PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The days and weeks continue to fly by and the year 12s now find themselves in their final week of school- ever! Final assessments have now been completed and teachers have been busy working out final results and negotiating with subject panels to ensure that all of our students receive the best results they deserve. QCE points have been tallied, and we commence the Year 12s last week confident that every student will receive their Queensland Certificate of Education at the end of their 12 years of schooling.

Last week saw us celebrate the achievements of so many of our hard working and committed students at our annual awards evening. The evening was held in the school hall, which with improved audio and visual systems, and a very comfortable temperature, was an ideal venue to celebrate and acknowledge the great achievements of our students this year.

Students were awarded an array of sporting, academic, community and cultural awards, with students across all year levels achieving excellent outcomes. Several of our Year 12 students were also the very lucky recipients of generous bursaries from the RSL and Lions clubs of Charleville, to assist them with their further studies after school.

Thanks also to our special guest speaker, Yolande Brown, dancer and choreographer from the Bangarra dance company, who travelled from Sydney to deliver a very interactive and positive speech for all of our students, highlighting resilience and commitment as the keys to success.

Our students did an amazing job throughout the evening, with dancers and musicians all on display, as well as many of our students doing a great job of reading and presenting on the night.

Thank you again to all of our very generous sponsors of our awards on the evening; as always, our community is so supportive of our students and their achievements. A special thanks to Mr Sebastian Kohli for all of his work in organising and preparing the evening.

Saturday night saw a celebration of another type – the Year 12 formal!

The students looked wonderful as they proceeded down the red carpet, alighting from their variety of rides including muscle cars, horse and carriages, horses, motorbikes, mobility scooters, and even boats! The students all appeared to have a wonderful night, with plenty of smiles, dancing, memories and a few tears shared on the night.

Special thanks must go to our year level coordinators, Lauren Butler and Nancy McKinnon for their fantastic organisation and preparation for the night, to Leith Brennan for her catering, Ms Fiona Day for her dance choreography, and to the year 11 students for their assistance in waiting tables on the night.

Thank you also to all the staff, parents and community members who came along either to watch the students arrive or to attend the dinner on the night. I am sure the students appreciated the support and attention given to them on their very special night.

This week will see the Year 12 students acknowledged one final time at the Year 12 graduation on Friday morning. This ceremony not only signifies that the students have made it to the end of 12 years of schooling, but that they have all graduated with either a QCIA ( Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement) or a QCE ( Queensland Certificate of Education). To achieve this means that they had to pass their subjects and complete courses to achieve these certificates.

On behalf of the whole Charleville State High School community, I wish this special group of students all the best for the future. I hope that your lives are everything you hope and wish them to be. Remember that “The Sky is the Limit” for every single one of you - take care and have a safe and amazing future!

The Final Countdown

Our Year 12 students are in the final weeks of their secondary schooling. We are impressing upon our Year 12’s that they must maintain focus through to the end, even though this can be challenging, when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Preparations are well underway for Graduation, so students are reminded to listen to notices for important announcements. If parents have any queries or concerns, please contact the school.

If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QTAC

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) operates a centralised tertiary application service for:

  • publicly-funded Queensland universities
  • Bond University Medicine
  • TAFE Queensland
  • Australian Maritime College
  • some courses at publicly-funded universities in Northern New South Wales
  • some private tertiary education providers.

These institutions have complete control in determining their own entry requirements.

QTAC assess applications using these entry requirements and then make offers to successful applicants during the offer rounds.

As well as managing applications for the above institutions, QTAC publish course information for some institutions that accept their own applications directly.

Below are a number of forms for students to complete, for the Educational Access Scheme. This scheme is to ensure that students who have had any issues that have affected their education acknowledged and reflected in the OP score that they receive. Students have been working on these applications in Pastoral Care.

QCE Tracking

Mr Kohli and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Ange Vetter on 4656 8888.

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

Students in years 7, 8 and 9 received letters regarding their elective subjects for 2019 last term. I am pleased to advise that the majority of students have received their first preferences. I have contacted the students who were unable to study their preferred elective due to lack of numbers in the subject. If students did not return a form, they have been placed in electives.

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

Year seven students are not allowed to have phones at school. Older students are permitted to have their phones in their possession, however cannot use them during school hours. The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone at school, then the student is required to hand their phone to the office, a parent will be contacted to arrange collection. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material at all times.

Immunization

Most students have now received all relevant immunizations. If you want to query you child’s immunization status please contact our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Frazer.

Diagnostic Testing(PAT R and PAT M)

At Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan. All students in Year 7,8, 9 and 10 are given a diagnostic Reading Comprehension test in term 4. We use this valuable data along with Naplan, Academic and teachers’ anecdotal notes to plan for the future to ensure that students reach their potential.

Students are also given a diagnostic (PAT M) test for mathematics in term 4. We will examine this data to assist us in planning for 2019.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

We have a well established Student Support Centre. C block houses our CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC, Mrs Katie McLeod, our SBYHN, Miss Jen Frazer, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as our Beyond Broncos staff member, Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own. It is appreciated if you were able to assist in the form of donations. As fruit is offered in the third break, Donations of fruit would be a great benefit.

Bullying at Charleville SHS

If you have been in the school in recent weeks, you may have noticed a large number of teachers wearing shirts displaying, “Say Something”. This coordinated effort is to encourage students to report if they are being harmed or know of someone being harmed. Bullying is a term that has been used widely in the media. There numerous definitions of Bullying.

When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once.
That is rude.

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once.
That is mean.

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it – even when you tell them to stop or show them that you are upset.
That is bullying.

There are occasions where a student feels uncomfortable to report an issue. This is when we encourage the use of the Stymie website. Students are able to anonymously report concerns. This report is taken seriously and is acted upon immediately.

Use of technology outside of school

There is numerous research on the amount of screen time a young person should have before it affects their wellbeing. Parents need to monitor carefully their teenager especially when they are in contact with others online. Phones and ipads etc should not be in the bedroom prior to sleeping. It is evident that a number of students have disturbed sleep patterns and consequently affects their ability to concentrate at school.

Who can support your student at CSHS?

There are many people who can help your student if they need it. Below is a list of some options should students not know who to see for help

Year 7 Maths

This year our year sevens have been doing very well in Maths. Over this year we have challenged them with a range of new topics, from geometry, probability, statistics to algebra, and our students have been responding well with enthusiasm. Maths is not an easy subject, it requires a lot of practice to be proficient, therefore please encourage your student to spend time completing their homework (at least 30 minutes per day) as that is the only way to keep up with the progress.

Here are some pictures showcasing some of the interesting activities in this class.

Pic 1: Students are collecting results after they have designed their own surveys.

Pic 2 & 3: Students are learning how to choose the best value products online.

Pic 3: Students are working in groups to tackle a complex problem solving task.
