PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As you receive this newsletter, almost 4 weeks of the final term of 2018 will have passed. The weeks are flying by, particularly for our Year 12 students, who will find themselves with only 2 weeks of their schooling life left after this week.

Week 5 will see the Year 12s involved in their very last school exam block, and we wish them all the best for their final assessment pieces.

Week 5 will also see the school celebrating the successes of our incredible students at our 2018 Awards evening, which will be held at the school on Thursday 8 November. Students have been urged to check noticeboards to see whether they will be receiving an award this year and invites have been sent out to all families of reward recipients. I look forward to seeing as many of you at the awards evening as possible in support of your successful students.

It will be a wonderful evening, highlighting the wonderful achievements of so many of our incredibly hard working and committed students.

We will also shortly be holding the Year 12 Formal, held at the racecourse on Saturday 10 November. Again, this is a wonderful celebration of 12 years of schooling for our tremendous year 12 cohort. I know this is something that all of the students are very much looking forward to.

Our Year 9 students all returned from their camp to Noosa North Shore safe and sound. They certainly had an adventure! Sleeping in small two person tents, the students and teachers had to battle the elements for the first couple of days, with solid rain persisting for much of the time. Amid stories of collapsing tents, soaked equipment and clothing, and torrid conditions, the students did an amazing job and were certainly a credit to themselves and their school.

The teachers reported that despite the cruel conditions, the students showed amazing resilience, leadership, problem solving abilities, and a strong capacity to look out for and support each other. We are all very proud of them and the way they dealt with everything thrown at them on the camp, and I am sure they have all come away with some amazing memories from an unforgettable camping experience.

Thank you again to Mrs Kate Jackson, Ms Ashleigh Harding and Mr Paul Hunter for taking these students away and enabling the students to be involved in such an incredible adventure.

Last week, our potential school leaders for 2019, gave their leadership speeches to the students and staff. I have heard leadership speeches in high schools over many years now, and I can adamantly say that I have never heard a collective of speeches of the quality that the school community listened to at our assembly last week.

Every student displayed incredible maturity, sincerity and a passion for wanting to help lead the student’s in 2019. They were all incredible.

This week, as another part of the selection process, the students will be sitting down in front of a panel to further discuss their reasons for wanting to lead the school, their aspirations for the school and how they will lead the school in 2019.

All candidates have certainly made the selection process difficult, and all of them have shown they have what it takes to be a school leader.

Decisions regarding the leadership positions will be made this week, with the official announcement of the positions being made on the night of the awards evening in week 5.

Our Year 7 students for 2019 participated in their final transition day on Tuesday of week 2, and again enjoyed the high school experience immensely. All are very excited about the prospect of beginning their high school journey at Charleville State High School in 2019.

All students have been issued enrolment packs, can I remind parents that this information must be returned and an enrolment interview must occur before a student is officially enrolled in the school. If you have not already booked an interview time, please ensure that you ring the school office to do so.

Take care,
Matt Samson

The Final Countdown

Our Year 12 students are in the final weeks of their secondary schooling. We are impressing upon our Year 12’s that they must maintain focus through to the end, even though this can be challenging, when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Preparations are well underway for the Awards Night, Formal and Graduation, so students are reminded to listen to notices for important announcements. If parents have any queries or concerns, please contact the school.

It is looking to be a magnificent night, when all of our fine young people celebrate the end of their secondary schooling.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QTAC

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) operates a centralised tertiary application service for:

  • publicly-funded Queensland universities
  • Bond University Medicine
  • TAFE Queensland
  • Australian Maritime College
  • some courses at publicly-funded universities in Northern New South Wales
  • some private tertiary education providers.

These institutions have complete control in determining their own entry requirements.

QTAC assess applications using these entry requirements and then make offers to successful applicants during the offer rounds.

As well as managing applications for the above institutions, QTAC publish course information for some institutions that accept their own applications directly.

