Principal Report

It has been wonderful to welcome our students, staff and families back through the school gates in week 1.
Student Leadership
It has been an honour to be part of the recent leadership interviews and speeches as part of the selection process for our 2026 Student Leadership Team. I want to commend students on their commitment to the process and the time and effort they have put into their interview preparation and speeches.
We will be announcing the 2026 Student Leaders at our upcoming Awards Evening.

Attendance
School absenteeism and truancy can impact significantly on students' learning and wellbeing.
Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance is associated, on average, with higher student achievement. Additionally, attending school every day helps children to build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.
Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on all school days unless there is a reasonable excuse.
We have unfortunately seen an increase in ‘unexplained absence’ in recent weeks. If your child has been absent for school, please ensure you have contacted the school regarding the reason for absence. Students with current unexplained absence, will receive a letter home from their respective Deputy requesting information regarding their absence.

Charleville SHS Tuckshop Project
In recently months, in partnership with the Charleville Hospital (Queensland Health) we have had 2 incredible dietician students working with our school to review our tuckshop menu. During this time, they have introduced new recipes to the tuckshop and introduced new menu items.
On Wednesday 8th October, the students presented their findings and outcomes at our P&C Meeting. A special mention must also go to Mrs Mel Doolan – our School Based Youth Health Nurse and Brittany Doneman – our Tuckshop Convenor, both played pivotal roles in the roll out of this project.
We very much look forward to sharing a revised menu with the CSHS community soon.

JCE Update
As part of our Junior Certificate of Education for all Year 9 students, two significant events are happening in the next fortnight:
- On Wednesday, 15th October, our year 9 students will set academic, effort and attendance goals for term 4 after analysing their reports from term 3. In education, this known as self-reported grades and the effect size of this is 1.33. This effect size indicates that self-reported grades have a significant impact on student achievement, making them a highly effective activity in schools. Already, we have seen significant improvement with students who have set their own goals. The research from Professor John Hattie has shown that encouraging students to set and reflect on their own goals fosters metacognition and deeper understanding, which are crucial for academic success.
- On Wednesday, 22nd October, your young person will select subjects for Year 10 2026. Selecting subjects that we are interested in and that map to our future pathway is important in maintaining engagement and achieving academic success in school.
We are respectful – communicating with every member of our school community
Charleville SHS is a Positive Behaviour for Learning School and our focus for the last term has been one of our four W’s – we are respectful.
On Friday, October 10th, I spoke to every junior class about the importance of speaking to each other, about each other and about ourselves respectfully and responsibly. This includes teachers, other members of staff and visitors to our school community.
At the beginning of term 4, some of our teaching staff have been referred to by names like “bro” or “mate”. Some of it has become targeted towards specific members of our teaching team and it is not appropriate or respectful.
There are three main ways that students can address staff:
- By name – Mr Smith, Miss Jones
- By title – sir or miss. That may sound old-fashioned, but it works
- By greeting – hello, good morning, not using name or title.
Of course, this works both ways – students and another other members of our school community will be addressed respectfully by every member of staff at school:
- By name – good morning John, excuse me Mary
- By surname
I welcome any communication to jscan28@eq.edu.au with any feedback or observations about this approach, promoting and reinforcing respectful communication in school and beyond the school gates.

Senior School – Term 4 Welcome
Welcome back to Term 4! Our focus is finishing well, arriving every day in full uniform (school shirt and plain black bottoms), bringing the right equipment and clothing for lunchtime football and your classes, and treating each class like a workplace: on time, prepared and respectful.
We’re also emphasising positive language. “School talk” means courteous, professional language that helps everyone learn; “home talk” can be more casual—but it doesn’t belong in classrooms or on the school grounds.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep language respectful, build great habits, and set students up for success beyond school.
Year 10
Year 10 students are finalising their SET-P Plans and preparing for Week 5 exams. SET-P Planning helps students choose subjects that align with their strengths and pathways, reducing changes later that can impact QCE progress. Please encourage strong effort in class, steady revision at home, and smart choices around time management, sleep and device use. These habits matter now—and even more in senior school.
Year 11
Year 11 students are preparing for mock external exams, giving a realistic practice run and building confidence for 2026. Later this term we’ll begin Senior Jersey planning (design ideas, names and sizing) and brainstorm fundraising for next year.
We’re also seeking volunteers to support upcoming events:
- Year 12 Formal helpers (serving, clearing, can collection): a note will go home—please return it by the end of Week 6 so we can confirm rosters.
- Healthy Ageing Seniors Week High Tea: a note goes home this week—please return by Thursday 3:00 pm (Week 2).
Volunteering is a fantastic way to build leadership, teamwork and service.
Year 12
It’s nearly here—two school weeks to go, and about six weeks until the Formal and Graduation! Please continue completing all course and certificate requirements to secure your QCE and Graduation eligibility.
Key dates
- Formal: Wednesday 19 November – tickets on sale this week. Each graduate may purchase six guest tickets plus their own. All school fees must be paid in full prior to purchasing formal tickets. Please include any dietary requirements when purchasing.
- Graduation: Friday 21 November, 9:00 am in the school hall. Students must attend in full school uniform.
As momentum builds, safety and decision-making matter more than ever. Please look after yourselves and one another, keep routines steady, communicate respectfully, and ask for help early. We’re incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved—and excited for what’s ahead.
PPP – Senior School
PPP continues this term with a strong focus on certificates and real-world skills. Regular attendance ensures students complete required tasks and stay on track for QCE.
Year 10
- Finalising the Careers Education Short Course (contributes to QCE points).
- Respectful Relationships activities that build communication, help-seeking and leadership.
Years 11 & 12
- Progressing the Financial Services (FNS) Certificate—budgeting, saving, credit, debt, consumer rights and avoiding scams.
- Guest speakers will enrich learning with practical pathways and post-school advice.
Year 11
- Senior Jersey preparation and fundraising ideas for 2026.
Year 12
- Finalising Graduation and Formal preparation while completing certification requirements.
Thank you for your ongoing support—together we can make Term 4 a positive, productive finish for all our senior students.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Our focus continues: “We are respectful – speak respectfully to everyone, every lesson, every day.” As we settle back into routine, we’re reminding students that respectful language and behaviour create calm classrooms where everyone can succeed. That includes no abusive language, staying on task, and taking responsibility for learning so others can reach their potential. It’s another way of practising “school talk” (professional and courteous) instead of “home talk” (casual and sometimes unfiltered).

PBL – Term 3 Rewards
Congratulations to all students who attended our Term 3 Rewards Day! It was brilliant to see so many of you fully engaged across a wide range of student-selected workshops and activities, including welding, fishing, volleyball, golf, paint-and-sip, arts & crafts, and VR experiences.
Throughout the day, students consistently demonstrated our 4Ws—We are Learners, Safe, Responsible and Respectful—by participating enthusiastically, following instructions, supporting peers, and representing Charleville SHS with pride.
Well done to everyone involved!
Bullying No Way Day

Live School Trial
This term we launched Live School—a simple, engaging way to recognise positive behaviour. Over 100 students have returned consent and are already earning points they can view in their Live School account, including which teacher awarded the points and why. Each point aligns to a specific school expectation (e.g., respectful language, being prepared), helping students see exactly what success looks like.
- Points contribute to Starbucks Dollars for the PBL Auction
- We can also track House points, making it easier to run friendly competitions and rewards
- Consent notes have been emailed and sent home; follow-up notes have also gone out
If you have questions or need another copy of the note, please contact Miss Amiee Dolman at adolm0@eq.edu.au. We’d love to see more students join the trial.
