PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Thank you to everyone who attended our awards night last Thursday night. It was great to see so many of our parents and community members there to support and acknowledge the fantastic achievements of so many of our incredible students.

I was very pleased that we returned the event to the school hall, which enabled us to more readily showcase the work of the students through the faculty displays at the back of the hall. I was also so proud of our leaders, Jewel, Antoine, Michaela, Ian for the way they led the evening, as well as all of our other current and 2018 leaders for the way they confidently and competently presented their sections of the program.

A massive thank you must go to Mr Sebastian Kohli for all of his work in preparing and organising for the evening. It is an incredibly large task, collating information.

Congratulations to all of the recipients on the night. The major award winners on the night were:

UQ Create change Award Michaela Walker

Congratulations to all of these students for their very deserved selections to these positions. I know they will do a tremendous job in these roles and I look forward to working with all of these terrific students in 2018.

The school captains and vice-captains will have their first official duty in their new roles this Saturday when they will attend a Remembrance Day commemorative service at the memorial in the town hall grounds.

NEW JUNIOR SECONDARY AREA

Work has continued on the new Junior Secondary area. All of the initial works have now been completed and we are just awaiting the completion of the manufacture and delivery of the shade structure. Once this occurs, the builder will be able to put in the supports, complete the concreting under the structure and construct the roof for the covered area. Once this is completed, some artificial turf will be laid and landscaping will complete the job. Completion is still on track to happen well before the end of the school year, ready to go for the start of 2018.

YEAR 12 END OF YEAR

The end of the year is fast approaching for the Year 12 students, although there is still a lot of work for many of them to do this week, with assignments and exams still to be completed. It is essential that students stay focused and complete these assessment items to the best of their ability – there is still the potential for students to improve on their marks and increase their final Ops. Conversely, a drop now can have a detrimental effect on results, so it is extremely important that they stay focused to the end.

The Year 12 students will be celebrating the end of their 12 years of schooling at their Formal on Saturday night. It is a very exciting time for the students and their families as they celebrate this transition from school life to “the rest of their lives”.

Students have been reminded that they are still students of Charleville State High School until Friday 17th November, and as such, the expectations around their behaviours remain the same. Students are expected to uphold the values and behaviours of the school until this time, including all school events such as the school formal on Saturday.

I am sure that all students will respect this, and I look forward to everyone having a very enjoyable evening on Saturday.

Special thanks must go to Lauren Butler, Leighton Webb, Jenny Peacock, Fiona Day and Vanessa Moller for all of their work in preparing for the evening.

Origin and MIGAS Traineeships and Apprenticeships

Origin Energy, together with MIGAS, is searching for the next generation of mechanical and electrical apprentices, and telecommunications trainees to join the regional Queensland team in Western Downs. The six roles will be based in the Surat Basin region and may work across Origin sites in Condabri Central, Talinga, Reedy Creek (Yuleba) and Spring Gully.

THE POSITIONS:

There are a total of 6 positions available across three trade specialisations:

PROCESS PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEESHIPS

An excellent traineeship opportunity to up-skill or cross-skill for previously qualified applicants. As a Plant Process Trainee you will work varying rosters across the week depending on the requirements of your team and will work a 76-hour fortnight. Your on-the-job training will involve being mentored by industry specialists working in the field or gas plant.

ELECTRICAL AND INSTRUMENTATION (DUAL TRADE) APPRENTICESHIPS

Gain a respected dual trade qualification whilst obtaining valuable on the job experience. As a full time Mechanical Fitting Apprentice, you will be working as part of an integrated team responsible for maintaining new and existing mechanical equipment. Your on-the-job training will see you learning about preventative and corrective maintenance activities.

LOCAL INFORMATION SESSIONS – REGISTRATIONS OPEN

Local community information sessions in Chinchilla, Miles and Roma will be held to provide more details about the roles and support for applicants. Attendees will hear directly from Origin staff about what it’s like to be part of their team and what strengths and skills they are looking for in candidates.

