PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I was privileged last week to travel to Toowoomba with a group of our wonderful students who competed in the All Schools Volleyball competition. The 14 students were a pleasure to be with, and we were continually given positive feedback and compliments about the students and their behaviour and manners.

On the court, we also could not have been prouder of them. Throughout the tournament, they displayed perfect sportsmanship, competing hard, while always respecting their teammates and the opposition.

The girls team had to deal with a very difficult draw and pool, but came away with several wins, finishing very strongly with two very impressive wins on the final day of the tournament.

The boys team started with two very close loses, but never lost faith in their ability and each other. They then lost the first set of game 3 – but then the magic began. The boys rallied, winning the game in a tie breaker and then went on to defeat the undefeated Mansfield State High School volleyball powerhouse.

Unfortunately, the early loses left them out of the gold medal game, but after another dominant win on the final day saw themselves in the bronze medal playoff against Livingstone College, a team that had beaten them on day 1.

The boys went in as underdogs, but definitely as the crowd favourites, and confirmed just how much they had improved by winning the final in a very dominant display in two very impressive sets.

The growth and development in both teams over the competition was incredible, and a credit to each student as they displayed a great ability to listen, to learn and to work with their team mates and teachers.

A special thanks to Ms Jenna Andreatta and Ms Lauren Butler for their tireless work over the 5 days that the students were away. Seeing them in action certainly reinforced to me how lucky the students are to have such caring and supportive teachers at Charleville State High School.

BANGARRA DANCE COMPANY

The students who had been working with the Bangarra dance company this term had the opportunity to show off all of their hard work last Friday night when they unveiled their dances at a performance at the racecourse. The students did an amazing job, and impressed the gathered crowd with their creativity and talent.

Many of the students then backed up the following day to perform at the community official Yumba handover ceremony.

Congratulations to all students who were involved in this event. They now certainly have skills that can help support the understanding of the indigenous culture within the community and the school. The students will be performing again during the towns NAIDOC celebrations next term.

A special thanks to Jolene Russell and Courtney Burns for all of their work with the students over the term, as well as Amiee Dolman for her support and assistance with the project.

A special thanks also to the Bangarra dance company for engaging with our students and community, and for the HOPE foundation for their efforts in getting Bangarra to Charleville.

SENIOR BLOCK EXAMS

This term, year 11 and 12 students will be engaging in block exams once again, but this time students will be expected to be at school only when they have exams. Students will be given a passport that will need to be signed by all of their teachers and their parents before they will be able to leave school outside of exam times. Those that do not have card signed or need to stay at school will be catered for and supervised in a designated study room.

This process has been introduced to support students and allow them quality time to individually complete assignments and to study. It has also been introduced to prepare students for the external exams that will be commencing in the senior school in the near future as part of the new QCE system commencing in 2019.

TRIVIA NIGHT

Last Friday again saw the running of the annual sports trivia night. Once again, it was a fabulous night, with the town turning out to support the teachers and students who organised the night. All involved had a great night, and the money raised will help support opportunities for our students to travel away for sporting events including the All Schools Volleyball previously mentioned, rugby league, netball and touch football.

A huge thanks to Mrs Eileen Lindsay and the rest of the HPE staff for their fantastic organisation of this outstanding event.

STAFFING NEWS

Last Friday was the last day for Mrs Kristyanna Creedon, who has now left us to commence her maternity leave ahead of the arrival of her first child in a few weeks. We wish her and her husband Pete all the best during this very exciting time.

Replacing her for the rest of the year will be Ms Ashleigh Harding, who will begin at the school on Monday 11 June.

I will be taking a couple of weeks long service leave at the end of this term, so for weeks 10 and 11 of this term, the school Principal position will be in the very capable hands of Mrs Narelle Webb. I would like to thank Narelle in advance for taking on this role – I know she will do an outstanding job over the two weeks.

Next step Survey

Next Step is a state wide post-school destination survey of all students who completed Year 12 last year in Queensland.

Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to review and plan their services for students, and school system personnel to evaluate education policies as they affect the transition from school to further study and employment.

This year’s survey of 2017 Year 12 completers will commence in March 2018 and the school seeks your support in once again promoting participation in the survey. If you have a child that completed Year 12 last year, they can follow the following links to find out more about the survey.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Kohli and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students are at the stage of completing their Resume’s and cover letters during their Pastoral Care lessons. These letters will be presented to the workplace the students will be completing their work experience at. Students will be required to make contact with their designated workplace, prior to Week 11. This is so students can be made aware of working hours, dress expectations, behaviour expectations and work place health and safety requirements.

Ange Vetter is in the process of completing the Work Experience Agreements for all our Year 10 students. This Agreement is a legal document that must be signed by the workplace, parents and the school. If this document is not completed by Friday of Week 10, students will not be permitted to go to Work Experience in Week 11.

If there are any questions in regards to the work experience week, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Ange Vetter on 4656 8888.

