PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

P&C NEWS

I am constantly thankful for the amazing contribution our P&C make to the school. Over the past month many parents have been very busy raising funds to help support the school and our students.

During the ANZAC day celebrations in the town, the P&C helped organise a stall at the concert to help raise money for the Year 9 camp later in the year. Last weekend, many parents assisted to help sell raffle tickets for a swag at the show, as well as operating the bar until late in the night to help raise funds to support the school.

A special thanks must go to Mrs Kelly Shearwin, our new vice-president, for all of her hard work and time in organising these events.

They have also been supportive in the recent Mother’s Day breakfast that was held on the sunny grassed area in front of the school’s trade training centre.

It was a wonderful morning with 43 community members coming along to enjoy a relaxing morning of a wonderful breakfast and delicious coffee served in a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere.

Thank you to Mrs Kate Jackson, Ms Sue McDermott, Mrs Leith Brennan, and Mrs Jenny Peacock, for all of their preparation and organisation of the day. Thanks also to all of the parents and students that also assisted on the day. It was an undeniable success, and from all account something that many hope is an annual event.

CHARLEVILLE SHOW

The Charleville Show has been and gone for another year, and once again it was wonderful to see how many Charleville State High School students were involved in so many facets of the show. Whether it was as a contestant in the Junior Miss Showgirl, competing at the rodeo or riding events, or placing an entry in one of the cooking, building, floral arrangements, art work or photography competitions. There also seemed to be a large number of our students who were very successful as well, with many of their entries having a first, second or third placed certificate attached to them. I look forward to finding out all of the successes of the students in the coming days.

BANGARRA DANCE COMPANY

The Bangarra dance company have returned this week for the third and final week of working with our students. The students have been practicing with the dance company each day and this will culminate in a performance at the racecourse of the dances created at 7pm on Friday 25 May. All are welcome to attend and support the students at this performance. The following is the plan for Friday and all are welcome to participate in this celebration of the student’s hard work:

  • 2pm late lunch/afternoon tea with Elders/community reps and any available Youth Program Team reps.

( at the Racecourse )

  • 7pm performance followed by community BBQ – further chance to meet participants and speak with Elders/community leaders

NAPLAN

Naplan tests for Year 7 and Year 9 students were completed last week. From all reports, students remained calm and focused, giving the tests their best efforts each day. Results from the tests will not be known until late in term 3. From these results we will gain some further insight into how each student is progressing in the areas of literacy and numeracy.

Thank you to Mrs Sabrina Goodingham, Mrs Narelle Webb and Mrs Katherine Nuecom for all of their work in the preparation and delivery of the tests.

Murri Shirt Day – Monday 28th May 2018

In recognition of Reconciliation Week, the school will be having a Murri Shirt Day on Monday 28th May. Students and staff are invited to wear a Murri shirt to show their support for Reconciliation and to celebrate our indigenous culture. If you don’t have a shirt, Jolene and Jenny have plenty of spares to lend to students. Drop in and see them at the Student Support Centre (C Block).

Diamond Spirit Camp July 2018

Congratulations to Marni Briggs, Jasmine Steer and Peta Russell, who have all secured a place on the Diamond Spirit Camp in July. All the students had to prepare a creative piece representing their local community and/or this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Because of her, we can’. Peta created a painting, Marni wrote a written piece and drew a pencil drawing and Jasmine created a written piece. All of the students worked hard on their creative pieces and are well deserving of their place on this camp. Well done!

Diamond Spirit Netball Development

If you are bored during lunch on a Thursday, come on down to hall and play netball! Netball is a fantastic way of being active, learn to work as a team and improve your coordination! A number of staff came along last week and we all had a great half game.

Location: Hall
Time: Thursdays at 11:55 – 12:25
Everyone is welcome!

Next step Survey

Next Step is a state wide post-school destination survey of all students who completed Year 12 last year in Queensland.

Insights gained from Next Step assists schools to review and plan their services for students, and school system personnel to evaluate education policies as they affect the transition from school to further study and employment.

This year’s survey of 2017 Year 12 completers will commence in March 2018 and the school seeks your support in once again promoting participation in the survey. If you have a child that completed Year 12 last year, they can follow the following link to find out more about the survey.

Indigenous Education Community Meetings

Charleville State High School holds an Indigenous Education Community Meeting once a month. This Committee provides a link for our indigenous community/family to share knowledge, celebrate and be involved in the education of the children enrolled at Charleville State High School. If you have a child/grandchild attending Charleville State High School who identifies as ATSI or you are interested in the education of ATSI children in our community then we welcome and encourage you to attend our meetings.

In 2018, these meetings will be held in the school Professional Library, situated in the school office, and will occur on the second Thursday of each month. If you wish to discuss a particular topic please forward your agenda item to jruss336@eq.edu.au prior to meeting day.

QCE Tracking

Mr Kohli and I are busy closely monitoring our senior students, to ensure they are on a pathway to successfully gain their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). We will also be organising parent/student interviews with those students who are ‘at risk’ of not gaining their QCE, so we can form an action plan.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students are at the stage of completing their Resume’s and cover letters during their Pastoral Care lessons. These letters will be presented to the workplace the students will be completing their work experience at. Students will be required to make contact with their designated workplace, prior to Week 11. This is so students can be made aware of working hours, dress expectations, behaviour expectations and work place health and safety requirements.

