From the Principal

As we conclude Semester 1, I’m filled with pride as I reflect on the remarkable progress we’ve made together. This term has been defined by renewed focus on learning, growing momentum in Version 9 Curriculum Implementation, and a shared commitment to enhancing attendance. I’m excited to share and celebrate some of the successes we’ve achieved as a school community.
Rising Attendance, Rising Potential
One of the most encouraging developments this semester has been our increase in student attendance. More students are arriving on time, every day, ready to learn. This is a reflection of how much our students value being here, supported by families who understand that consistent attendance lays the foundation for academic success and lifelong habits.
Thank you for helping us build that culture of showing up, striving, and staying connected.
A Stronger Culture of Learning
We are also seeing a shift in the way students are engaging with their learning. Classrooms are increasingly calm, supportive and engaging. Whether it's through focused class discussions, students taking ownership of their learning, or enhanced engagement with homework club and assessment, our school culture is growing stronger every day.
Staff have worked intentionally to create environments that are both welcoming and challenging—and our students are rising to meet those expectations. I acknowledge that we still have further improvements to make, it is exciting to see our successes so far.
School & Parent Partnerships
This term has seen the election of a new P&C Executive Committee. Our committee and broader membership are working together to enhance our school and the opportunities that we can create through our positive and proactive partnership.
President – Tegan Russell
Vice President – Jackie Latchman
Treasurer – Shane Horrocks
Secretary – Tamara Heinemann
As a P&C we will be engaging in a comprehensive review of our tuckshop and look at opportunities to continue fundraising to support camps, excursions and enhanced facilities for our students.
Looking Ahead
This semester’s success is not the finish line—it’s our launching pad. In Semester 2, we will continue to build on these gains, with new opportunities for learning, refreshed classroom furniture in selected classrooms, the opening of Phase 2 of C Block and an ongoing recognition for those students who are committed to learning and improvement.
As always, we are committed to working in partnership with you—our families—to support every student in achieving their personal best.
Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and belief in the power of education. Together, we’re shaping a school culture where every student belongs, every day counts, and learning is at the heart of everything we do.
Wishing you all a restful and safe break.
Warm regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo

Learning Snapshot: NAPLAN successes
Last week, we received the provisional NAPLAN results for students. There are several success stories to share and celebrate:
Year 7 student performance was truly exceptional. The 2025 Year 7 students achieved:
- The highest average score in Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Writing in the last ten years
- Equal highest scores in reading and numeracy in the last decade
- Three students achieved exceeding in writing
- Four students achieved exceeding in reading
- Four students achieved exceeding in spelling
- Four students achieved exceeding in grammar and punctuation
- Six students out of twenty-four achieved strong or exceeding in all five domains – a phenomenal achievement.
This is a testament to the work in feeder primary schools and the students’ engagement at the beginning of the year.
Year 9 student performance is very pleasing, considering the improvements students have made in the last two years:
- 59% of students improved on their year 7 score in writing
- 61% of students improved on their year 7 score in reading
- 63% of students improved on their year 7 score in numeracy.
It reflects a dedication to learning for every student and teacher. The sky is truly the limit.
Transition Year 6 into Year 7 2026
Transition to, through and beyond high school is one of 5 priorities communicated to me as part of a recent Junior Secondary Community of Practice at Toowoomba by our Regional Director.
Part of the student successes in NAPLAN, in classrooms, sports facilities and the general communities is down to a student-centred transition program. The broader students support team, and I are currently reviewing the transition program, driven by these core principles and philosophies:
- Student-Centred: Transition processes focus on the academic, emotional, and social needs of students
- Inclusive and Collaborative: All stakeholders including students, families, primary schools, and external agencies are partners in transition
- Planned and Structured: Transitions are supported by clear timelines, communication, and activities that build readiness and resilience
- Data-Informed: Transitions are supported by data sharing and the analysis of student information including learning progress, support needs and goals to meet the needs of every young person
- Aligned with Policy: This policy aligns with Department of Education guidelines including:
- K-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (November 2024)
- Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Senior Education and Training (SET) planning
- Inclusive Education Policy
- Equity and Excellence: State Schools Improvement Strategy, realising the potential of every student.
Beginning next term, the year 6 into 7 structured transition program will involve the following events, culminating in an orientation week in January 2026, emphasising teamwork, collaboration and a focus on learning:
- Partnering with feeder primary schools to share academic and wellbeing data
- Feeder primary school visits, observing classes and interacting with teachers planning/moderation
- Parent/carer meet and greets and information evenings at each of the feeder primary schools
- Early identification and support for students with a disability, additional learning needs and/or vulnerable students
- School Tours with the Principal and student support team
- Taster lessons and diagnostic testing.
Please reach out to me on jscan28@eq.edu.au with any feedback on the transition to Charleville State High School for 2026.

