PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Last week, I travelled to Roma to be involved in the Regional Principals conference on the Monday and then was joined by Vanessa Moller, our Senior Schooling Deputy, at a Regional SATE forum on Tuesday. The forum involved schools sharing their journeys so far in regards to preparing for the new Senior system that will be commencing next year, and then planning the next steps of this journey. As I listened to other schools discuss their states of play, it confirmed to me how much work our staff have done to prepare and plan for these changes and that we are very well set to meet the demands that these changes will have on both teachers and students in 2019 and beyond.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Just after our last newsletter, a group of touring musicians known as “The Culture Train” visited the school. The group was a combination of musicians from a variety of cultural backgrounds who firstly worked with our instrumental students in a number of music workshops and then performed for the whole school. After a few technical issues, the students enjoyed a few songs from the variety of cultures of the group. The group also performed a concert out at the Cosmos centre that night, which many of our students and families also attended.

Thank you to Mr Stewart Sloan, our amazing instrumental music teacher for his efforts in organising and getting this group out to Charleville for our students. Also thank you to Mr Paul Hunter, for assisting with the technical side of the show and ensuring that the show did go on.

Our group of girls who have danced several times this year after their experiences working with the Bangarra dances, had the incredible experience of travelling to Brisbane to see the world renowned Bangarra dance company perform live. The students travelled down to Brisbane, saw the final rehearsal, then a special matinee performance of the new production of the company. They then also had the opportunity to meet the cast off stage, speak to them and learn more about the company and their dances.

This was an amazing opportunity for the students, and a fitting reward for all of the hard work they had put into learning and performing their dances this year. Thank you to CWAATCICH and Hope foundation for their support of the students and for their sponsorship of this wonderful reward.

Last Friday, we were visited by the Beyond Broncos team who came out to work with a group of our indigenous female students engaged in this program. After working with the girls and rewarding many of them for their efforts regarding behaviour and their results, the team hung around to play a huge game of touch football on the oval with any interested students. Any student who came down had the chance to play with or against Bronco legend Scot Prince and as usual, he was very gracious of his time speaking to the students after the game and signing items for any who asked.

A number of our local police also joined us and participated in the game with the students. It was a great experience for the students involved and a very enjoyable way for students to spend a lunch break on a Friday.

Over the last couple of weeks, students have also been able to be involved in a number of interesting activities during their breaks during firstly Science week, and then Humanities week. Staff did an amazing job of organising and running exciting and engaging activities throughout these weeks, giving students an insight into the types of aspects study in these areas can open up for them in the future.

TRANSITION DAY

The local year 6 students have now visited Charleville State High School and participated in their first day of High School. The day was filled with information - meeting teachers, learning expectations and involving themselves in a number of interesting and engaging learning experiences. The students will return later in the year for a second day of transition activities and information, so that they are well prepared for their transition to high school in 2019.

All students were given enrolment packages on the day to take home and the enrolment process has now commenced. If you require any further information regarding this, please call the school to speak to either Mrs Narelle Webb, Junior Secondary Deputy or Mrs Sabrina Goodingham, Junior Secondary Head of Department.

P&C NEWS

The P&C is also looking for a new Treasurer, if anybody has the time and ability to help, please ring the school to offer your assistance.

Athletics Carnival

An absolute highlight of the term so far was our Athletics Carnival. I was so impressed and inspired by our senior students. There behaviour, attitude and support of staff and students on the day was a great reflection of our values at Charleville State High School. Below are some of the fabulous costumes our seniors wore on the day.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test

A big thank you to the P&C, parent volunteers and Year 11 students who helped out at the QCS Breakfast on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This breakfast allows students to come together and have a relaxing and hearty breakfast before heading into the QCS.

QTAC

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) operates a centralised tertiary application service for:

  • publicly-funded Queensland universities
  • Bond University Medicine
  • TAFE Queensland
  • Australian Maritime College
  • some courses at publicly-funded universities in Northern New South Wales
  • some private tertiary education providers.

These institutions have complete control in determining their own entry requirements.

QTAC assess applications using these entry requirements and then make offers to successful applicants during the offer rounds.

As well as managing applications for the above institutions, QTAC publish course information for some institutions that accept their own applications directly.

Below are a number of forms for students to complete, for the Educational Access Scheme. This scheme is to ensure that students who have had any issues that have affected their education acknowledged and reflected in the OP score that they receive. Students have been working on these applications in Pastoral Care.

QCE Tracking

Mr Kohli and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Ange Vetter on 4656 8888.

