PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

By the time this newsletter is sent to our families, week 8 will be just about completed and we will have only 1 week to go of what has been a very busy and rewarding year. Friday 30 November will be the last day of term for our Year 10 and 11 students, while our year 7, 8 and 9 students will finish on Friday 7 December.

During this final week of school, students will be involved in an alternate timetable, due to all assessment and results being completed in preparation for sending out final report cards before the holidays. Throughout this week, students will be involved in interesting and engaging curriculum based learning activities that will enhance the knowledge of the students in preparation for their 2019 education.

On Tuesday 4 December, the year 9 students will take part in the inaugural JCE ceremony, where those students that have achieved a Junior Certificate of Education will be awarded this certificate. This is the first time this event has taken place within Charleville State High School, and has been created to acknowledge the outstanding work that so many year 9 students have put in over this year, as well as their transition from junior secondary to their senior secondary schooling years.

With the new changes to Year 11 next year with the introduction of the SATE/QCE system, achieving in every semester becomes an important lesson for students, as does getting off to an excellent start in year 10. Without being able to do this, students will find it more difficult than in the past to achieve their Senior QCE in the future.

Congratulations to all year 9 students who have accomplished this achievement this year – this puts you in a very good position to be successful in year 10 and then your senior studies.

Friday 16 November saw the year 12s final day at Charleville State High School. A graduation ceremony was held to celebrate this milestone and significant event in these young students lives, and as usual, it was a wonderful and emotional event.

The event not only signifies the end of 12 years of schooling, but also signifies that the students have achieved educational outcomes that will give them opportunities in the future.

Of the 33 students that graduated on Friday, every one of them is tracking to receive a QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education).

Seventeen of the year 12s sat the QCS test and so will shortly be receiving an OP score, which will enable them to accept offers for positions at various tertiary institutions around the country.

Nineteen students achieved a Certificate 2 or 3 qualifications through a completed school based traineeship, making them immediately employable in a number of fields. Of these, four have already commenced full time apprenticeships for next year, and I thank the businesses who have taken these graduates on for the start of their new careers.

These qualifications will assist each of our graduating students in achieving a positive, successful and secure future in the years to come. There are no guarantees in life, but successfully completing Year 12, statistically gives each of these students a massive advantage and improved chance of a prosperous and successful life.

On behalf of the whole Charleville State High School community, I wish this special group of students all the best for the future. I hope that your lives are everything you hope and wish them to be. Remember that “The Sky is the Limit” for every single one of you - take care and have a safe and amazing future!

On Wednesday 21 November, we held the final parent information night for the incoming year 7 students for 2019. Thank you to Mrs Sabrina Goodingham for her organisation and delivery of the information on the night. If any parents have any further questions or concerns regarding next year, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Goodingham, or Mrs Narelle Webb at the school.

On Friday 23 November, our future school student leaders for 2019 participated in the community white ribbon march against domestic violence. The students joined community members in a march from the council chambers to the town hall, where they heard some disturbing information about the prevalence of domestic violence within Australia. The community event certainly highlighted to the students how terrible this problem is. The students then passed on what they had learnt to the other students of the school at the full school assembly on Tuesday.

Every year at this time unfortunately, we say good-bye to some of our hard working and valuable staff. This year is no different with the following staff vacating their positions at Charleville State High School in 2019:

Mrs Dawn Collier, Ms Nancy McKinnon, Mr Stewart Sloan, Mr Daniel Baeck will be leaving at the end of the year. Mrs Nadonna Schouten will also be heading off to the bright lights of Toowoomba at the end of 2018. Mrs Ange Stirton will also be taking maternity leave next year, while Mrs Liz Moore will also be taking some extended leave from the start of the year.

Our amazing Work education officer, Ange Vetter will be taking a year’s leave to pursue other interests, so early next year; we will be advertising this as an acting position for 12 months within the school. If anyone is interested in this position, please keep an eye out for this to be advertised early in 2019.

We wish all of these staff members the very best in their endeavours for 2019 and beyond. On behalf of the Charleville State High School and greater community, thank you all for your contribution to the students of Charleville.

As this is the final newsletter of the year, I would like to thank everyone for your support of the school, its staff and its students, over the course of 2018. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year, and I look forward immensely to working with all of you again in 2019.

First day of school next year is Tuesday 29 January, so until then,

Take care,
Matt Samson

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

Year seven students are not allowed to have phones at school. In 2019, both year 7 and year 8 students will not be allowed to have mobile phones at school. Older students are permitted to have their phones in their possession, however cannot use them during school hours. The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone at school, then the student is required to hand their phone to the office, a parent will be contacted to arrange collection. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material at all times.

Immunization

Most students have now received all relevant immunizations. If you want to query you child’s immunization status please contact our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Frazer.

Diagnostic Testing(PAT R and PAT M)

At Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan. All students in Year 7,8, 9 and 10 are given a diagnostic Reading Comprehension test in term 4. We use this valuable data along with Naplan, Academic and teachers’ anecdotal notes to plan for the future to ensure that students reach their potential.

Students are also given a diagnostic (PAT M) test for mathematics in term 4. We will examine this data to assist us in planning for 2019.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

We have a well established Student Support Centre. C block houses our CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC, Mrs Katie McLeod, our SBYHN, Miss Jen Frazer, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as our Beyond Broncos staff member, Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own. It is appreciated if you were able to assist in the form of donations. As fruit is offered in the third break, Donations of fruit would be a great benefit.

Bullying at Charleville SHS

There are occasions where a student feels uncomfortable to report an issue. This is when we encourage the use of the Stymie website. Students are able to anonymously report concerns. This report is taken seriously and is acted upon immediately.

Use of technology outside of school

There is numerous research on the amount of screen time a young person should have before it affects their welling. Parents need to monitor carefully their teenager especially when they are in contact with others online. Phones and ipads etc should not be in the bedroom prior to sleeping. It is evident that a number of students have disturbed sleep patterns and consequently affects their ability to concentrate at school.

Who can support your student at CSHS? There are many people who can help your student if they need it. Below is a list of some options should students not know who to see for help

Bangarra Rekindling Semester 2.

A massive thanks to those students who have continued to rehearse and perform the rekindling dances that were learnt throughout semester one. The children have since performed at NAIDOC celebrations at the school ceremonies and other events around town during this week. They had the opportunity to travel to Brisbane in term 3 and watch the Bangarra Dance Theatre perform their 2018 work ‘Dark Emu’. This was an amazing experience that even allowed the students to watch a closed rehearsal the night before with a meet and greet after (I do not know who “fangirled” more, myself or the year 12 girls). This trip was huge, with a three-day turn around, but I am so proud of every one of the students who came. They were very respectful and loved every minute of it. These students did not stop there. They once again picked up rehearsals after a long break and amazed me with their ability to remember the dances. Which they performed at the awards night. This was one of the proudest moments. To watch these six girls walk out onto that stage confident, and to watch them enjoy this performance, was fantastic! I am so proud not only of these girls, but the other students who participated in this program throughout the year. They made it a very enjoyable experience. I am looking forward to working with these students and many more next year, creating more works that we will be able to perform next year.

Miss Dolman.
