PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Hello everyone, and welcome to the final term of 2017. The year has certainly flown, particularly for our Year 12 students, who now have only a few short weeks left of their Secondary Schooling lives. A very exciting time, but one that can also be a very daunting one for the Year 12s, as they move from the surety of school life to the uncertainty of their future after school. Our Senior Secondary team is working hard with every one of our senior students to make the future a little surer and secure for them as they prepare for life after school.

Report cards will have been received over the holidays, along with NAPLAN results for students in Years 7 and 9. Please discuss these results with your student and do not hesitate to contact your student’s teacher in regards to these in Term 4.

NEW JUNIOR SECONDARY AREA

Work on the new Junior Secondary area has now commenced, with the builders getting in to clear the area over the holidays. Over the coming weeks the new drainage will be laid, before a large new slab and covered area goes into the area. I will keep parents updated as the build progresses, but am hopeful that this is completed sometime within the next 4-6 weeks.

This will give students a much needed outdoor covered area where they will be able to sit and play, protected from the heat of the Charleville summer sun.

BEYOND BRONCOS

On our first day back at school on Tuesday 3rd October, we welcomed some very special guests to officially launch “Beyond Broncos” into our school. Ex NRL stars, Scott Prince and Justin Hodges, along with other Beyond Broncos staff came to introduce themselves to our indigenous girls within the school, who they will be working with in the coming years to set goals for themselves and to reward those that have met their goals around attendance, engagement and achievement.

These Stars spoke to the girls and were inspirational in the messages they had for this group of students. The “Beyond Broncos” team will be coming into the school at least twice a term, to work with the girls into 2018 and beyond. The Broncos also fund ongoing support for the girls in the form of a staff member for two days a week. I am very excited to announce that Courtney Burns has been selected to take on this role. Courtney has worked with some of our students previously and will be a great role model and support for our students.

“Our Indigenous Student Ambassadors, Sophie Saffy and Anastasia O”Neill, with Beyond Broncos staff Justin Hodges, Bo De La Cruz and Scott Prince”

“Scott Prince from Beyond Broncos presenting to our students”

Our two Indigenous Student Ambassadors, Sophie and Anastasia, did a fantastic job as MC’s for the event, leading proceedings in front of their fellow students, parents and a number of special guests from the community, including our Mayor Annie Liston.

Special thanks must also go to Mrs. Sue Eustace-Earle from the HOPE foundation for their continued help and support in getting the “Beyond Broncos” foundation into Charleville State High School.

EXCURSIONS

Charleville State High School continues to strive to provide students with exciting and challenging experiences. Last week, a very committed team of Touch Football students travelled to Brisbane to compete in the All Schools Touch Football Competition.

The students had been very committed to their training, practicing weekly for all of the previous term in preparation for this carnival. Special thanks must go to Mrs Eileen Lindsay for all of her work training the students, and also to Mr Josh Jensen for going along with the students with Mrs Lindsay for the 6 days the students were away.

This week, our Year 9 cohort travel away to Moreton Island for their very exciting year level camp. Many of the students worked extremely hard under the guidance of Ms Kathryn Goult to raise money for the camp to significantly reduce the cost for all students.

I am sure they will have an amazing time, and will certainly come back next week with life long memories of this fantastic camp.

A reminder of some important dates coming up this term:

Week 4 Thursday 26th October – Day 2 of transition days for Year 6 students
Week 5 Thursday 2nd November – School Awards Presentation Ceremony at the School Hall
Week 6 Saturday 11th November – Year 12 Formal
Week 7 Tuesday 14th November – Year 7 2018 Final Information night
Week 7 Friday 17th November – Year 12 Graduation

I look forward to catching up with many of you in the coming weeks,

Take care

The Final Countdown

Our Year 12 students are in the final weeks of their secondary schooling. We are impressing upon our Year 12’s that they must maintain focus through to the end, even though this can be challenging, when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Preparations are well underway for the Awards Night, Formal and Graduation, so students are reminded to listen to notices for important announcements. If parents have any queries or concerns, please contact the school.