Charleville State High School is trying to organise a tele-link to an information session and we will keep student informed of when this will occur.

Please see Ange Vetter to register your interest in the information session.

The Final Countdown

Our Year 12 students are in the final weeks of their secondary schooling. We are impressing upon our Year 12’s that they must maintain focus through to the end, even though this can be challenging, when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Preparations are well underway for Formal and Graduation, so students are reminded to listen to notices for important announcements. If parents have any queries or concerns, please contact the school.

Cheers

STUDENT SERVICES

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

At the next P&C meeting we will be reviewing the Mobile Phone policy to ensure we are putting emphasis on the students’ best educational outcomes.

Immunization

Most students have now received all relevant immunizations. If you want to query you child’s immunization status please contact our School Based Youth Health Nurse, Jen Sellin.

Immunization for Meningococcal (15 to 19 year olds)

The majority of year ten students were immunized for meningococcal disease in term 3. If your child is aged between 15 and 19 then the immunization is free this year. We are pleased to say that the free immunization has now been offered to all year 10, 11 and 12 students. It was pleasing to see how many students valued the opportunity and returned their forms to receive the vaccination.

Diagnostic Testing (PAT R and PAT M)

At Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan/focus. All students in Year 7,8, 9 and 10 are given a diagnostic Reading Comprehension test in term 4. We use this valuable data along with Naplan, Academic and teachers’ anecdotal notes to plan for the future to ensure that students reach their potential.

Students were also given a diagnostic (PAT M) test for mathematics in term 4. We are currently examining this data to assist us in planning for 2018.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

We are very excited to have our Student Support Centre established in Term 4. C block will now house our CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC, Mrs Jenny Peacock, our SBYHN, Miss Jen Sellin, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as our newly appointed Beyond Broncos staff member, Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School. Part of supporting the students is to provide nutritious food to those who are unable to supply their own. It is appreciated if you were able to assist in the form of donations. As fruit is offered in the third break, Donations of fruit would be a great benefit.

2017 Sport – The Year in Review

With the winding down of 2017, it is a good time to reflect on what has happened in sport throughout the year.

As usual, the year started with the girls travelling to compete in the South West Softball trials at Chinchilla at the end of Week 2. To ensure that these girls did not miss the swimming carnival, it was held on the Friday of Week 3.

This was once again a combination of our school carnival and Charleville District trials. And as usual, Tobruk reigned supreme to win their third swimming carnival in a row. Harrison tried hard to make sure no other team could place their name on the trophy, by promptly breaking it after being presented to him on parade. Were Tobruk headed for a clean sweep for the third year in a row? The rest of first term included South West trials for soccer, basketball, netball, rugby league and swimming. The swimming trials were held in Charleville for the first time in many years, with the Year 10 Hospitality class earning early experience in food preparation and service.

After the Easter holiday break, sport continued for the students of Charleville High. There were SW trials in touch, cross country and Under 12 netball and rugby league. However, the big question at Charleville was, “Could Tobruk continue their winning streak?”

This year’s cross-country had the addition of a colour run as part of the participation event. Thanks to all of those involved in organising this event. It increased the participation and Dylan’s video of the run showed the enjoyment had by all…..but did Tobruk win again? After tabulating the results and checking them to ensure it was correct, Alamein were able to break the Tobruk domination and were declared winners of the event.

With the expectation of winning removed from Tobruk’s shoulders, how would they perform at the athletics carnival? This would be revealed at the start of Term 3.

With one of the highest participation rates for years, all teams were out to win the final carnival of the year. Kokoda and Alamein put in mighty efforts, but the forces of nature had realigned, meaning Tobruk were once again declared the winners. There were also Under 14 cricket trials convened with Charleville students selected to participate in the Darling Downs trials. As you can see, next term will be hectic, with some sports having trials at the end of this term, so listen to noticed for more information. There also has to be District trials for a number of Under 12 and Under 15 teams to be added to this list. Due to the possibility of Cunnamulla combining in the team sports, these dates are yet to be finalised. The district is also planning to include Development days at the end of each of the first three terms. These will focus on not only development of the students’ skills, but also developing the qualifications for staff and community members. We are hoping that Term 1 will be Softball and Touch.

