PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Last week, a group of our student leaders were given the opportunity of a lifetime to meet the current Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Malcom Turnbull MP. The students met Mr Turnbull on the steps of the council chambers, where he chatted with the students, took selfies with them, and was very generous of his time. The students were excellent ambassadors for the school, polite, respectful, and a little overawed by the meeting, but did a great job.

Last week, another of our amazing students, Ms Brea Frousheger, travelled to Brisbane to be a part of the inaugural Ministerial Student Advisory council. The council was organised by the education minister, the Hon. Grace Grace MP, so that she could gain student perspectives regarding bullying in schools. Brea was one of only a handful of students selected across the state to represent all of the students in the state at this event. This is an incredible achievement and experience for Brea and impressed the minister so much that she is invited to a follow up meeting in September.

In other great news for our students, on Friday a number of our music students travelled to Roma for the fanfare competition and came home with two silver medals, with both the CSHS string ensemble and the CSHS concert band coming home with a silver medal in their divisions on the day. This is an outstanding achievement and credit to the hard work put in by these students, but also with these students by our exceptional instrumental teachers Stewart Sloan and Vincent Kwan!

One of our outstanding Year 10 students, Harry Springall, was nominated for, and will receive the very prestigious Baron Pierre de Coubertin Award. To receive this award, a nominee must participate actively in the school's physical education program with a consistently positive attitude and must have represented the school in a sport, along with a number of other criteria.

Award recipients are invited to attend an Academy Day, which provides the opportunity for students to meet Olympians, workshop Olympic issues and learn about of the International Olympic Movement and includes an official Awards Ceremony. Harry will attend this ceremony, on Saturday 14 July over the school holidays.

SENIOR BLOCK EXAMS

Last week, the year 10, 11 and 12 students completed their very important block exams for the end of Semester 1. For the first time during these exams, year 11 and 12 students were able to stay at home to study when not in exams. The feedback from both the students and parents from the recent P&C meeting was that this was really appreciated by the students, with students using this “extra” time to study for upcoming exams and compete required assignments.

The trial was important for the support of students and to assist them to achieve the best results they can, but also to start to prepare the students and the school structures for the external exams that will be introduced into the Queensland state school system in the 2019.

Thank you to Mr Kohli, our hard working Senior Schooling HOD for all of his preparation, planning and organisation for these exams.

STAFFING NEWS

Last week Mrs Kristyanna Creedon left to commence maternity leave in anticipation of her and her husband Pete’s first child. Replacing her at Charleville State High School for the rest of the year is Ms Ashleigh Harding, who will be teaching in the areas of HPE and maths.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances, Mr Luke Heppleston who joined us this term will not be able to continue at the school after this term, but we thank him for his contribution over the term at Charleville State High School. Ms Christina Roos will also be leaving us at the end of the term to take on new challenges- we also thank her for her commitment to her students while she has been at the school.

Replacing these two teachers will be Ms Emma Cameron and Ms Amy Roughan, who will commence on the first day of term, Monday 16 July.

As for myself, I will be taking two weeks long service leave as of Friday 15 June. In my absence, Mrs Narelle Webb will be acting Principal and will do a great job in running the school over the final two weeks of term 2.

RESONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN FOR STUDENTS

The Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students for Charleville State High School has been going through the process of review by staff to ensure that it as clearly as possible reflects the processes and philosophies regarding behaviour at Charleville State High School. The revised plan has been endorsed by the P&C and has been uploaded to the school website for parents and guardians to access.

Next step Survey

Next Step is a state wide post-school destination survey of all students who completed Year 12 last year in Queensland.

Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to review and plan their services for students, and school system personnel to evaluate education policies as they affect the transition from school to further study and employment.

This year’s survey of 2017 Year 12 completers will commence in March 2018 and the school seeks your support in once again promoting participation in the survey. If you have a child that completed Year 12 last year, they can follow the following links to find out more about the survey.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Kohli and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). If any students need to change subjects to help them toward getting their QCE, they need to see me. We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students are at the stage of completing their Resume’s and cover letters during their Pastoral Care lessons. These letters will be presented to the workplace the students will be completing their work experience at. Students will be required to make contact with their designated workplace, prior to Week 11. This is so students can be made aware of working hours, dress expectations, behaviour expectations and work place health and safety requirements.

Ange Vetter is in the process of completing the Work Experience Agreements for all our Year 10 students. This Agreement is a legal document that must be signed by the workplace, parents and the school. If this document is not completed by Friday of Week 10, students will not be permitted to go to Work Experience in Week 11.