Rural LiFE - Women in Agriculture Excursion

On Wednesday 4th October, I had the pleasure of attending the Rural LiFE Women in Ag excursion to Croxdale. Eight of our young women, from Year 8 to Year 12, attended with Ange Vetter and myself accompanying them. The students learned valuable skills including rope tying, changing a tyre, using a fire extinguisher and vehicle maintenance. The event was organised by Australian Agricultural College, who were running a series of events in Charleville, around technology in Agriculture.

Beyond Broncos Launch

On Tuesday 3rd October, the Beyond Broncos Girls Academy launched at Charleville State High School. The Academy is designed to help students with achievement, attendance and behaviour goals. We welcome Courtney Burns as our Beyond Broncos Mentor. Courtney will be based in the Student Support Centre in C Block.

Road Safety Workshop

Our Year 11’s participated in a Road Safety workshop on Monday 9th October, run by the Queensland Fire and Rescue. This workshop focussed on educating the students about the Fatal Five, protective driving behaviours and awareness around responsibilities associated with having a drivers licence. While parts of the workshop were quite confronting, it was a valuable learning experience for our young drivers.

Traineeships

We have a number of traineeships and apprenticeships available at the moment. Please see Ange Vetter for more information on how to apply.

Thank you to all our local businesses that support our students with Work Experience, Traineeships and Apprenticeships. You offer our students valuable time and experiences within the workplace.

Cheers

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING
AND STUDENT SERVICES NEWS

Junior School

Welcome to Term 4. I hope everyone had a well-deserved rest over the break.

Timetable

Term 4 sees the return of a number of staff who have been on leave last term. The minor changes to the timetable are necessary for students returning to their original teachers. 7A has had a number of room changes.

2018 Timetable - Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 received letters with their report cards concerning their elective subjects for 2018. In 2018, all Years 8, 9 and 10 students will be able to choose two electives. I urge parents and students to choose wisely as the electives are for the entire year and students will find it difficult to change electives after the first two weeks. Although students were given a range of electives to choose from, only the three most popular electives will be able to run. Students who do not return their forms will be placed in an elective. As the deadline for the elective selection was last Friday, most students who returned their forms have been allocated their first choice. All students must still return their forms.

Are your contact details up to date at the school? Please call Nadonna at the office or send a note if you have had a change in address or phone number. It is important that we are able to contact you at all times.

Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS

The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone inappropriately at school, then the student is not to have their phone at school. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age appropriate material.

Immunization – Year Seven students

Most Year 7 students received their final immunization for the year, last week. I would like to commend the year seven students in the mature approach they took for this process. Well Done!

Immunization for Meningococcal (15 to 19 year olds)

The majority of year ten students were immunized for meningococcal disease in Term 3. If your child is aged between 15 and 19 then the immunization is free this year. The service offered at the school for Year 10 students only. If your student is in a different class or was unable to have the immunization on the two days the nurses were at school then you may take your child to the clinics run by the Murweh shire council. Please call them to confirm dates. We are working hard to get permission for the nurses to immunize other students aged between 15 and 19. Watch this space for more news.

Reading

At Charleville State High School, we have an excellent three-tiered reading plan/focus.

As parents, you can help your students in many aspects:

  1. Model reading to them. Read interesting articles to them and take the time to discuss and value each other’s opinions.
  2. Encourage students regardless of age to read for at least 20 minutes every day.

Attendance

At Charleville State High School, our goal is for all students to attend school 92%. Every term letters are sent to individual families whose child’s attendance in the junior school was less than 80%. If you received a letter, please ensure that your child attends school every day unless there is a valid reason. If attendance does not improve then the next step in the process of reaching the goal of 92% is to send an official Education Queensland letter requesting an interview to discuss why attendance is at such a level.

