PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

STAFFING NEWS

Since our last newsletter, we have welcomed three new staff members to our school. Mr Daniel Clunn joined us at the start of week 4 and will be on contract with us for several weeks working in a number of capacities within the school. Mr Duncan Ree commenced at the school on Monday 4 March and will also be filling a number of contracts and roles within the school for the remainder of the semester.

On Friday we also said goodbye to Mrs Ange Vetter, our school based liaison officer, who is taking extended leave for the rest of the year. Filling her position for the rest of the year will be Ms Deborah Robinson.

Welcome to all of these new staff members to the Charleville State High School community.

STATE PRINCIPALS CONFERENCE

Much of my week 5 was spent in Brisbane at the State Principals conference at the Brisbane Convention centre. At the conference, I was privileged to hear presentations from a number of leading educational experts and researchers, as well as the Premier, the Education Minister, our new Director General, Mr Tony Cook and our new Assistant Director General, Mr Peter Kelly.

One of the upcoming challenges that schools and our society faces in the years to come is the changing face of employment opportunities and the workforce. It was indicated that by the year 2030, the artificial intelligence field and automation of many jobs having a huge bearing on the job opportunities for our students. It was indicated that over 50% of current jobs on offer will be affected, altered or even will have disappeared due to digital technology. Digital literacy is deemed to be essential for students if they have to maximize their opportunities as we head into the 2020s and beyond. There are definitely exciting and challenging times ahead!

YEAR 7 CAMP

On my way back from the conference, I stopped in to see the Year 7s who were well into their ANZAC inspired camp at Emu Gully near Toowoomba. It was great to hear first-hand from the staff at the camp just how much the students had improved and grown in regards to their teamwork, communication skills and confidence in relation to the challenges they faced at the camp.

This confidence is something we would like to see each of these students bring back with them from the camp and to use in relation to their education and learning at school. Resilience is one of the school values that students use when they are finding the work hard so that they continue to try and do so until they achieve the task at hand.

The other major outcome of the camp is that it assists the students from all of our feeder primary schools to come together, to create new friendships and to see themselves as students and classmates of Charleville State High School.

BEYOND BRONCOS

Thank you to all of the community members who came along to the Beyond Broncos Launch last week. It was great to see so many there to support the students in this program and hear from former Broncos player Scot Prince as he launched the program for the year.

YEAR 11 SETPLAN INTERVIEWS

This week, all year 11 students have been involved in SET PLAN review meetings. These meetings are essential in helping to ensure that student’s educational plans, including subject selections, are appropriate for each student and will maximize each student’s success as they begin their two year journey in the new QCE/SATE senior educational system that has commenced in year 11 this year.

Thank you to all of the parents who came along and engaged in this process. By working together, we will maximize the chances of successful outcomes for every student in our senior years.

SPORTING TRIALS

This Friday, Charleville State High School will host district sporting trials on the school grounds for U15 and 16-18 Touch football and Netball. Students need to have brought their permission form to Mr Lines before these trials and have met the expectations of the school in regards to behaviour and attendance to have permission to attend the trials. Good luck to all students who will be striving to achieve selection at the trials on Friday.

A reminder that the high School will have a stall at the upcoming “Welcome to Charleville” event. Please keep an eye out for the stall as there will be raffles and items on sale to assist in raising money for school camps and other events this year.

Take care,
Mr Matt Samson
Principal

Next step Survey

Next Step is a state wide post-school destination survey of all students who completed Year 12 last year in Queensland.

Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to review and plan their services for students, and school system personnel to evaluate education policies as they affect the transition from school to further study and employment.

This year’s survey of 2018 Year 12 completers will commence in March 2019 and the school seeks your support in once again promoting participation in the survey. If you have a child that completed Year 12 last year, they can follow the following links to find out more about the survey.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking – SET Plan Review Interviews

Mr Hunter and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). To accomplish this for our current Year 11 students, we held SET Plan Review interviews with parents and students. If you were unable to attend last week, please phone to school on 4656 8888, and speak with me to arrange a time for your interview.

