLAN ONLINE

This year the students in years seven and nine will be taking their NAPLAN tests online. A practice day was held on Monday 1st April to ensure the procedure of logging on etcis familiar with the students. The dates for the NAPLAN tests are May 14 to May 24. The tests take a different format and students will follow different paths depending on the results from the previous test. It will be a lot less stressful and should be more engaging for students.

Reading Program

If your child is part of the LLI program you will receive a letter from the school. At this stage we are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved.

The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Sue McDermott at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for all students.

Another level of reading intervention is a commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will have been notified.

PBL

Currently Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) staff are planning explicit lessons/activities to address the RESPECT aspect of the Learning Expectations at Charleville State High School in term 2.

MOBILE PHONES AND INTERNET USE

Last week it was brought to our attention that students were sharing alarming videos. One such video was very graphic and showed someone killing himself. Unfortunately, it was shown to me before I could prevent it being displayed, as I would imagine may happen to young people. As an adult, it was very confronting and disturbing for me to view this image. I am very concerned that young people have been subjected to such images. I urge all parents and carers to know what is on the phones of young people and what is being shared by social media. It is up to the adults to ensure that young people are protected from viewing such images. It is also important that empathy is taught at home and for young people not be de sensitized to such graphic images.

We have had a very positive and supportive response from the community regarding the changes to the Charleville SHS mobile phone policy. Year seven and eight students are not allowed to have a phone at school. Years 9 to 12 students are allowed to have a phone in their possession but not use it in school hours. A Teacher may give permission for a student to use their phone within the teachers’ supervision. Strictly, no social media is allowed during school hours.

The inappropriate use of mobile phones is occasionally reported to the school. As the mobile phone is used outside of school hours, we recommend that you contact the police if you have concerns.

As responsible adults, please carefully consider your young persons’ best interest and the amount of time they use digital media.

I urge all parents to know what your student has stored on their phone/electronic devices, what they receive and what they send.

IMMUNISATION

Tackle Flu program will be conducted in term 2. We are currently working with the HOPE foundation and other agencies to investigate other needs in regards to immunizations and our students. We will update you when we have more news.

STUDENTS WITH MEDICAL NEEDS

A reminder to parents/carers to notify the school about your child’s health. Students with ongoing medical needs should have an ACTION PLAN (eg asthma and anaphylaxis) supplied to the school.

ZEN ZEN ZO AND THE HOPE FOUNDATION

Thanks to the HOPE foundation, we are offering to all students a series of workshops throughout the year with the physical theatre company Zen Zen Zo. The first workshop is this week, week 10 of term 1. Eighteen (18) students have applied and will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity offered to students at Charleville SHS.

We are also offering to the community a free workshop. Details will be posted on the Charleville SHS Facebook page.

PEER SKILLS

In week ten we are conducting a Peer Skills workshop for a number of our year ten students. We are very fortunate to have trained personnel available that will assist us in delivering this worthwhile initiative.

Until next time,

Industrial Technology and Design

What a fantastic start to the year in the ITD Department. Students have been busily working on a variety of projects with some very impressive results. Grade 10 students have been constructing a Chess Table out of pine. They have had to read and interpret plans. Some of the students have learnt the importance of measuring twice and cutting once. They have been learning when where and why we use this type of joint. Students have designed the legs of their table. Some of the students have learnt how to use a timber lathe, a variety of hand tools, Biscuit joiners and a variety of sanders.

Engineering students have been learning different techniques on how to Oxy Acetylene Weld and Cut. They have been producing a metal dice. Other students have begun learning how to Manual Metal Arc Welding (Stick Welding) Students are completing currently completing weld test that are the same as an apprentice Boiler maker would need to do at TAFE. They are learning how the change in amperage affects the weld along different materials and the angles of the stick.

This is the first year that we are running Industrial Technology Skills (ITS). This is an applied subject, which aligns with the new SATE. Students need to construct a Dartboard Cabinet that is to a specific set of plans. They have spent weeks perfecting a dovetail joint before they started on their Dart Boards. They will continue this into next term. Our new motto for our seniors is “Nothing but Perfection”

This term students are learning about Financial Administration and are exploring financial decisions that businesses make. Students have been learning about the significance of a budget and justifying choices they have been making. Students have also been learning about the significance of high verbal and non-verbal skills and the importance of expanding these skills if wanting to venture into the business industry as a career pathway. As the term progressed students continued to grow their knowledge and understanding of Financial Administration and have grown an understanding of the importance of financial decisions in a business.

Performing Arts Festival

This year the performing arts festival will be from the 29th - 31st August. If you have any questions or inquiries, please contact charlevilleperformingarts@gmail.com

Further information will follow in regards to entry soon.

Shave for a Cure

Thank you very much to those who donated and participated in last week’s Colour for a Cure, raising funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

This was the Student Council’s first fundraiser for the year, which was a learning exercise for all.

Together, we raised $64.30 - this is enough money to help grow blood cancer cells in a laboratory to enable vital research into the cause and treatment of blood cancer.

Some valuable and thoughtful conversations occurred between support staff and students here in C Block both in the days prior to the event, and also on the day. I am pleased to report that students were very mature during the colouring process, and were calm and respectful during both breaks despite the large number of students flowing through C Block (clientele were mostly Junior students).

Thank you for your support.
