Principal Report

Celebrating our students
I was so proud to walk through the pavilions of the Charleville Show and see the incredible achievements of the Charleville State High School Students. From our agricultural produce (our award winning tomatoes), to our artwork and our Hospitality students with their award winning chocolate cake and the student work which received recognition. This once again, highlights the incredible efforts of both our students and our teachers and our commitment to both education and community.

Principal Meeting
I recently attended the 2025 Principal Business Days in Toowoomba with my fellow Principal Colleagues from the Darling Downs South West Region. During the two days, we previewed the draft Strategic Plan that has been drafted by our Central Office team. This was presented by the Director General for Education, Sharon Shimming.
Our Regional Director, Helen McCullough reinforced the importance of knowing our students and our communities and being courageous in our leadership to ensure that every student is reaching their potential in our schools.
P&C Committee
We have recently had some changes to our P&C Executive committee. I would like to formally welcome Mr Shane Horrocks as our newly appointed Treasurer and Ms Tamara Heinemann as our newly appointed secretary.
Having a functioning Charleville State High School P&C means that we are able to run our uniform shop, support student learning with provisions of resources, support school excursions and camp and is also the body that runs our tuckshop.
The P&C, as a whole, shapes the strategic direction of our school and is a vital part of consultations processes for school policies and funding decisions. I encourage you to consider joining our P&C as a member so you can share your thoughts with us.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo

Unleashing Personal Potential: The Power of Human Connection
Last Wednesday, 20th May, all Year 7 students attended an excellent incursion about the power of social connection and the importance of Human Relationships.

We are delighted to work with Jenny Peacock and the HOPE Foundation to support every young person in Junior Secondary to recognise the importance of working collaboratively with their peers.
ICT and School Laptops in Junior Secondary
Every student in Year 7 and 8 now has a laptop provided to them, and with this new technology comes opportunities to learn as well as challenges about appropriate use of these computers in classrooms.
The skills are very much 21st century and lifelong; regardless of personal preference we are continuing to move into a digital world and regardless of future careers, our young people will be the generation whose lives will be most immersed in technology.
It is highly likely that by the time our Junior students are in senior years, at least some of the Year 11 and 12 assessment will be online.
Therefore, the challenge is learning to use the technology. As a result, there will be a focus on appropriate uses in classrooms and this is likely to be a topic of conversation at your dinner tables after school and on weekends.
During our PPP lessons on Monday afternoon, Year 7 and 8 students are learning how to setup these devices, including their school email signature.
Over the course of the next few weeks, students in Yr 7 and 8 will have explicitly taught lessons on:
- Keyboard shortcuts: week beginning Monday 26th May
- Games and safety: week beginning Monday 2nd June
- OneDrive setup and online storage: week beginning Monday 9th
As a school we monitor student use of laptops through a program called AB Tutor, where any inappropriate use of school devices can be monitored, and student behaviours are retaught.

Education Minister Visit
We were privileged today to be visited by the Minister for Education, John-Paul Langbroek. He was here to personally thank our students for supporting the SES and volunteers based in Charleville during the recent flooding by providing baked goods.

Deputy Principal – Senior School Report

We are already over halfway through term 2 and there is still a lot of things happening in the senior school before the end of term.
Year 10
- Assessment – Students should be finalising assessment tasks, working through their drafts for feedback and submitting their finished assessment, or exams before the end of term.
- Work Experience – The students will undertake a week of work experience during week 10 of this term. This means that all assessment will need to be completed by Week 9. This is being finalised by Angie Walton, with completing resumes and cover letters as part of the process. This will also form part of their Short Course in Career education where they will have to complete some tasks at their work site.
Year 11
- Assessment – Students should be finalising their assessment for Unit 1 of their subjects. They will receive an A-E grade on their report card, but the information that is forwarded to QCAA as part of their QCE will work on a different scale. For Year 11, the grade recorded towards their QCE will either be a satisfactory, or unsatisfactory. Every satisfactory that they achieve, is 1 point towards their QCE.
Year 12
- Assessment – Students will be finalising their Unit 3 assessment for their subjects and starting on their Unit 4 content. The students studying General Subjects will have their second piece of assessment sent away for moderation and confirmation on the 10th of June. Students studying Essential English and Maths, Sport & Rec and ISK will have their assessment quality assured in meetings at the start of next term.
- A reminder to those students that do study General Subjects that their final piece of assessment before the external exams will be due by week 6 of next term. This is to allow them time to revise for their external exam. We will be having mock exams to allow the students to experience the format of the exams. A copy of the exam timetable for external exams can be found on the QCAA site: https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/snr_ext_assess_timetable_2025.pdf
Other information
Shearing Camp
The next shearing camp will be held in Week 10 of this term. It is once again down in Dirranbandi. The information will be forwarded to the families of those students involved once it is finalised with the property where the students will be shearing.
Deadly Recruits Camp
This camp will also be held in Week 10, with the information already sent out to those students that wish to attend. Thank you to Bina for organising this for our students.
Cert II Health Services
The students undertaking this certificate through Connect N Grow will be having a week block training during Week 7. This will be held in C Block with Lyn again coming out to assist with the training for this course.
University Assistance
- Head Start Program – This is a program where the students are able to enrol in university courses whilst still at school. This is offered through UniSQ and Sunshine Coast University. This is open to Year 10 – 12 students with an application process. The stipulation from the universities is that the students are obtaining at least a B average for all of their subjects. This allows the students to complete university subjects at school. This will contribute to their QCE, as well as obtaining credit towards a possible future degree.