Student Support Centre

We are very excited to have our Student Support Centre established in term 4. C block will now house our CEC, Mrs Jolene Russell, our YSC, Mrs Jenny Peacock, our SBYHN, Miss Jen Sellin, our Chaplain, Mr Les Penrose as well as our newly appointed Beyond Broncos staff member, Courtney Burns. Students have a large, welcoming area to access the support offered at Charleville State High School.

Year Nine Camp

As I write this newsletter students and teachers are travelling to Brisbane for the Year Nine Camp to Moreton Island 5:00am. Students were quite excited at 5:00 am this morning about the wonderful opportunity organized for them.

Until next time,

All Schools Touch

It has been yet another amazing experience for Charleville State High school students who travelled to Brisbane last week to compete in the Qld All Schools Touch Competition. This is one of the biggest competitions in Australia when it comes to Touch Football with our kids playing against some of the best and giving it their best.

Unfortunately, we returned home without a win for any games but we did manage a draw against two teams. We did return home, however, with a team who are more experienced and committed to the game of Touch football than ever before. The improvements in every game weren’t possible without their teamwork, leadership and never give up attitude they displayed and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

Congratulations to all of you on your efforts at training and at the competition. You made our job as coaches so much easier with your commitment to all aspects of the game.

Congratulations also to Charlie Aitken and Lucy Frousheger who received our players player awards and to Jack Radnedge for the Coaches award.

Farewell to our Year 12 students who are very sad to have just played their last All Schools Competition. Some of these students have been in the team for 5 years and it has been wonderful to see them improve and develop into the skilled and talented touch players they are today.

The support our team has had throughout the year never goes unnoticed and we thank the community members who have attended the training games against the students which was extremely beneficial to our team. To all the community members who attended the trivia night, our community businesses who supported this event and all the parents, teachers and students who helped organise the event, thank you for your support to help get these kids to Brisbane to be a part of this wonderful competition.

And lastly a thank you to Virginia McDonald who as attended 11 of the past 12 years of All Schools trips and helped with meals, organising the students and being wonderful support to the students on the side line of games. This was Virginia’s last time she will be joining us and she will be dearly missed in the future.

Team members: Charley Peacock, Zoe Aspinall, Millie Smith, Lucy Frousheger, Renee Duff, Charlie Aitken, Oliver Aitken, Harry Apinall, Mitchell Walker, Jack Radnedge and Harrison Alick.

Junior Secondary Update

Welcome back to Term 4, and the final term for some of our students as Junior students! This term, being a nine week term means life at school is very busy. This week we saw 30 of our Year 9 students, and three Junior teachers – Miss Goult, Miss Dingle and Mr Baeck off to the Year 9 Camp at Moreton Island. These students thoroughly deserve to celebrate the ending of their junior schooling, and their efforts with fundraising for this experience. We look forward to hearing how the camp goes – keep your eyes out on the Skoolbag Ap for updates and photos! All Year 9 students who did not go on camp, are participating in an exciting program about Life on Mars for this week, where they will participate in a number of activities from investigating life on Mars, to building a space critter, and even building a volcano!

And they are off!

This term also sees the final Transition Day for our future Year 7 students of 2018. This Transition Day will be held on Thursday 26th October, with students meeting at the School Hall. Students will participate in a range of curriculum activities for the entire day. Enrolment interviews will commence in Week 6 of this term, with a final Parent Information Evening occurring Tuesday 14th November. If you are yet to collect an enrolment pack, or know of someone who has a student enrolling next year, please collect one as soon as possible from the Charleville State High School Office.

This term also sees the selection of our Junior Secondary leaders for 2018. We currently have 7 leadership positions available for application – Junior Secondary School Captain, Junior Secondary School Vice-Captain, Alamein Junior House Captain, Kokoda Junior House Captain, Tobruk Junior House Captain, Year 9 Student Rep, Year 8 Student Rep. Applications close Wednesday of Week 2 (11th October). If your student is interested in applying for one of these positions, they need to collect an application form from Mrs Goodingham in the Skills Centre.