If there are any questions in regards to the work experience week, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Ange Vetter on 4656 8888.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

WELCOME TO WEEK 10

It is amazing how quickly term 2 has passed. Your junior student would no doubt be looking forward to the two week break.

Junior School

Reporting

Reports cards will be sent in week 11.

How can you help your student use the Semester One report to improve their learning?

As a parent:

  • Carefully read the report and pay initial attention to the Behaviour and Effort grade before focusing on the academic.
  • Praise the positive aspects of the report. If your student is getting A’s and B’s in Behaviour and Effort this indicates that they are working to the best of their ability.
  • If the student has a disappointing report and tries to blame others for their poor result, try to focus on what the student can do to improve in the future.
  • Consider: Homework Club, Speaking to the teacher or the Head of Department.
  • Work collaboratively with your student and the school to focus on improvement. Learning is a team effort: Student/ Parents / Teachers/ School.
  • Attend the parent/teacher interviews. You will gain valuable information on your child as a learner.
  • Contact the school if you have any concerns

Timetable

Your student will receive a new timetable at the beginning of term 3. There are minimal changes in times and subjects for Years 11 and 12(except for a few teacher changes). However, Year Seven students will have a new timetable structure to accommodate the new electives being offered.

Who can support your student at CSHS?

There are many people who can help your student if they need it. Below is a list of some options should students not know who to see for help.

Reading Program

In term three we will continue delivering the LLI program at the school. We are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved. The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Ange Stirton at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will be notified.

Student Services

Positive Parenting course

We are currently discussing the possibility of working with CWAATSICH in facilitating a Positive Parenting Group aimed at parents of High School students in term 3. More information will be given early next term.

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

A large number of students have mobile phones at school. As a responsible parent/carer you should be checking the phone for what is being received and what is being sent via their phone. Should your child receive inappropriate material via their phone, it should be reported to the police immediately.

Outside of School Hours on School Grounds

Unless supervised, children including students of Charleville State High School are not allowed on the school grounds outside of school hours. Dedicated staff are often at school outside of school hours and are concerned that these children are not adequately supervised. Staff are rostered on Bus Duty until 3:15 pm every afternoon. It is concerning that even primary aged students are left unsupervised at the bus stop sometimes until well after 3:30 pm. If you are unable to collect your child please make other arrangements for their supervision.

PBL Rewards Trip

Early in Term 3, students who reach the criteria for positive behaviour will be offered a subsidised trip to a Theme Park. Criteria for students participating include, Starbucks cards, attendance and behaviour.

Bullying

Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim”, has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year Level Coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website to report any such issues.

Uniforms

There has been a marked improvement in the standard of uniform in the past week. Thank you to all families who send their students in correct uniform. To ensure that all students can access the correct uniform and keep warm, the P&C have reduced the cost of the school jersey from $45 to $35. In addition, the P&C are doing a one off order for Black hoodies. The hoody will have the school emblem and will cost $35. Orders with payment must be made by Friday 29 June at 12:00 noon.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working hard to fund raise to reduce the cost of the year nine camp. It is very important that every family contribute in some form to the fund raising if you wish your student to benefit from the massive fund raising effort that has been conducted. If you have not been contributing and wish to please contact Mrs Kate Jackson, Mrs Sabrina Goodingham or Mr Daniel Baeck at the school (46568888). I would like to congratulate the junior school team for time and effort that has been put into ensuring that the cost of this wonderful trip has been reduced considerably.

Until next time,

Narelle Webb

Agriculture Studies

Year 9 Ag Students have had an excellent term studying Sheep Industry including the terrible state of our export ships. Our top 5 students for this term are Paige Einam, Taylah Short, Sophie Heinemann, Libi Barker and Zoe Radnedge with A+ being awarded. All other students did extremely well with all passing their exam. They also kept busy in the Ag Plot sowing vegetable seeds and now are eagerly attending the beds waiting for the produce.

Hamish Shephard and Ty Pervical hard at work.

Ethan Fuller, Lachie Beehag, Brodie Goodman and Sophie Heinemann getting their garden bed ready.

Start of Broccili

Start of Beetroot

Year 10 have been working through Cert 1 Ag and completing projects in the Ag Plot. Jessica is remodelling a garden bed that gets plenty of western sun.