Ange Vetter is in the process of completing the Work Experience Agreements for all our Year 10 students. This Agreement is a legal document that must be signed by the workplace, parents and the school. If this document is not completed by Friday of Week 10, students will not be permitted to go to Work Experience in Week 11.

If there are any questions in regards to the work experience week, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

VET News

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeship opportunities coming up.

If your student is looking for the opportunity to be involved, please contact Ange Vetter at the school on 4656 8888.

Thank you to all the businesses that support our students and our school. If you have an opportunity within your business to employ a school based trainee or apprentice, please contact Ange Vetter on 4656 8888.

Cheers

Year 7 and 9 Students: NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy)

The NAPLAN tests were conducted on Tuesday 15 May, Wednesday 16 May and Thursday 17 May.

What is the purpose of NAPLAN?

The purpose of NAPLAN is to assess the skills of all Australian students in literacy and numeracy against national minimum standards. NAPLAN is very useful to us at Charleville SHS as we use the information (data) to help us understand every individual and their learning needs. We also use the data to look at cohort trends to ascertain whether targeted programs are required. Along with other diagnostic tools such as PAT M and PAT R, we are able to better know each student as a learner and plan our programs and lessons around the needs of our students.

Results from the tests will provide important information about children's progress in literacy and numeracy. Following the tests, schools and students will receive a statement of performance in relation to the national minimum standards.

How did our students cope with NAPLAN at Charleville SHS?

The majority of our students indeed tried their hardest, and focused on their own work. Most students sat in the hall for the NAPLAN tests. I find it will also be a useful orientation process for students to get accustomed to exam conditions in preparation for the NEW SATE external system that they will experience in the senior years. All staff involved were most impressed with the attitude and behaviour of most students.

IMMUNISATION

  • Immunisation Clinics for Years 7. All participating year seven students received information and forms to be signed for the year seven immunisation program which commenced in March. The second round of immunizations will occur this term.
  • On Monday 14th May the Tackle Flu program took place providing influenza vaccinations to senior indigenous students.

SCHOOL GROUNDS

For safety reasons, please be aware that unless supervised, students/children are not allowed on school grounds outside of school hours.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL)

Charleville State High School is a PBL school.

Positive Behaviour for Learning is:

  • The most effective way to develop a safe and supportive learning environment;
  • A school community (students, parents and school staff) work together to establish the expectations for behaviour. The expectations are simple, clear and explicit. BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE and BE A LEARNER;
  • Developed as research shows that students are more likely to respond positively when they know what is expected of them and when responses to behaviour are fair and consistent.

All students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours. Some students will require additional support to learn the expected behaviour. A few students will require intensive support to assist them to learn appropriate ways of behaving.

As part of the PBL process we encourage Expected Behaviours with
Starbucks – rewarding Expected Behaviour

  • free and frequent
  • medium term ( Starbucks accumulate)
  • Long term (Rewards trip celebration)

MOBILE PHONES

We have had a very positive and supportive response from the community regarding the changes to the Charleville SHS mobile phone policy. Year seven students are not allowed to have a phone at school. Years 8 to 12 students are allowed to have a phone in their possession but not use it in school hours. A Teacher may give permission for a student to use their phone within the teacher’s supervision. Strictly, no social media is allowed during school hours.

The inappropriate use of mobile phones is occasionally reported to the school. As the mobile phone is used outside of school hours, we recommend that you contact the police if you have concerns.

As responsible adults, please carefully consider your young persons’ best interest and the amount of time they use digital media.

I urge all parents to know what your student has stored on their phone/electronic devices, what they receive and what they send.

Student Planner and Uniform Code

Every student at Charleville State High School receives a Student Planner (Diary). This Planner contains valuable information regarding the day to day running of the school. At the back of the planner is the 2017 Dress Code. It clearly states that a school jacket is available for purchase from the P & C uniform shop. It also states that students may wear a plain black jacket. With the weather expected to get cooler, please ensure that your student wears the correct uniform including a jacket. In the junior school the Year Level Coordinators will contact home if the student consistently does not wear the school uniform to inform the parents. Naturally there is the unique occasion that the jacket is in the wash or misplaced however if the students are routinely not in uniform consequences may apply.

Behaviour Management at Charleville State High School

At Charleville SHS we have a system of behaviour monitoring cards in place for students who may require assistance in following the four B’s (Be Safe, Be responsible, Be Respectful, Be a Learner) and four V’s (Organisation, Cooperation, Resilience and Integrity). A yellow card is issued by the Year Level coordinator and a red card by the deputy. If your child is placed on a behaviour monitoring card you are asked to sign the card each evening. Each student is unique and the length of time on a card varies. However a red card also requires the student to do a 20 minute detention in the second break. If your child is placed on a Behaviour Monitoring Card, feel free to call either the Year Level Coordinator (yellow) or myself (red) to discuss the behaviour of your student.
