Principal Report

Welcome to our first newsletter issue for Term 2. It has been a positive start to the term, one in which we will no doubt achieve great things through persistence, determination and commitment.
School Attendance
I want to acknowledge the incredible work that parents, families and extended support networks are already doing to support young people in attending school. We continue to focus on enhancing our attendance at Charleville State High School which is significantly below the state target of 92%.
We have been monitoring our data and have noted the significant number of students who are electing to sign out of school and those who are not attending until later in the day (without an approved part-time education plan). A number of students are missing key school events such as the colour run/cross country, ANZAC Ceremonies, PPP Classes and non-preferred curriculum subjects, which all contributes to our declining attendance.
As a school, we are working hard to support our students to gain the skills required to enter the workforce, which includes attending, arriving on time, completing set tasks and following reasonable instructions. We will continue to work with families to enhance students’ attendance and will also be working with key community organisations to enhance awareness of the impacts of poor attendance.
Charleville State High School Uniform
As the cold weather begins to arrive, please ensure that, in accordance with our Student Dress Code, all students are wearing the below endorsed uniform items:
- CSHS Jumper (purchased through the uniform shop)
- CSHS Seniors Jersey (senior students only)
- Plain black jumper
- Plain black pants/tracksuit pants
Students must have a broad brimmed hat for excursions, HPE & Agriculture classes to ensure that they are compliant with our sun safety policy.
Steel capped boots are only to be worn within Agricultural Classes and ITD classes, not as a school shoe.
We would also encourage students to ensure that all of their uniform items are clearly named to ensure we can return them should they be left at school.
Principal Meeting – Term 2
I will be attending the Principal Business Days in Toowoomba during Week 3, along with all Principals from the Darling Downs South West Region. The 2 days will focus on how we can continue to lift performance and ensure every child is reaching their potential. I will share further details about the content in an upcoming newsletter.
Kind Regards,

Academic Reporting Term 1 Review and Term 2 Goalsetting
Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be meeting with students in Junior Secondary based on their term 1 report card. Some of the data I will be using will be attendance, effort and levels of achievement. The solid focus is to provide support to achieve the best result that students can.
The strategies will focus on:
- Time Management and Assessment Submission
- Classroom Engagement
- Academic Support including Homework Club
- Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
Parents and carers are absolutely welcome to attend in person or be a part of the conversation over the phone. Every action plan will be communicated home.
PBL Focus in Junior Secondary
Our focus for the next four weeks is:
We will actively participate everyday by being organised and ready to learn.
What does this look like for students?
- Turning up on time and staying for the whole day
- Wearing our uniform with pride
- Having all our equipment for lessons – this may include ingredients or footwear appropriate for the relevant sport of activity, e.g. the Agricultural Plot
- Having our laptop charged to 100% overnight.
Queensland Department of Education Podcast: Dr Norman Swan's tips for parenting in the middle years.
In this podcast, Dr Norman Swan, award-winning broadcaster, journalist and author of ‘So You Want To Know What's Good For Your Kids’, discusses tips for parenting primary school aged children and preparing them for adolescence. https://on.soundcloud.com/hmcVFB6Ji1piSkeU8. While the messages are predominantly for parents of Primary School-aged children, the information on a range of topics such as screen time and anxiety, are pertinent for parents and teachers alike.

Senior School Update
Phones Away for the Day
A reminder that all students are expected to use their Yondr pouches to securely store their phones during school hours. Phones should be turned off, placed inside the pouch at the start of the day, and not accessed until students leave the school grounds at 2:55 PM. This policy helps to minimise distractions and ensures students are fully engaged in their learning.
Following Teacher Instructions and Expectations
We would also like to remind students and parents about the importance of following teachers' instructions and upholding classroom expectations. Respecting these guidelines creates a positive and productive learning environment for all students and supports their academic and personal success.