Senior School Update
As we reach the end of Semester 1, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of our senior students. Year 11 and 12 students have now completed the majority of their assessments for the year. As we move into the second half of 2025, we encourage all students to maintain their strong work ethic and continue building positive study habits.
We would also like to commend our Year 11 and 12 students for the noticeable improvement in behaviour across the semester. It has been encouraging to see many of our senior students demonstrating our school values and striving for academic success. We look forward to seeing continued growth in both behaviour and achievement in Semester 2.
Work Experience
Our Year 10 students are currently out on work experience, gaining valuable insight into their chosen career paths. We wish them all the best as they take on this exciting opportunity.

PBL Highlights
In Week 7, we celebrated our PPP Rewards with a sausage sizzle and teacher vs student challenges in trivia and volleyball. It was great to see so many students getting involved and showing school spirit. Congratulations to our teachers who took home the win in trivia!
In Week 9, we held our major PBL rewards day. This term’s event featured a variety of engaging workshops where students had the chance to try something new or build on existing skills.
It was fantastic to see such high levels of participation, and we’re proud of the many students who consistently upheld our 4W expectations throughout the term.
Stay tuned for more exciting PBL opportunities and rewards in Semester 2!

Senior Sport & Recreation
Thank you, Charleville Fitstop, for helping our Senior Sport & Recreation students as part of our fitness unit. The students really benefited from your knowledge and guidance.

Certificate II in Health Services
Since completing their Certificate II in Health Services in 2024, Kimberley and Jade from are working towards a pathway in nursing with expert guidance and support from School Based Youth Health Nurse Melissa Doolan and Industry Liaison Officer Angie Walton.
Both girls are in year 11 this year and are in the process of securing school-based traineeships in their respective health fields to commence a Certificate III in Health Services in Semester Two through the Charleville Hospital.
Thanks to the Youth Support Coordinator initiative, Youth Support Coordinator Katie McLeod was also able to assist both young ladies to attain the mandatory requirements for their traineeships. Over the past 12 months, both Jade and Kimberley have shown increased dedication and effort and have worked hard to improve their attendance and engagement in collaboration with school support and teaching staff. Both young ladies are now thriving and are maximising their opportunities for future success with increased confidence, skills and a positive mindset. Congratulations girls!

Year 8 supporting their team

Readers Cup
Students from years 7 and 8 formed two teams to compete via Teams against the highly competitive Far North Queensland Region. Competing against over 20 teams their nerves were high, but they’d also worked so hard to get them to this point and that confidence came through in the end.
Results:
Charleville 1 – 7th
Charleville 2 – 12th
A massive thank you to:
- the HOPE program for catering the event and fuelling our student’s competitive nature with a range of savoury and sweet snacks
- the school P&C for paying for registrations and purchasing some of the books
- The Charleville Library for loaning our teams some of the books and generously giving our students a giftpack to fuel their reading
- Mel Doolan the school nurse for bringing up the idea, helping with the logistics of the day and spreading the word!
And finally, our readers! They represented Charleville SHS with pride today. They were passionate, competitive and tried their best.

Year 10 Hospitality – The Great Bake Sale
On Tuesday of week 8, year 10 Hospitality students finalised their semester event – a Bake Sale for school staff.
Students worked over the semester to trial and evaluate a wide variety of both sweet and savoury options, including those suitable for our gluten and dairy intolerant clients.
The day went exceptionally well, with students really working hard – individually and as part of a team - to produce high quality goods, which were then packaged and delivered to hungry mouths during first break.
Congratulations to all students involved – they all did an amazing job and have impressed so many staff members. I am really looking forward to semester 2, when another event will occur, this time for both staff and other students. I am sure it will be just as successful as this one (maybe even more so!).
Thanks to the multitude of staff who were more than happy to support students by purchasing their end products. Without customers, there could be no event.

The Guidance Officer’s Role

Assisting students to prepare for the future beyond school
At Charleville State High School, we are committed to supporting the academic, emotional, social, and vocational wellbeing of every student. As the Guidance Officer I play a vital role in ensuring that students are empowered to navigate school life with confidence and purpose.
In Queensland state high schools, Guidance Officers are highly trained professionals who are registered teachers, who must also have a psychologist or counsellors master’s degree. Guidance Officers work with the Leadership team, students, staff, and families to provide:
- Professional personal and emotional support
- Professional psychological assessments and referrals
- Professional social and behavioural guidance
- Professional support for students with diverse learning needs
- Professional career education and post-school transition planning
Guidance Officers are bound by confidentiality, ethical codes, and professional standards that ensure your child’s wellbeing is always the top priority.
For students in Years 10 to 12, the Guidance Officer plays a targeted role in:
One of the most important contributions the GO makes—in the senior years —is to help students plan and prepare for their future beyond school. This includes:
- Supporting career exploration through one-on-one conversations, interest inventories, and guidance interviews
- Assisting students to identify their strengths, interests, values, and goals
- Helping students understand pathways such as university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, and direct employment
- Working with the senior school team to ensure students receive accurate, up-to-date information about subject selection, ATAR eligibility, and vocational education
- Supporting the Senior Education and Training (SET) planning process in Year 10

I encourage both students and parents to engage with me throughout their high school journey. Whether your child is exploring future careers, facing personal challenges, or making decisions about their post-school pathway, the GO is here to support them every step of the way.