Until next time,
Sabrina Goodingham
HOD – Junior Secondary

HPE Update

Term 4 is a busy term for the junior HPE students with them commencing their swimming lessons. Lessons commence in Week 2 of Term 4. Swimming is a compulsory element of the HPE curriculum, and students must participate in all lessons. Students must provide medical certification if they miss two or more consecutive swimming lessons. If you are yet to receive a swimming form, please contact your students HPE teacher. Meanwhile our senior students continue to develop their knowledge in Biomechanics, Figueroa’s Framework, and Healthy Living. It is essential for all our HPE students to participate in all practical and theoretical elements in the course.

This week we see the return of Mrs Lindsay, Mr Jensen and the Touch Football Team, who return from the All Schools Touch tour. Students have had a fantastic time, and have learnt many new skills. We look forward to hearing about all of their stories, and accompanying results.

Good luck to all students in their sporting endeavours this term, and to those in Year 12, enjoy your last ever school comps!

Sabrina Goodingham
HOD – HPE

House Point Update

Congratulations to Kokoda, who were our Term 3 House winners. Kokoda celebrated their win with a game of Barefoot Bowls. This term all houses were close in house points, with the leader changing a number of times. Let’s hope we can keep the competition going this term too.

This term, our first competition commences this week with a 3 day Tug-of-War competition between the houses, with a best of three competition between the females of each house and the males of each house. The winners of each competition will be taking on the staff. I wonder who will win? See below some photos from Day 1’s competition.

A special mention must go to the following students who raised the most points for their houses last term:

Alamein

Kokoda

Tobruk

Senior Student

Tabith Kranz

Joseph Saffy

Michael Russell

Junior Student

Nathyn Jackson

Amber Hinz

John Rivera

So far this year we have had resounding amount of students who have earnt house points for their house. Remember individual house points can be earnt by the following ways.

At Charleville State High School, we want to reward and recognise all the wonderful things and achievements our students make. Please ensure that your student see’s either their house mentor or Mrs Goodingham with evidence to secure their points. Evidence can include a photo, a letter, a certificate, or even a ribbon. If in doubt about whether what you have done has earned points please see Mrs Goodingham to discuss the possibility

It is never too late to let us know what excellent things you have completed or achieved!

For any questions concerning the house point system please feel free to contact Mrs Sabrina Goodingham on sgood192@eq.edu.au.

Year 8 Humanities News

This term in Year 8 Humanities, students will be studying Australian Law. Throughout this term of study, students will be investigating how Australian laws are created, what influences the creation of laws in Australia, and what Australian citizens can do to have their say in the law making process. Students will examine laws at a local, state and federal level and consider different perspectives in relation to these laws.

The exam for this topic will take place at the beginning of Week 8. While students will be given the opportunity to revise for this exam in class, it is important that students are reviewing what has been learnt in class at home from an early stage. This will not only reduce stress during assessment time, but also help students identify what they do and do not understand, so any questions can be clarified ell before the exam date.

As I teacher of this subject, I am eager to see the knowledge and understanding of these young adults grow throughout this term. I hope that by the end of the unit, students will be able to develop informed perspectives regarding laws in Australia and have a greater understanding of their place in the law making process both now and in the future as adults.

Tug-Of-War

This week, we are set to witness the school houses battle it out for the title of Tug-of-War champions. Over a 3-day period, teams of 10 will be competing against their rival houses during lunch breaks from Monday to Wednesday. Each house will be putting forward both a male and female team, who will ultimately put their strength to the test in attempting to gain points for their house. This is one of many activities that has been run by the school, as part of the inter-house competition this year. Finals are set to be held on Wednesday the 11th October during first break. Let the battle begin!
