School Student Broadband Initiative
Australian Government providing students with free home internet for one year!
To boost educational opportunities and narrow the digital divide, families without home internet. I encourage families to apply for the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI). As a rural school this application process is being offered to us before other urban schools in Queensland. Access to internet at home can support your children to build their digital skills and participate in a world that is more reliant on digital technology.
The Australian Government is supporting the National Broadband Network (NBN) to implement the SSBI to provide free home internet for one year for up to 30,000 unconnected families across Australia with school aged students.
To be eligible for SSBI, a family must:
- Have a child living at home that is enrolled in a Queensland state school in 2023.
- Not have an active internet service at home. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
- Be referred by a nominating organisation such as the Department of Education (the department).
- Agree their child has access to a device and has the digital skills to use the internet safely or will be supervised.
- Live in a premises that can access the NBN via a standard connection – this will be checked by NBN.
Referral through the department
The department is pleased to support the nomination of families for the SSBI. If you would like to apply for the SSBI please contact our administration team on 4656 8888 or email admin@charlevilleshs.eq.edu.au for an application (online or paper form) and further information about the initiative. Paper applications will be forwarded to the department by the admin team. Applications must be submitted by 1 September 2023.
English Focus
English is the core to all learning and essential for the next step whether a student’s pathway is further study or employment.
This semester a focus on English for grades 7-10 has been reflected in students having four lessons a week. The aim is to provide extra time for students to demonstrate their learning in these important learning areas supported by teachers and where possible teacher aides. The extra lesson replaces one lesson of PPP.
NAIDOC Celebrations
I wish to acknowledge our indigenous students and school captains who led the opening Ceremony for NAIDOC week. They confidently delivered a great history lesson including interviews with Local Elders. A huge thank you to our Elders Carol Lawton, Barb Olsen, Ray Robinson, Johnny Maris and Brian McLean who participated in the filming.
Well done Emerson, Eva, Jordan, Angus, Rory, Lincoln, Trish, Tom, Ruby and Ashley.
Facilities update
Our GP room upgrade in the administration block has been completed and currently being furnished for full operation. Appointments are available for all Charleville State High School students. Please contact our administration team to make an appointment. Parents must be present for all year seven and eight student’s appointments. It is strongly encouraged that parents are also present for our older students but not compulsory. Please contact our office on 4656 8888 to book an appointment.
Unfortunately, the C-Block upgrade completion has been delayed till the 31st of August. I am very much looking forward to this facility being completed to allow our student wellbeing team (listed below) to move back in together and support our students from one point in this upgraded centre.

Senior School News
Welcome back to the start of term 3, and the beginning of a new school semester. I hope you all had a nice and relaxing break and are ready for what will be another busy semester 2!
Year 11 and 12 meetings
Over the next fortnight, I will be contacting year 11 and 12 parents to make an appointment to discuss their students’ pathway option as we continue to take a proactive approach in supporting student success. Along with these parent meetings, I will be also making appointments for year 11 and 12 students to discuss their current progress as well as start working through QTAC Applications and/or scholarships for our year 12s. My door is always open to students and parents who would like to discuss student pathways and academic progress, particularly year 12 students and parents in this final semester. Please contact the school if you’d like to make an appointment to see me or by emailing myself on sxand9@eq.edu.au.
Year 12 QTAC Digital Guides to University available now!
QTAC have made available their annual year 12 university guides for 2023. These can be accessed for all current year 12 students at:
The objective of the QTAC Guide is to provide current year 12 students aspiring to move onto university next year an overview of all courses available to study (along with helpful information relating to the ATAR, admission and scholarships) across Queensland Universities.
Yr10 QTAC Digital Guides to career pathways and university available now!
QTAC have also made available the Career Pathways and university guide for current year 10 students. This guide provides students currently in year 10 information relating to general information regarding entry into university courses in 2026. You can find this guide online here:
My final message for the fortnight and one that I will continue to reiterate with students is the mantra of starting off strong! What this looks like is up to each individual student, however students, particularly our year 12 students, should reflect on what worked and what didn’t in semester one to make a more informed choice on how they tackle semester 2. These decisions made through reflection could mean the difference between having the ATAR score to be accepted into a particular university subject or completing a certificate course – all having impacts on the future. I encourage students to reflect and decide what they can do in semester 2 to ensure their success, not just whilst studying and in-class but for their futures.