Below are a number of forms for students to complete, for the Educational Access Scheme. This scheme is to ensure that students who have had any issues that have affected their education acknowledged and reflected in the OP score that they receive. Students have been working on these applications in Pastoral Care.

QCE Tracking

Mr Kohli and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Ange Vetter on 4656 8888.

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

Parents and the community are welcome to attend and invitations will be sent to families. This ceremony will acknowledge the hard work the year nine students have done over the three years in the junior school and their movement into the senior school.

Year Nine Camp

It was a very successful camp for the year nine students to Noosa North Shore. I thank Mrs Kate Jackson for the excellent organization of the trip well supervised by Kate, Paul Hunter and Ashleigh Harding. Mrs Goodingham and Mr Baeck also worked tirelessly to ensure the camp was subsidized by fund raising efforts. The staff involved in the camp were full of praise of our resilient students.

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

Immunization

Year Seven students received their second round of HPV immunizations last week. The year seven students handled the situation maturely and responsibly. They are a wonderful cohort. We are very fortunate to have an excellent working relationship with Queensland Health to ensure our students receive the best possible care available.

Reading

Reading at Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan/focus.

As parents, you can help your students in many aspects:

  1. Model reading to them. Read interesting articles to them and take the time to discuss and value each other’s opinions.
  2. Encourage students regardless of age to read for at least 20 minutes every day.

Attendance

Attendance at Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

Student Support Centre we are very excited to have our Student Support Centre well established at Charleville SHS. C block houses our CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC, Mrs Katie McLeod, our SBYHN, Mrs Jen Frazer, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as the appointed Beyond Broncos staff member, Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own. It is appreciated if you were able to assist in the form of donations. As fruit is offered in the third break Donations of fruit would be a great benefit.

Resilience

Resilience one of Charleville State High School’s Values is RESILIENCE. I found a You Tube clip that demonstrates the use of resilience when a student is being verbally bullied. I urge you as parents to investigate Brooks Gibbs also.

The you tube clip I found interesting is

STEM Girl Power!

Alumni Conference

The STEM Girl Power Camp provides an opportunity for girls from across Queensland to travel to Brisbane to experience STEM, access role models and inspire them to become STEM Ambassadors in their region. In 2017, Jennie Le was selected as one of only 50 girls in the state to be involved.

Through her involvement, she took on the role of STEM Girl Power Ambassador, and collaborated using iSee to develop initiatives that promote STEM in their local communities.

The Ambassadors implemented initiatives during National Science Week in August 2018, including Robotics workshops, city tours demonstrating real-life applications of STEM and presentations from STEM experts.

Last week the STEM Girl Power Alumni event was held in to celebrate the success of the STEM Ambassadors in their regions and welcome them as Alumni in the STEM Girl Power Community, where they can continue to connect and inspire girls in STEM.

The Alumni event empowered the Ambassadors to be lifelong leaders in STEM, by showcasing world-class STEM experts in their regions, developing their leadership skills and creating a legacy for future STEM Girl Power Camp attendees.

Automation in the Workplace

Automation in the workplace has been the focus for Year 7 Humanities students this term. They have been examining automation and its advantages and disadvantages in various industries including agriculture, manufacturing, hospitality, retail and the healthcare industry. From concepts such as AI algorithms being used in shopping apps so they are more responsive to customer shopping patterns to SwagBots that can monitor and work with livestock, students are finding that automation is finding its way into many aspects of the workplace. Assessment, which starts this week, will involve students choosing an industry to concentrate on and making a presentation to the class.

Laser Skirmish

In week 6 our students will have the opportunity to participate in laser skirmish for the end of year PBL rewards trip. We have run this activity for the last two years out at Croxdale and students have loved it. To be eligible for this trip student need to have 85% attendance to school, a good behaviour record and a considerable amount of Starbucks. This rewards trip is a chance for a lot of students to be involved as 60-80 student can be involved in the day. Being in attendance last year it is great to see so many students get involved and work in teams to overcome the challenges presented. If your student is one of the lucky students chosen to attend permission notes will be sent out in week 5 with the full details.
