PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we complete week 8 of the school year, I can report that the attendance of most of our students has been excellent. Each week most of our form classes have been reaching our target of 92% attendance, and in many cases exceeding this. It is really important that the students continue these high levels of attendance right through to the end of the term.

Assessment continues right through week 9 for most subjects and then week 10 will see students in most classes commence work for term 2 units of work. This is especially important for the Year 10, 11 and 12 students, who have limited time to get through the required work within their work programs. Thanks again to all parents who encourage and support their child in getting to school every day.

STAFFING NEWS

Last week we welcomed a new staff member to the team at Charleville State High School. Mrs Frances Mutch has joined Charleville State High School as our new Guidance Officer for the remainder of 2019. We welcome Mrs Mutch to the school and hope that she enjoys her time here in Charleville.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE

Friday 15 March was the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. To mark the day, the school held a special full school assembly where Senior Constable Leanne Day presented to the students a very thorough presentation about what bullying is, the consequences of bullying and the legal ramifications of bullying and violence for people of all ages.

The students were also involved in activities during the week to mark this day including hair colouring and the wearing of the orange “Bullying No Way” ribbons during the week. The students were handed wristbands with the words “Bullying No Way – Take a stand Together” and were also handed wallet cards with information about tips for dealing with Bullying and support services.

Thank you to Mrs Katie McLeod, our school’s Youth Support Co-ordinator for her work in organising the activities to highlight this very serious social concern.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS

As we head towards Easter, hopefully we will start to see temperatures starting to drop in Charleville. Now is the time to start preparing for winter in regards to school uniforms and look to equip students with one of the several school jumper/jacket options.

The P&C has stock of school jumpers and jackets, and they are currently organising a special order of black school hoodies. To purchase one of these please place your order and payment of $35 with the ladies in the school office. There are a number of winter uniform options available, so that everyone will be able to find one that suits. Please look to have an option organised for your student before the cold weather hits.

SPORTS VISITS

This week, the school was very lucky to have two Queensland sporting legends visit the school: Vicki Wilson for Netball, and Geoff Dymock for cricket. Students were offered the opportunity to participate in training and skills sessions with these sporting icons. It was great to see a number of our students take up the opportunity to work with these legends and to learn more about these popular sports.

SHAVE FOR A CURE

Mr Brad Lines, our enigmatic sports co-ordinator, this week was shaved, clipped and waxed in the name of the Leukaemia Foundation’s Shave for a cure. Mr Lines had been preparing for this event since Christmas, growing an impressive beard in readiness for the shave.

At the completion of the Charleville races on Saturday, Mr Lines was gleefully shaved by his daughter and wife, who certainly seemed to enjoy the experience more than Mr Lines did.

Mr Lines raised over $2000 for the foundation- an impressive effort and certainly a fantastic achievement.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Friday 29 March – Beyond Broncos Visit – 9am
Friday 29 March – School cross country and colour run – 1pm to 3pm

Take care,

Learning

How can you help your student at home?

As adults and parents, we want to ensure our children arrive at the ‘right conclusion’. It is tempting to explain everything rather than allowing our children to explore their own thoughts about the topic and putting their ‘Thinking Cap’ on. The simplest ways in which parents can assist in developing a child’s Higher Order Thinking skills, and encourage them to put on their ‘Thinking Cap’, can be as simple as encouraging our children to think about ‘why’, ‘how’ and ‘therefore this means that…..’. For many parents who already do this it is important to understand just how vital it really is to have your student put on their ‘Thinking Cap’ regularly.

At Charleville State High School, we often direct the following questions to students.

What are you learning?
How are you doing?
How do you know?
How can you improve?
Where do you go for help?

Parents could use the same questions to start conversations with their students when enquiring on their school progress.

Assessment

How can you help your student through the school year, learning and assessment?

As a parent:

Know when their assessment due dates are and help plan;
Ensure they are getting quality sleep;
Ensure they are eating well;
Ensure they have some ‘down time’;
Discuss the four learning objectives they have written for the four lessons they have each day;
Ensure that regular homework/study is attempted –e.g. going over class notes and ideas each day;
Ensure they are asking staff for help if they are struggling at home and
Contact the school if you have any concerns.

Who can support your student at CSHS?

There are many people who can support your student. Below is a list of some options should students not know who to see for help.

Class Teachers

Know who your student’s teachers are. Have a list of emails to be able to contact staff or ring the school to have a chat or organise a meeting. For curriculum matters contact the Head of Departments.

Junior Certificate of Education

Students in years 8 and 9 need to be responsible for their own learning and be aware of how they need to earn the points to gain their Junior Certificate of Education(JCE). Mrs Goodingham has given a number of excellent information sessions regarding the JCE. Brochures are available in the front office if students or parents wish to know more information.

