Marker Student Project
As some families would be aware, the Charleville State High School Leadership Team have each selected a student from Charleville SHS to be a ‘marker student’. The purpose of this project is to provide targeted support and intervention to enhance student academic outcomes in English, Maths and Science.
Students are selected based on specific criteria (ie: attendance, effort, behaviour and current level of achievement). The student will be a ‘marker student’ for a minimum of a term. We look forward to measuring our success with the process and selecting our next group of students in Term 4.
Attendance
As a school we are continuously looking for opportunities to improve academic outcomes for our students. One of the barriers for student improvement in learning is lack of attendance. When speaking with some students about their reason for absence/signing out early, the following ‘reasons’ have been shared with us.
Get eyelashes done | Don’t want to do that class |
Stay home to play with new puppy | Stay home because it’s my birthday |
Have nails done | Don’t like PPP |
Unfortunately, days of learning cannot be replaced. Whilst we do attempt to minimise the impacts of absence by emailing work to students for extended justified absence, teaching cannot be ‘sent’. The above are not a justified absence in accordance with our roll marking protocols.
Please consider the educational impacts of your child arriving late, signing out early or missing days of learning before you approve it.
ATAR – Parent information evening
Thank you to all parents and carers for your attendance and engagement at our recent ATAR information session.
Charleville State High School is proud of our commitment to learning outcomes and post school transitions for our senior students, with 100% of graduating students achieving their QCE/QCIA over the last three years. This is an achievement we continue to celebrate and will work tirelessly to uphold in the years ahead.
Athletics Carnival – 2025
Thank you to everyone who made the 2025 Charleville State High School Athletics Carnival a success. Your sportsmanship, teamwork, and commitment truly shone. We celebrate not only the victories, but the unity, spirit, and determination shown by all. Congratulations to every participant, supporter, and volunteer who contributed to this fantastic event.
It is important for me to remind families that events such as sports carnivals, celebrations and commemorations are key school events that contribute to the culture of our school and our values. We notice significant declines in our school attendance on a number of these events which unfortunately detracts from the day and our celebrations. I encourage all students to participate in the day, even if that does not involve all events.
Thank you for your continued support.
Warm regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo

What we’ve done: Junior Secondary Student Support Team
The Junior Support team are working with a smaller group of students in years 7, 8 and 9 to support students to achieve a C in their English, Maths and Science subjects.
This term, the team are focusing on supporting students whose attendance is at 85% or higher to provide that next lift to get to a passing grade in their subjects.
What does it look like?
- Academic goalsetting, where students reflect on what went well and things to focus on in the classroom.
- A bespoke assessment calendar and strategies to manage assessment submission dates.
- Connecting with teachers and homework club to work consistently through the term to achieve success.
Kudos to Brooke Sherrington, Dani Stickler, Gina Walker and Kerrie Pheby for their work on a targeted approach for each of these students.
I look forward to celebrating the success that this targeted approach has with the students and families on an individual basis later this term.
Please email jscan28@eq.edu.au if you would like to find out more about this level of support for your young person.
What we’re doing:
- Maintaining consistency in our expectations with a no-opt-out approach for students
- Delivering targeted year 9 Maths support Wednesday period 4
- Recognising the work of the wider student support team: CEC Bina Martin, Chappy Les Penrose, Youth Support Coordinator Katie McLeod, Beyond the Broncos Di Erin Williams, School Based Youth Health Nurse Mel Doolan, Social Worker Mark Vaggs and Guidance Officer Kerrie Pheby with the work they are doing with students who need the support most

- Beginning to think about Student Leaders in 2026, and what their roles will be in the school
- Partnering with Primary Feeder Schools to build on the excellent transition work of Amy Roughan and Narelle Webb for Year 7 2026. I am meeting with the Principal of Morven State School, Hayley Rolfe, to support the social, emotional and academic transition to Charleville SHS for two students – the first time in two years that students are continuing their education at our school! It is exciting.
Dates around the corner:
- The Year 7-10 Curriculum Overviews were emailed to parents and carers on Friday, July 25th – what seems like a long time ago. I encourage you to look at these dates with your young person.
- Year 9 Peer Skills is taking place on Tuesday 16th September and Wednesday 17th September, week 10 for all our Year 9 students. Kudos to Katie McLeod and Mel Doolan for their design and delivery of what will be an excellent program.

