PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

YEAR 12 FORMAL

As 2017 draws to its conclusion, staff, students and families have been busy with end of year recognitions and celebrations. Following on from our inspiring Awards night, Saturday November 11th saw the Year 12s step out in all their finery at the annual Year 12 Formal.

The students looked wonderful as they proceeded down the red carpet, alighting from their variety of rides including muscle cars, buses, trucks, motorbikes and even helicopters! The students all appeared to have a wonderful night, with plenty of smiles, dancing, with lasting memories created and a few tears shared on the night.

A special thanks to our year level coordinators, Lauren Butler and Leighton Webb for their fantastic organisation and preparation for the night, and to Jenny Peacock for her great efforts in overseeing the decorating of the venue. The racecourse room looked amazing!

Thank you also to all the staff, parents and community members who came along either to watch the students arrive or to attend the dinner on the night. I am sure the students appreciated the support and attention given to them on their very special night.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION

On Friday 17th November, the Year 12 students celebrated their graduation from Year 12 with a graduation ceremony in the school hall. This ceremony not only signifies that the students have made it to the end of 12 years of schooling, but that they have all graduated with either a QCIA ( Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement) or a QCE ( Queensland Certificate of Education).

The students were very proud of their achievements, as they well should be. To achieve this means that they had to pass their subjects and complete courses to achieve these certificates.

The ceremony was a wonderful morning, full of emotion as the students realised that this is it – the end of their school days and the start of their adult life. Thank you again to all of the parents and community members who turned up to share this special moment with the amazing 46 graduating Year 12 students.

On behalf of the whole Charleville State High School community, I wish this special group of students all the best for the future. I hope that your lives are everything you hope and wish them to be. Remember that “The Sky is the Limit” for every single one of you - take care and have a safe and amazing future!

NEW JUNIOR SECONDARY AREA

The new covered area in the Junior Precinct continues to move forward with the commencement of the shade structure starting last week. This will continue to develop over the last couple of weeks at school, with the completion of this occurring now in the week after school finishes. All will be completed and ready for students to use at the start of 2018.

MURWEH SHIRE COUNCIL MEETING

Last week the Murweh shire council visited the school, holding their monthly meeting at the school. This is a fantastic initiative by the council, to bring their meeting to the school each year so that students can see the processes of the council in action.

Our 2017 and 2018 leaders viewed the council in action, as they debated issues and worked collaboratively to resolve them for the good of the community and shire. The students then shared a morning tea with the council, where they were able to ask the council members questions about how the council functions.

Special thanks must go to Mayor Annie Liston and Council CEO, Neil Polglase, and the other members involved for bringing this initiative to the school. We look forward to the council bringing to the school again in October 2018.

BEYOND BRONCOS

The Beyond Broncos team visited Charleville State High School on Monday 20 November to work with our Indigenous female students. Some of the Queensland Firebirds, including Romelda Aiken, joined the regular Broncos staff of Scott Prince and Bo De la Cruz to work with the students on the day.

It was certainly exciting to have such sport stars here at the school working with our students on goals and strategies to help them improve their schooling outcomes into the future.

Thanks must go to Courtney Burns, our local Beyond Broncos counsellor, for organising the day for the girls, who were very excited about their brush with these famous sport stars.

Year 10 & 11’s Last Day

1st December

Year 7, 8 & 9 Last Day

The final week of school for our Year 10 and Year 11 students is upon us, so it is a good time to remind everyone that we need to keep the momentum going until the end of the year. Assessment pieces are still being completed as I write this and this is the final opportunity for students to get the best result they can for their last report card for 2017.

All report cards will be posted out in the final week of school.

P & C Wheel Barrow Christmas Raffle

The Charleville SHS P & C are running a Wheel Barrow Christmas Raffle this year. The Raffle will raise valuable funds to support our students and our school.

We are looking for donations of non-perishable foods and alcohol from families. All donations can be brought to the school office, before the end of the school year. Tickets will be on sale in the front office in the last week of school and up to and including the Christmas Market. The draw will happen after the Christmas Market.