School Uniforms

It is wonderful to see almost every student in school uniform for the start of the school year. We are currently taking orders for the black hoodies that are very popular with the students. Payment of $35 must be made with the order before the end of term 1. This is just a one off opportunity to order the hoodies. School jerseys and jackets are available year round at the uniform shop, which is open every Tuesday morning.

Attendance

Currently the attendance of most students in the junior school is excellent. However, there are a few individuals that need support in ensuring that they attend school on a regular basis. At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s actual attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level. These letters will be sent out before the end of term.

Reading Program

If your child is part of the LLI program you will receive a letter from the school in the near future. At this stage we are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved.

The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Sue McDermott at the school. There is a waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for all students who want to improve.

Another level of reading intervention is a commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will have been notified.

Anti-bullying Day – Say No to Bullying

On Friday 15 March 2019, Australian schools stood united in their communities to celebrate the ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).

The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2019, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS.

The National Day is a positive day of action, bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence.

Let's Take a Stand Together.

The day celebrated Australia's cultural diversity and is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone, themes that link directly to the anti-bullying focus of the National Day.

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved. Online bullying (sometimes referred to as cyberbullying) is bullying carried out through the internet or mobile devices. Not all online issues are bullying, you can learn more about cybersafety issues, including online bullying.

I would like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website to report any such issues.

http://www.stymie.com.au/

Currently Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) staff are planning explicit lessons/activities to address the RESPECT aspect of the Learning Expectations at Charleville State High School in term 2.

MOBILE PHONES

We have a very positive and supportive response from the community regarding the changes to the Charleville SHS mobile phone policy. Year seven and eight students are not allowed to have a phone at school. Years 9 to 12 students are allowed to have a phone in their possession but not use it in school hours. A Teacher may give permission for a student to use their phone within the teachers’ supervision. Strictly no social media is allowed during school hours.

The inappropriate use of mobile phones is occasionally reported to the school. As the mobile phone is used outside of school hours we recommend that you contact the police if you have concerns.

As responsible adults, please carefully consider your young persons’ best interest and the amount of time they use digital media.

I urge all parents to know what your student has stored on their phone/electronic devices, what they receive and what they send. There are some very useful apps that can be used to assist parents in monitoring their child’s data.

Internet Use

At Charleville State High School students are to use the school’s internet for educational needs only. Games, even at break times is not allowed. I also encourage parents and carers to actively supervise their child’s internet use at home. The excessive use of online gaming is not supporting students to become Learners who are resourceful, flexible, creative, mindful and interculturally competent global citizens. There is numerous research on the amount of screen time a young person should have before it affects their welling. Parents need to monitor carefully their teenager especially when they are in contact with others online. Phones and ipads etc should not be in the bedroom prior to sleeping. It is evident that a number of students have disturbed sleep patterns and consequently affects their ability to concentrate at school.

International Women’s Week Women’s Week

Last week saw the celebration of International Women’s Week where we recognised and celebrated the achievements of Queensland women and girls. This allows us to celebrate women’s achievements as well as acknowledging that supporting and enabling women to take advantage of opportunities to succeed is good for everyone in Queensland.

Immunisation

Immunisation Clinics for Years 7. Most year seven students received their first immunisations on 14th February. If your child was absent that day then they will be given their immunisations at a later date. Our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Frazer did an excellent job in organising this essential service for our students. I would like to congratulate all of the year seven students on their behaviour whilst the immunisations took place. The Queensland Health workers said they were one of the best groups they had ever immunised.

Immunisation for Meningococcal (Year Ten students)

On February 14th, the majority of year ten students received their immunisations for meningococcal.

STUDENTS WITH MEDICAL NEEDS

A reminder to parents/carers to notify the school about your child’s health. Students with ongoing medical needs should have an ACTION PLAN (eg asthma and anaphylaxis) supplied to the school. Students should not carry medication in their bags unless the school is aware of it and it is for immediate action. Eg: Epipen, Ventolin.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Thanks to Katie McLeod who has commenced the Student Council in a very positive manner.

Two of the initiatives that have been addressed by student council is The World’s Greatest Shave on March 14 and a National Day of action against bullying on March 15th.

PEER SKILLS

In week ten we are conducting a Peer Skills workshop for a number of our year ten students. We are very fortunate to have trained personnel available that will assist us in delivering this worthwhile initiative. The Murweh Shire council has generously given us the use of the racecourse complex to conduct the Peer Skills workshops.

ZEN ZEN ZO

The professional physical theatre group, Zen Zen Zo are coming to Charleville SHS for a series of workshops throughout the year. This is thanks to the HOPE foundation who made this wonderful opportunity for our students. Every student is welcome to apply to take advantage of this experience. It is designed to increase confidence and introduce the concept of physical theatre. Spaces are still available for the first workshop in week 10 of term 1.