Senior School Update
Year 10
In the coming weeks, Year 10 students will complete their SET Planning and begin preparing for senior subjects. Now is the perfect time to establish strong study habits—consistent routines set students up for success in Years 11 and 12. They will continue to work through their Careers Short Course – this will help support their decisions in SET-Planning and get them thinking of their next steps. This will be completed by the end of the year.
Years 11 & 12
Our senior students are gearing up for final assessments and exams. Year 11s are encouraged to build effective study habits now to ensure a smooth transition into their final year. Year 12s—stay focused and keep going; you’re close to the finish line and every effort counts. Formal planning will be finalised this term, and Year 11 students will have the opportunity to assist at the November formal. During PPP, both Year 11 and 12 cohorts will continue the Certificate of Financial Services program. Attendance is essential, as this course develops practical skills in budgeting, saving, debt and credit—and contributes an easy four QCE points. We will also host guest speakers from Services Australia, Golden West, and Murweh Shire Council during PPP this term.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Week 6-9 focus:
“We are respectful learners – we will actively participate to allow others to achieve.”
For parents, this means we are teaching students to be on time and prepared, listen and follow instructions the first time, contribute positively in class, complete set tasks, and allow others to learn without interruption. We’ll reinforce this through PPP lessons, clear classroom routines, and recognition via LiveSchool points linked to this expectation.

You can support this at home by encouraging regular attendance, checking uniform and equipment each morning, and chatting with your child about one practical way they’ll “actively participate” each day (e.g. asking a relevant question, staying on task, helping a peer). Praising LiveSchool positives you see come through also strengthens the message.
Planning is underway for our Term 3 Rewards Trip and student-selected workshops in Week 10. To be eligible for off-site rewards, students must meet attendance benchmarks, follow the uniform policy, and demonstrate expected behaviour aligned to our focus. Students should continue handing in their Starbucks to support access to workshops. We’re also preparing for our 2025 Auction—watch this space for a preview of the fantastic items on offer.
LiveSchool Trial
This semester, Charleville SHS will trial LiveSchool, an engaging platform that makes it easy to recognise and track positive behaviour. Students can log in to see their points, which teachers awarded them points, and why. Each point is tagged to a specific school expectation and recorded in the student’s individual account. Points will convert to Starbucks Dollars for the Auction. We are also exploring a rewards café/shop that will operate through the LiveSchool system, and LiveSchool will help track house points to support competitions and rewards. Consent notes have been sent home with students in Years 8–12 and also emailed to families. If you’re happy for your student to participate, please return the form as soon as possible (a reminder email has been sent to families who have not yet returned their note). For questions, please contact Miss Amiee Dolman at adolm0@eq.edu.au.

Year 8 Geography
During week 3 the year 8 Geography students competed in a class versus class debate. Their topic was on the liveability of Megacities with students making arguments for the following characteristics: political, environmental, social, economic and cultural.
They worked on their arguments for a week both in class and for homework before battling it out in class in front of a panel.
Miss Stickler's class took out the prize which was a $5 tuckshop voucher to each participating student.
Well done students, you did your cohort very proud!
Miss Stickler

Shadow Puppetry
Master Sumardi, a 9th generation Dalang (puppet master) visited for a Wayung Kulit performance and workshop with the yr7 and 8 students. Aimed to deepen understanding of traditional performance art and storytelling from Indonesia.

Year 10 Work Experience
The year 10 work experience program was rolled out again last term in Week 10 with 29 students undertaking a 1-week block from the 23rd-27th June.
There was a diverse range of placements thanks to the support of local businesses who were willing to host students for the week.
Work Experience is a fantastic way for students to experience and get exposure to a particular workplace, industry or career pathway they are interested in. Those year 10’s who chose to do work experience gained valuable insight during the week.
In the lead up to work experience week, I held one on one sessions with each student to finish their resumes and cover letters and assisted them to email employers to request a work experience placement. These are valuable skills students need as they think about work and careers post school.
A massive thank you once again to our local businesses for giving our students an opportunity to do a work placement and gain the experience, some businesses took more than one student which is very appreciated.
Thanks to the following businesses & organisations:
SWHHS Charleville Hospital | Youngs Welding Works | Charleville Vet Surgery |
South West Tech | South West Nissan & Ford | Morven Hotel Motel |
Murweh Shire Council | IGA Charleville | Switched on Electrical |
Fitstop Charleville | The Milk Bar | C&K Kindergarten |
Lesdale Quarry | Wired Wright Electrical | St. Marys School |
Charleville State School | Rusty Lane | CRE Refrigeration & Electrical |
4RRFM | Dan Freiberg Plumbing | Tas Mini Motors |

Two year 10 students doing School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships Jade & Lucas, chose their current workplaces to do their week block.