White Card Course
Last term on the 17th & 24th May, prompted by a conversation with a parent, I went forward and organised an online White Card course at school, as many students required a white card to participate in work experience. After much research and enquires, I got approval to engage INSCOPE Training who delivered the online course for 22 of our students from years 9-12. The cost to students was $79 per student to complete the one-day course.
A white card enables you to work and enter construction sites and is important for many trades. Once you have a white card you have it for life. All 22 students passed the course and received their certificate and white card by mail. A lot of administration work involved to organise but a very worthwhile endeavour for our students.
Yr10 Work Experience
Every year in week 10 of term 2 is Year 10 work experience week. During the term, I had numerous sessions with year 10’s explaining the purpose and value of work experience and how to go about finding a placement in a workplace of interest to them. Some knew instantly where they wanted to do work experience, others took a bit longer to find something, others needed help in finding a placement, but we got there in the end. The work placements this year were wide and varied, everything including: Healthcare, Veterinarian, Electrical; Hospitality; Tourism; Teaching; Fitness; Radio/Media; Mechanics; Earthworks; Legal/Solicitor.
Overall, 18 students participated from the year 10 cohort, with some doing either Shearing Camp or Deadly Recruits camp the same week. Well done to all year 10’s this year who participated in the various programs.
Year 10 Work Experience is a valuable part of the year 10 curriculum, giving students the opportunity to get a taste for working life and also an experience in an occupation or career they may be interested in beyond school. It also helps when making decisions about subject selection in year 12 and VET Pathways.
A massive thankyou to all the local employers and department staff who were willing to give our year 10’s a placement this year and allowing them to experience different work places.

Deadly Recruits
Last term Cruze, Matthew & Deacon attended Deadly Recruits Camp at Tinnenburra Station accompanied by our CEC Lavina Martin.
Arriving at camp the students didn’t know what to expect, they were challenged on their Leadership, Fitness, Behaviour, Teamwork along with Strength, Resilience and Courage. On camp all the students participated in lessons by making their own song, painting a banner for Community Day, showing off their Rewards (Push-Ups).
This camp is a good opportunity for students who are wanting to be recruited in the Defence Force, Navy, Air Force and Army.
Lavina couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and the support they showed for one another throughout a challenging week. The respect and mateship they showed for each other - Lavina knew the team would pull through.

Bina
Blue Light Shearing Camp
Term 2 Week 10 we had 7 students attend the Blue Light Shearing Camp, which was held at Warrego Park, Wyandra.
There were 11 students from Roma, St George and Tara that also attended the camp. The week consisted of students learning to crutch, shear and do wool-handling, also yard work, pressing and grinding.
All students had a great week all working as a team and enjoying Deb’s cooking. They are looking forward to Term 3, Camp in Week 10.
Beyond Broncos
This term has been a busy one we have had our Beyond Bronco’s Workshop on the 24th May. We had our ambassadors Justin Hodges and Berryl Friday and our special guest Auntie Pat Fraser, who shared her journey from childhood to now. Our students really enjoyed her story. Our theme was focused on Our Elders, we did some activities around What makes a Deadly Leader, Respecting our Elders. The girls focused on Leadership and what it means to be a Leader. It was a fun filled morning with lots of laughs.
One of our Beyond Broncos students Summer Simpson was chosen to paint Kurt Capewell’s boots for the Indigenous Round 2023, she did an amazing job on the boots.
We also attended a Leadership Camp on the 4th to the 7th July, with two of our students Emmerson (Indigenous Ambassador) and Tiffany. The camp was held at Cromwell College in Brisbane. About 80 students from all of the Beyond Bronco’s programs in Queensland attended the camp, the focus being Deadly Leaders. We also had a tour of the Bronco’s Football Club and met up with some of the players, Kurt Capewell and Jordon Riki, The State Library (First Nations Sector) which was amazing and we also visited the Tafe. As well as many fun activities the girls made lots of new friendships along the way.
Unfortunately, this will be my last article in the newsletter as Laurie and I will be heading off to Palm Island at the end of the month. I wish all of our Beyond Bronco Girls a great rest of the year I will miss each and every one of you …

Fire Drum Competition
During the school holidays, Will, Tyler and Jhett from Charleville High School actively took part in the firedrum competition held at the Half Way Shindig. Despite not winning, the collaborative effort between the students and teachers—Shane Needer, Ed Hansen, and Olivia Taylor—highlighted the school's dedication to nurturing practical skills and creativity through its manual arts program. Olivia Taylor, one of the teachers involved, found joy in engaging with the community and visitors, utilizing the opportunity to showcase the outstanding work conducted at Charleville High School.
The impact of the students' involvement extended beyond the competition itself. Other students from different schools expressed admiration for Charleville High School's manual arts program, expressing their desire to have a similar program in their own schools. This revelation emphasizes the importance of providing students with hands-on learning experiences, as it not only enhances their practical skills but also instils a sense of accomplishment and pride in their achievements.