Year 10 Work Experience

Beginning in 2018, all Year 10 students will be completing a week of Work Experience, to align with their Certificate II in Foundation Skills for Work (CERT II FSK), which they complete during their Pastoral Care classes. This course teaches students basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as the skills required to study certificate courses. The course will also give students points toward their QCE.

Work Experience will occur in the last week of school in Term 2 (Week 10). It would involve sourcing over 50 positions for students for 5 days straight, for 6 hours each day. Working hours/times will be negotiated with the employer. These positions do not have to be in this town. Through negotiations with us, students could go anywhere in QLD. They might have relatives in Brisbane or a family property in Emerald that they could go to for a week of work experience.

Students will be allocated a prospective employer, according to their preferences and then be able to ‘apply’ for this job. They will have to write a letter of introduction and a resume (all done through the Cert II FSK in Pastoral Care), which will be sent to the business. Student will have to present to the business before the work experience for an interview, giving the employer an opportunity to outline their expectations.

If there are any employers who are interested in having a work experience student for a week, from Monday 24th June to Friday 28th June, please contact Deborah Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Deborah Robinson at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Deborah Robinson on 4656 8888.

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING

AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

WELCOME TO WEEK 6

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

As we enter the second half of Term 1 we are finding that our students are beginning to enter the assessment stage of the term. A Junior School assessment calendar has been given to all students in years 7 to 9. The Calendar will also be published on the Schools Facebook page. I encourage all parents to access a copy of this calendar and assist their students in planning and organizing the extra time they may need to study or complete assignments. The Homework club is a great opportunity for students to receive extra help from their teachers. The students merely need to ask their teacher the day before if they would help them at Homework Club. If the classroom teacher cannot be available then there is always another staff member only too willing to assist.

Year Seven Camp

The year seven students and staff had the most wonderful time at Emu Gully. From the photographs with children covered in mud I would have expected quite a lot of washing was done over the weekend. Camps are a wonderful opportunity for students to form bonds, show leadership qualities and learn how to be resourceful, flexible, creative, mindful and inter-culturally competent global citizens.

STUDENTS WITH MEDICAL NEEDS

A reminder to parents/carers to notify the school about your child’s health. Students with ongoing medical needs should have an ACTION PLAN (eg: asthma and anaphylaxis) supplied to the school.

SWD STUDENTS

SWD students will have received contact from their 2019 case manager. If you have not received contact, please notify the school. Individualised Learning Plans are currently being updated and Parents who have children placed on an ICP will need to come to the school for a formal interview.

TRADIES’ CLUB

This is another of Katie McLeod’s great initiatives to help engage students of our school in something positive. Once a week after school, students have the opportunity to gain valuable skills that they will have for life.

PEER SKILLS

In week ten we are hoping to conduct a Peer Skills workshop for a number of our students. We are very fortunate to have trained personnel available that will assist us in delivering this worthwhile initiative. Students will be notified soon of the opportunity.

MOBILE PHONES and SOCIAL MEDIA

We have had a very positive and supportive response from the community regarding the changes to the Charleville SHS mobile phone policy. Year seven and eight students are not allowed to have a phone at school. Years 9 to 12 students are allowed to have a phone in their possession but not use it in school hours. Almost all students have been very responsible and have not used their phones in school hours. Those students who use their phone irresponsibly are required to hand the phone into the office. A parent will be contacted and must make arrangements to collect the phone. There have been the occasional situation where a student needs to use their phone (contact employer etc). They ask permission from a teacher and within sight of the teacher uses the phone. The same situation applies on school events off campus. A Teacher may give permission for a student to use their phone within the teacher’s supervision (eg: music on the bus). Strictly no social media is allowed.

In the past, the inappropriate use of a mobile phones was often reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. Please carefully consider your young persons’ best interest and the amount of time they use digital media. I urge all parents to know what your student has stored on their phone, what they receive and what they send.

Until next time,
Narelle Webb
Deputy Principal

We have explored the weird and wonderful aspects of Medieval Europe, extending students’ knowledge and developing their historical skills.