Until next time,

International Women’s Day Art Workshop

On Friday 8th March, International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Town Hall, with various stalls and exhibits, supporting women in our community. As part of the celebrations, Tackling Regional Adversity through Integrated Care (TRAIC) sponsored Samantha Meurant to conduct art workshops. Our Year 10-12 female students we lucky enough to be invited along to one of these workshops. The young women had a wonderful morning, learning artistic techniques and celebrating International Women’s Day. Everyone came away with an individually painted canvas, to commemorate the day.

Tackle Flu – Free Flu Immunisations

Any students and community members who identify as A&TSI and are 15 years and over can attend the Charleville State High School on the 13th May 2019 (13/05/19) from 12pm-1pm to receive their free flu shot and deadly shirt.

QCS Test Community Representatives

To maintain the integrity, security and conduct of the QCS Test, the QCAA appoints community members to observe and report on its administration. They do not supervise students or assist in the administration of the test.

The QCAA invites community members to apply for the positions of Chief Community Representatives (CCR) and/or Community Representatives (CR). On behalf of the QCAA, the chief supervisor of each test centre receives applications and nominates an appropriate person for each available position at that test centre.

If you are interested in becoming a CCR and/or a CR, please email Paul Hunter on phunt9@eq.edu.au or call Vanessa Moller on 4656 8888.

Next Step Survey

Next Step is a state wide post-school destination survey of all students who completed Year 12 last year in Queensland.

Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to review and plan their services for students, and school system personnel to evaluate education policies as they affect the transition from school to further study and employment.

This year’s survey of 2018 Year 12 completers will commence in March 2019 and the school seeks your support in once again promoting participation in the survey. If you have a child that completed Year 12 last year, they can follow the following links to find out more about the survey.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Hunter and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

Year 10 Work Experience

Beginning in 2018, all Year 10 students will be completing a week of Work Experience, to align with their Certificate II in Foundation Skills for Work (CERT II FSK), which they complete during their Pastoral Care classes. This course teaches students basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as the skills required to study certificate courses. The course will also give students points toward their QCE.

Work Experience will occur in the last week of school in Term 2 (Week 11). It would involve sourcing over 50 positions for students for 5 days straight, for 6 hours each day. Working hours/times will be negotiated with the employer. These positions do not have to be in this town. Through negotiations with us, students could go anywhere in QLD. They might have relatives in Brisbane or a family property in Emerald that they could go to for a week of work experience.

Students will be allocated a prospective employer, according to their preferences and then be able to ‘apply’ for this job. They will have to write a letter of introduction and a resume (all done through the Cert II FSK in Pastoral Care), which will be sent to the business. Student will have to present to the business before the work experience for an interview, giving the employer an opportunity to outline their expectations.

If there are any employers who are interested in having a work experience student for a week, from Monday 24th June to Friday 28th June, please contact Deborah Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Deborah Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Deborah Robinson on 4656 8888.

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

Languages

G’day, Budabai duru, Konnichi wa

The United Nations declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019) to raise awareness of the crucial role languages play in people’s daily lives. No matter what language people speak, as human beings, it is important for us all to be able to greet others with a simple, ‘Hello’.

It has been incredibly exciting to see the enthusiasm for languages this term at Charleville State High School, with students from across the school using simple greetings such as ‘OHAYOU GOZAIMASU’ (good morning), ‘KONNICHI WA’ (hello) and ‘SAYOUNARA’ (goodbye).

Students in our Year 7 and 8 Japanese class have been learning the three forms of Japanese script (hiragana, katakana and kanji) and drawing the characters in the air with some ‘Hiragana Tai Chi’ moves.

The Year 8s have learnt how to type in Japanese script and to express likes and dislikes in Japanese. It was surprising to hear how many students actually dislike chocolate!

Students have been learning about culture, customs and daily life in Japan. They were amazed by Japan’s Shibuya crossing, the busiest crossing in the world, which can have as many people crossing at one time as almost the entire population of Charleville.

The key focus this term has been on Japanese greetings, the concept of respect being communicated through language choices (eg ‘good morning’ instead of ‘morning’) and the different forms of bowing in Japan. As their first assessment task this year, students have produced some impressive posters to explain these concepts and to display their Japanese writing skills. We will be continuing to build on their knowledge of self-introductions throughout the rest of the term.

Languages Teacher

ASDAN Program

Boxing Program:

This term during the ASDAN program students have been participating in the “One Punch can Kill” unit. This unit focuses on redirecting emotions, participation in various team sports and general health & well-being. As part of the program, students have had the opportunity to go to the boxing gym and participate with local trainer Michael Wex. Below are some photos of some of the boys really getting in and having a crack.

Well done Lads!