Further options to develop qualifications will be on Saturday, 24th March at Miles. This free event is open to staff and community members and is organised by Sport and Rec. The sports on offer have not yet been finalised, but it is hoped to include, Touch, Netball, Soccer and First Aid. Further details will be published early in the new year.

New Classroom Amplifiers Are a Hit

Recently, Charleville State High School was lucky enough to receive targeted resourcing that has led to the purchase and installation of FrontRow sound technology in most of our classrooms for Year 7-9 students. These systems amplify the teacher’s voice slightly above the background noise and distribute the sound evenly throughout the entire classroom. Research has shown that many distractions in the classroom simply come down to students finding it difficult to hear instructions. Whilst this technology has primarily been purchased to support the learning needs of students with disabilities, FrontRow technology can have a consistent and important effect on outcomes for all students with many different kinds of challenges.

Senior Physics

As the senior school year draws to a close, I would like to use this opportunity to say what a pleasure it is to teach this group of enthusiastic, talented and hard-working individuals. Physics is not an easy subject, it requires sound knowledge in science and mathematics, along with strong problem-solving, analytical and research skills to do well. This year we have covered a huge range of topics, starting from mechanics and thermodynamics to advanced ideas such as relativity and astrophysics. We have been pushing the students hard by exposing them to challenging concepts and tasks similar to first year university level, but these students have responded extremely well. I am pleased to announce that every single student in the class will be passing the subject, with more than half likely to receive a B or higher. Well done guys!

Below are some photos of students carrying out their own experiments. Some of the designs are pretty clever and advanced!

William Kok
Physics Teacher

Year 9 Humanities

During Term 4 students have been examining Australia as a trading nation and its place within the rising economies of South-East Asia and the broader global economy. They have analysed the live cattle trade with Indonesia, the car manufacturing industry in Australia, foreign aid to other countries during times of natural disasters and the economic impacts of holding major sporting events in Australia. This unit has given students an opportunity to see how Australia engages with the world economically and what factors influences that engagement.

Transition Day 2 – 26th October 2017

On Thursday 26th October, Charleville State High School welcomed for the last time in 2017 the Year Six students from Charleville State School, St Mary’s School, Morven State School, Augathella State School and Charleville School of Distance Education to experience high school life, before they embark on their high school journey in 2018. Students on this day, all completed a scavenger hunt in teams, similar to the Amazing Race around Charleville State High School, learning where all the different locations are that they will need to know for 2018. Students also participated in a range of other activities, including watercolour painting in Art, imaginative writing in English, building their box in ITD, sound experiments in Science, number problems in Maths, and origami in Japanese.

All students had a great day, with many wanting to return, not next year, but the next day! The fun didn’t all happen in the classroom though, with students playing touch football with our Year 7, 8 and 9 students on our junior oval. Our Year 7s for 2018 look like they will be off to a flying start, with each student having made friendships with our senior and junior leaders for 2018 during their activities and lunch, and all definitely feeling comfortable in the high school setting. A massive thank you needs to go to the all students – primary and high, and their teachers who made this day so successful. We look forward to welcoming all Year 6 students as Year 7s in 2018 at our school.

Remember, if you or someone you know has a student coming to Charleville State High School in 2018, please get them to complete their enrolment pack and return it to the high school. Enrolment interviews for Year 7, 2018 are being conducted this Wednesday and Thursday in the office. Please contact the office to make your booking. We also have our final parent and student information session on 14th November in the School Administration building. This is a great opportunity to find out what your student needs for their first day, and who the teachers will be.

Until next time,