Jessica Newby

In 8 Ag we are looking at sheep from how they are farmed and managed to how they reproduce. Students have been intrigued about the programs helping lambing production to increase the sheep population in Australia and the devastation that live export can have on sheep and farmers. The Year 7 Ag class have been very enthusiastic to learn about agriculture in many different industries from plants to animals. The 7’s had to produce an informative poster on an animal or plant to inform people on how their product is farmed, the anatomy and the imports and exports of the product. This class has enjoyed their time in the Ag plot getting garden beds ready for planting and feeding the animals that we are lucky to have.

Industrial Technology and Design

What a fantastic start to the year in the ITD Department. Students have been busily working on a variety of projects with some very impressive results.

Year 11/12 construction have been working with Tim Newton from Blue Dog Training and are making great progress constructing the work area fence. This work area will used to assist students in obtaining their Certificate I in Construction.

The year 12 Engineering class are finalising their own projects. We allow students to design a project of their choice. They are allocated a budget and have to draw up a set of plans and construct their projects. Some of the students are creating dog boxes for the back of their utes, Tables and welding benches.

Grade 10 students this term have been busy working on their chess tables. Students have learnt techniques to operate different machines such as timber lathes and morticing machines. They are also practising their basic skills. Some of the students have learnt the importance of measuring twice and cutting.

Sport report for Term 2

Term 2 has not been as hectic as first term, but a lot still happened. There was sport right from the first week, with events still occurring at the end of this week.

The term started with the Under 12 rugby league and netball trials in Roma. From these trials, Sam Brooks was successful in being selected in the South West Under 12 rugby league team. Sam will be travelling to Brisbane on the weekend to compete in the state titles. However, Sam is not the only Charleville High student to make a South West team; there have been a number of students successfully selected for various teams this term.

The first to represent the South West this term was Jeremy Mazo. Jeremy travelled to Toowoomba in early May to compete as part of the Under 15 basketball team in the Darling Downs trials. This is the second year that Jeremy has achieved this honour.

Toowoomba was also the venue for our next representatives. At the end of May, the state carnival for the Under 18 boys rugby league was convened at Athletic Oval. Two students at this event represented Charleville High. Congratulations to Watjerra Briggs and Isaiah Shillingsworth for being selected in this team. This South West team was able to win on the first day against Metropolitan East, something that has never happened before. Because of this win, the team had to play their other matches in the upper tier of the carnival.

To continue this success of having more than one representative at a state carnival, touch football was the next sport. Eileen Lindsay took a group of students to Chinchilla for the South West trials and actually camped out with the students. This effort by Mrs Lindsay must have rubbed off onto the students. From all reports, they competed well at the trials with Lucy Frousheger and Ross Tilley gaining selection into their respective Under 18 touch teams. These teams competed in Rockhampton at the start of June and both players put in wonderful efforts as part of the South West teams. This effort by Charleville High students in South West teams will continue next term.

Lucy Watts travelled to St George as part of the Charleville team to compete in the Under 12 softball trials. Lucy showed great improvement from her efforts last year and was once again selected in the South West Under 12 team. Lucy and the rest of the team will be travelling to Rockhampton to compete in the state carnival from 30 August to 2 September.

We also had Jack Burns and Jasmin Woodman travel to Miles on 8 June to compete in the South West Cross Country trials. Even though neither were successful in gaining selection into the South West team, they both competed well and finished midfield. Lauren Butler and Matt Samson once again took a girls and a boys team to Toowoomba to compete in the All Schools Volleyball carnival. This year it was the boys turn to win the bronze medal; something the girls achieved last year. And now onto next term….

Our main sporting event for next term will be the school annual athletics carnival. This will be held at the high school on Friday, 10 August. Due to the number of events in the carnival, some events will be run prior to the event. Our carnival will once again be treated as a Charleville District trial for those 13 – 18 year old students. Our twelve year old students will have to back up the following Friday for the Charleville District 10 – 12 year old trials. Students meeting qualifying standards from both events will gain selection to compete in the South West Track and Field trials. These trials will be convened at St George on 6 and 7 September.

It may be winter, but there will also be trials for cricket next term. The Charleville District trials will be convened at the High School on 24 August. These trials will be for selection for Under 12 boys and girls, as well as Under 14 boys and Under 15 girls teams. The Under 12 teams will compete in the South West trials at Chinchilla from 9 – 11 September. Those students trialling for the older teams will have their names forwarded to the South West board for consideration for selection. The South West teams will compete in the Darling Downs trials in early Term 4.