Cheers

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING
AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

WELCOME TO WEEK 8

It is amazing how quickly term 2 has passed. A large number of opportunities have been offered to the junior school this term. The cross country, volleyball tour, fund raising activities for the year nine camp are just a few extra curricula activities that give the student the capacity to learn in a non-traditional environment. Currently, your junior student would no doubt be under pressure to complete formal assessment.

Assessment

How can you help your student through the school year, learning and assessment?

As a parent:

  • Know when their assessment due dates are and help plan
  • Ensure they are getting quality sleep
  • Ensure they are eating well
  • Ensure they have some ‘down time’ – some weeks may have more than others
  • Discuss the four learning objectives they have written for the four lessons they have each day.
  • Ensure that homework is attempted –e.g. going over class notes and ideas each day
  • Ensure they are asking staff for help if they are struggling at home
  • Contact the school if you have any concerns

Who can support your student at CSHS?

There are many people who can help your student if they need it. Below is a list of some options should students not know who to see for help.

Reading Program

At Charleville State High school one of our priorities is delivering the LLI program at the school. We are focusing on students significantly under the Regional reading benchmark. It is essential that if your child is part of this program that they fulfil all the criteria of the program- otherwise their progress will not be reflective of what could be achieved. The criteria include 100% attendance (except for extenuating circumstances) and the completion of the set homework. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the program please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Angela Stirton or Ms Wendy Porter at the school. There is a long waiting list to enter the program and therefore students who fail to meet the criteria will be exited so as to ensure the best results for the students.

The third level of intervention is another commercial program known as MultiLit (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy). If your child is part of LLI and/or MultiLit you will be notified. We are gradually introducing a fourth level of support, which we are calling Tier 4. More information will be forwarded to parents once the program is fully established.

Behaviour at Charleville SHS
PBL Rewards Trip

Early in Term 3, students who reach the criteria for positive behaviour will be offered a subsidised trip away from the school. Criteria for students participating include, Starbucks cards, attendance and behaviour.

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material. Recently, it has been brought to our attention that the use of social media apps have been used as a form of targeting students. Apps such as “SNAPCHAT” are used with the participants believing that their comments are private and will disappear. However, some individuals are screen-shotting conversations and adjusting the comments to appear that the other participants is “out of line”. This has been reported to the school on many different occasions with students from a wide range of year levels. Once again I urge all parents to know what your student is sending and receiving on their mobile phone. It is not an invasion of privacy. It is good parenting. Until the student is legal age, the parent is responsible for all content on mobile phones.

STYMIE

Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim”, has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year level coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website below to report any such issues.

https://www.stymie.com.au/

Racist actions and comments will also not be tolerated. Please ensure that you have conversations with your student on treating every human with respect. Young people at times do not realise that their actions and or words may be viewed as offensive. I will be personally addressing every junior student on showing resilience when they are not treated with respect as well as the correct use of Standard Australian English (SAE) which is the language that is used in Queensland schools.

Recently, I was encouraged to hear that students in the junior school made it very clear to a peer when inappropriate language was used towards a friend. I will build on their actions to address the rest of the junior school.

Immunization Clinics for Years 7. Our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Sellin does an excellent job in organizing this essential service for our students. I would like to congratulate all of the year seven students on their excellent behaviour whilst the immunizations took place. The Queensland Health workers said they were the best group they had ever immunized.

Vollyball Trip

Last week a number of junior school students travelled to Toowoomba to compete in the volleyball competition. I would like to publically acknowledge that the accompanying teachers, Miss Butler, Miss Andeatta, and Mr Samson who dedicated a huge amount of their own time to train and then travel with the students to ensure that they have this wonderful opportunity.

Year Nine Camp

Students, parents and teachers are working hard to fund raise to reduce the cost of the year nine camp towards the end of the year. It is very important that every family contribute in some form to the fund raising if you wish your student to benefit from the massive fund raising effort that has been conducted. If you have not been contributing and wish to please contact Mrs Kate Jackson and Mr Dan Baeck at the school (46568888). I would like to congratulate staff for the amount of time and effort that has been put into ensuring that the cost of this wonderful trip has been reduced considerably. Please ensure that you hand in your permission forms and deposit when requested.

Until next time,

Narelle Webb
Deputy Principal
Junior Schooling/Student Services

Bangarra:

Last week saw the end of the Bangarra Rekindling program for this year. The students worked hard over the last 6 weeks continuing their storyboards, learning choreography and making up their own dances. This has most certainly paid off with the students performing Friday the 26th of May and doing a fantastic job. There hard work paid off for that performance where they have impressed the teaching staff, community and the Bangarra staff. Congratulations to all who participated in this program. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for our dancers.

Life skills:

Students have been working on their drumming skills this term in life skills. We have been participating in drumbeat where students are working together to create some awesome sounds! The students in year 7 and 8 have the opportunity to record their music or even perform it later in the term. Year 7 Life skills have also been working hard to develop schedules for home to help them with getting ready to go to school and coming home from school- this also means teaching them skills so they can help around the house!