Careers Tour Thankyou
Charleville State High School presented certificates of appreciation to Tony Martin RESQ Charleville for their generous funding contribution and Jennifer Peacock HOPE Program for sourcing funding with SQRH and contributing to the planning for the Seniors Careers Tour held earlier this term.
The funding paid for a coach, accommodation and most meals bringing the cost to students to a minimum. The Careers Tour was a huge success taking 23 Students from Charleville SHS and 3 Students from Cunnamulla State School on an educational tour including Roma Toowoomba & Gatton gaining exposure to many diverse industries, Toowoomba Careers Expo, Uni’s and TAFE campuses.
The purpose was to broaden students’ horizons when thinking about future careers and pathways. Thanks again RESQ & HOPE program & SQRH for making it a reality and success.

Bullying No Way Week @ CSHS
In week five, staff, students and community members recognised Bullying No Way Week – a time to reflect on the role that everyone plays in preventing bullying behaviours.
The theme for 2025 was Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up, and CSHS is continuing this focus throughout our school year within our PBL program. It is important to note that we all play a part in supporting our students, school staff and community, by promoting safe and inclusive environments where we feel supported, respected, and have our voices heard and valued. Challenge yourself to ask, what can I, personally, do to Be Bold, Be Kind, and Speak Up?
Each day during week 5, students participated in discussions and activities based around daily focus areas, with prizes issued for both individuals and class groups – huge congratulations and thank you to all who participated! Keep an eye out on Facebook and in the next newsletter for a summary of students’ fabulous and thoughtful responses to our daily quiz questions. Prizes included specially designed and themed school polo shirts and bucket hats, which will be able to be worn to school as uniform.
We are also building a school pledge wall – students, staff, families, external agencies, and community members are all most welcome to take part. If you would like to join us in pledging our commitment to Be Bold, Be Kind, and Speak up against bullying, it’s not too late - please complete a pledge form at the school office or contact YSC Katie McLeod to get involved and show your support.

Preventing bullying – information for families
At Charleville State High School, we believe that bullying has no place. Each year, our school is also proud to participate in the Bullying No Way: National week of action.
By working collaboratively within our school and community, we can collectively help reduce bullying. Families play an important role in helping children understand bullying and know how to respond to it.
If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Questions you could ask:
- What do you think bullying is?
- Have you seen it? How did you feel?
- Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
- As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
- Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
- Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?
Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.
Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.
By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.

Medicare Mental Health

Medicare Mental Health is a free and confidential support service funded by the Australian Government.
What is Medicare Mental Health in Western Queensland?
The Western Queensland (WQ) Medicare Mental Health (formerly Head to Health) phone service provides a free, easily accessible entry point into and between community mental health services, including WQPHN commissioned service providers, headspace, and other community-based services, such as those provided by state jurisdictions, NGOs, and private providers.
Anyone of any age, including children, young people and older adults, families and carers, can access Medicare Mental Health to support or improve their sense of wellbeing and/or connection to local mental and general health supports. Visit the website www.medicarementalhealth.gov.au for a list of digital mental health services available.
How does Medicare Mental Health Work?
When someone contacts the Medicare Mental Health telephone line (1800 595 212) they will be asked to enter their postcode, and for South West, Central West and North West Queensland, it will be routed to the WQPHN’s Medicare Mental Health Service Provider, RHealth (visit www.rhealth.com.au for more information).
A trained worker will go through the Initial Assessment and Referral Guidance and Decision Support Tool (IAR-DST) with a consumer or work with the caller to identify useful pathways to needed support. The IAR-DST is a holistic decision-making framework that assists support workers and clinicians in matching consumers with the most appropriate mental health services for their needs.
Together, the Mental Health phone service and website provide a simple starting point to find mental health and wellbeing information, support and services.