Safe and Happy Christmas

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Charleville State High School community and the wider community of Charleville for a wonderful year. It was a big decision to move my family back to town at the beginning of the year and one I am so glad I made. I have really enjoyed this year and look forward to the future at Charleville State High School.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Cheers
Vanessa Moller

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school in 2017, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

At the last P&C meeting we reviewed the Mobile Phone policy to ensure we are putting emphasis on the students’ best educational outcomes.

The updated mobile phone policy will be printed in the 2018 Student Planners. To summarise, Students in Years 8 to 12 are allowed to have their phones in their possession at school. However, they are not allowed to use their phone in any way (including accessing social media) during school hours. Year 7 students are not to bring phones to school unless they are handed to the office for safekeeping during school hours.

The Mobile Phone policy has been updated as a result of intensive research into supporting students to improve their face to face social skills. The additional benefit will be to prepare the students for the work force where social media/phone use is not acceptable during work hours.

Immunization

Most students have now received all relevant immunizations. If you want to query you child’s immunization status please contact our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Sellin.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

We are very excited to have our Student Support Centre established in Term 4. C block will now house our CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC, Mrs Jenny Peacock, our SBYHN, Miss Jen Sellin, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as our newly appointed Beyond Broncos staff member, Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own. It is appreciated if you were able to assist in the form of donations. As fruit is offered in the third break, Donations of fruit would be a great benefit.

Goodbye and Good Luck Year 12

The last few weeks have been busy for the Year 12 students, but now that their secondary education is complete, they can finally relax for a moment. It was great to see the students present in their finery at the formal two weeks ago. There were some interesting modes of transport for the arrival on the red carpet, including a prime mover and the school bus, thanks to Mrs Lindsay for driving. The racecourse complex was elegantly decorated and by all accounts, the students had a great time. Plenty of photos were taken on the night and the students will be able to cherish the memories of the celebration of their schooling.

Last Friday’s graduation ceremony was the final formality before the traditional drive past. It was clear that the emotion of the occasion got to some as they realised that the rest of their lives is up to them. It was an opportunity to reflect on the work they had put in and the help they had received from their teachers, especially this year. I know some teachers became quite emotional when they received gifts and kind words from students in acknowledgement of the hard work they had put in.

I would like to formally congratulate the graduating class of 2017 and wish them all the best in the future.

Support for people with a disability going into the workforce

As the school farewells another cohort of fine year 12 students. The question is what support is out there for people with a disability? The Department of Education Queensland has this covered. There are a number of options for students or job seekers with a disability to find employment through government providers such as, Centrelink and Providers of Australian Government Employment Services (PAGES), Job Network and the Disability Employment Network (DEN) programs.

Other options include:

  • support to find a job, including job skills training
  • intensive on-the-job training provided by a specialised employment agency e.g. a DEN provider
  • support for employers to enable people with disabilities to access and remain in the workplace

Young Carers Support Program

Do you live in a family where someone has a disability, illness, or mental health concern?

Do you help out a lot at home?

Then we might just be able to assist you!

You may be able to get some FREE HELP from the Young Carers Support program.

The Commonwealth Carer Respite and Carelink Centre, Young Carer Program is an ongoing program, federally funded, needs based program, its aim is to support young people, who are in a caring role, between the ages of 12-18 years to complete their secondary education. We are seeking referrals for eligible participants.

Often Young Carers are overlooked or not recognised because they accept their caring role as a normal part of their daily routine and just part of life. This can leave them vulnerable to carer strain, stress and fatigue. It can be a leading cause for a student disengaging from the school system and often not completing their secondary education, leaving them disadvantaged in their future endeavours. The purpose of this program is to support these young people by assisting them with the ongoing costs related to their education, respite for them to focus on study and maintain school attendance, access to professional tutoring regardless of abilities and referral to other services if need be. (see attachments).

If you or somebody you know would like some further information please don’t hesitate to call

Jenny Peacock, Youth Support Coordinator on 46568888 or call a Young Carer Support Worker on 1800 052 222.