Meeting with UniSQ reps around Head Start Program
- Young Achievers Program – Our school has a partnership with the University of Queensland whereby they support some of our Year 11 and 12 students with a scholarship for senior and assistance if they then choose to study at UQ. All Year 10 families were emailed this information last week with how to apply. If you did not receive this information, but would like to, please contact the office.

ADF Visit – Week 5
On Wednesday of Week 5, representatives from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) visited our school to present to our senior students. The session provided valuable insights into the various career pathways available within the ADF for those considering a future in defence.
Our senior students represented the school with pride, displaying exemplary behaviour throughout the presentation. They upheld our school values by being respectful, responsible, and safe learners. Well done to all our seniors – your conduct was outstanding!

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
This month, our PBL focus is: We are responsible learners – we use technology appropriately.
That means using your devices in a way that supports your learning, respects classroom expectations, and keeps you on task. Whether you’re researching, completing work, or collaborating, technology should be a tool that helps you succeed – not a distraction.
Let’s all aim to make smart, respectful choices when it comes to tech use at school.
Remember:
‘Focused screens, responsible teens.’
Let’s show that we can be trusted to use technology the right way – with purpose, respect, and responsibility.”

Year 11/12 Hospitality BARISTA TRAINING
This term, the wonderful April and Taylah from The Milk Bar on Alfred, have been training the year 11 and 12 Hospitality students in the fine art of coffee making: flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes, hot chocolates, chai lattes just to name a few. Students have been very fortunate to have this fantastic opportunity and will use their newly acquired skills for their end of term project – a Bake Sale café for staff in week 8.
Many thanks must go to both April and Taylah, as well as Jenny Peacock from the HOPE program, for supporting and upskilling our students so professionally.

Year 11/12 Hospitality Teacher
Year 7 Home Economics
Our wonderful year 7 Home Economics students entered their felt Zenki creations in the recent Charleville Show, with many of them being very excited to see their work on display for the local community.
Well done to all students for getting in and having a go at mastering a new skill, and congratulations to Koa and Ella-May for winning second and third prizes, respectively.

Year 10 Hospitality
Our talented year 10 Hospitality students scooped the pools in the juvenile cookery category at the recent Charleville Show. Students were really enthusiastic to enter the competition and show off their baking skills. They were even more excited when they won prizes! Hopefully, this will inspire them to great things in their end of term assessment task – a Bake Sale for CSHS staff in week 8.
Huge congratulations to all students for taking part in a community event with such commitment. Great work everyone.

Readers Cup
This year Charleville SHS has four teams competing in the upcoming 2025 Reader's Cup Challenge. Each week they meet to talk tactics, discuss ideas and collaborate on creating their own study guides as they prepare for the competition.
Thanks to the generosity of the Charleville Library, our Readers cup team were surprised with gift packs to support their hard work and dedication in their preparation for the event. These packs put a smile on all their faces!
Thank-you so much to the Murweh Shire Library staff and our school nurse Mel for your support of our fantastic Readers!

Day For Dolly
Congratulations to all of our students - $143 was raised for 'Do it for Dolly'

Domestic Violence Month
May is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Month. This year’s theme is ‘Take positive action today to build a safer Queensland’. Our school is taking positive action by helping students learn about safe and respectful relationships, and assisting students and families impacted by DFV to access support. Visit the Queensland Government’s DFV prevention month web page to learn more about:
- DFV
- the support available
- how to help someone experiencing DFV
- the DFV prevention month activities taking place in our community.
Staff and students of CSHS were so proud to be to invited to take part in bringing awareness to DV month with these beautiful expressions of what love, safety and security means to them.
A huge thank you to the team at Lifeline and Far West Family Violence Service for all their hard work and continuing to strengthen our community partnerships. It takes an integrated service response to work in collaboration in addressing an important issue that impacts our community.