Cheers

Year 6 Transition: Day 1

On the 23rd of August, Charleville State High School welcomed 49 nervous, polite and energetic Year 6 students from Charleville State School, St Mary’s School, and Augathella State School to embark on their very first day as a high school student. The students were separated into three different groups to complete their activities for the day - ITD, Science, Pastoral Care, English and Maths, depending on which group you were in.

Students made wooden boxes, developed amazing superhero stories, and even completed a chemical explosion! From the smiles on their faces, it definitely seemed that everyone had fun and even made some new friends. At the end of the day the consensus was that everyone wanted to return – not next year, but the next day!

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for our second transition day on Tuesday 23rd October, in Term 4 where students will all complete activities in Humanities and HPE, and will finish their rotations in Maths, Science and ITD.

To ensure that your student starts Year 7, 2019 off with the same enthusiasm please return your enrolment packs as soon as possible so we can organise their enrolment interview.

Remember to follow our Facebook page to keep up to date with our transition program.

We look forward to seeing you all in Term 4!

Head of Department – Junior Secondary

Industrial Technology and Design.

The days of the old skool ‘man arts’, where students were given a standard drawing and told to go knock it up in the workshop are over. Like the name suggests, Industrial Technology and Design is just that…

The curriculum is now moving with the times and creating opportunities for students to be inventive and on the cutting edge of technology; they are now being asked to draft, design and enterprise new initiatives.

This term alone the year nine students started on a brand new project and are creating a folio around the ‘Passive Design’ of a residential dwelling. The project includes designing a modern house, for an extremely hot or cold environment, that is completely self-sufficient. The students will need to take into consideration notions like the thermal mass and insulation qualities of building products, orientating the house in a way to maximise or minimise sun exposure, architecture that increases air-flow and electricity generation without the use of fossil fuels.

If time permits the student will also be given the opportunity to draw and design plans for their house using the latest industry recognised software – Auto CAD – Revit.

Similarly, the year eights next term will also have the opportunity to showcase their skills in designing and new technologies. The students will be designing a portable device holder, using another Auto CAD program – ‘Inventor’. Students will be researching, designing and drawing a modern device holder on the computers, with the possibility (later in the term) of 3D printing this project.

Brass Woodwind and Percussion Program Update

Term 3 has been as busy as always for the Brass, Woodwind and Percussion students.

Week 6 saw our students participate in workshops with the Culture Train music company. This band of musician encompassed genres and nationalities from all over the globe. Musicians hailing from Ireland to Iran and the Torres Strait Islands to Vietnam. The students worked with artists specific to their instruments and practiced skills such as improvisation and composition. The entire school was then treated to a performance which demonstrated many unique instruments and a diverse range of vocal styles.

This term will also see our Concert Band playing in the Bilby Festival Parade this Friday. Be sure to keep an eye out for our band in green. The term will then wrap up with the annual Charleville Performing Arts Festival. The festival will see our Concert Band and Rock Band compete as well as a number of solo and duet performers representing Charleville State High School. These performances will be held at the Charleville racecourse Complex from Friday September 14 to Saturday September 15. We hope to see you all there.

Thank you to everybody for their continued support of the CSHS music program.

Stewart Sloan (Brass, Woodwind and Percussion instructor).

What is Plagiarism?

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, plagiarism is defined as:

  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
  • to use (another's production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source

Essentially plagiarism is not only cheating, but is an act of fraud.

Examples of Plagiarism

The following acts are considered acts of plagiarism:

  • submitting someone else's work as your own
  • copying words or ideas from someone else’s work without giving them credit
  • failing to put a direct quote in quotation marks
  • falsifying the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • having the majority of your work composed from copying numerous phrases and words from someone else’s work, with or without source reference.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

It is very easy to avoid plagiarism, firstly by acknowledging where you got your information from with direct quotes in your text. Secondly, by recording the full details of the sources used in your work in a reference list. By simply referencing the sources used in work, you are publically acknowledging someone else’s work, and identifying that you have borrowed someone’s research and information to help write and inform your own work.

New Plagiarism Detection Program

To reduce the opportunity of plagiarism at Charleville State High School, we have recently adopted a new plagiarism detection program. Using this program, students work will be scanned electronically through the program, and any text that has been copied from another source, including other students, textbooks or websites will be highlighted.

If your child is suspected of plagiarising their assessment, under our assessment policy they will receive an N for the assessment piece, as we cannot mark their own work against criteria. You, and your student, will be notified of any issues in regards to their assessment after it has been processed through our plagiarism detection program.
