Principal Report

Attendance – Term 1 Overview
I want to congratulate those Charleville State High School students who have achieved 95% + attendance for Term 1. We have 20% of our student population who are in this category. When looking at this data, the students with this level of attendance have also had great success in their learning, reinforcing the message that Every Day Counts.
We will continue to celebrate and acknowledge those students who have and continue to have high levels of attendance whilst also working with families to support enhanced engagement in school for those students who are not achieving attendance success.
Interim Reporting
It has been a privilege to review report cards in the recent days to view those students who have made incredible progress in their learning, a conscious effort to enhance their engagement and also those students who have committed to their effort.
Please be aware that as of 2025, schools have been required to revise the way they report on both effort and behaviour. This new scale is consistent throughout the state and complies with the National Education Agreement.
Please see the below explanations of the Behaviour and Effort scales.

I wish all families a safe and enjoyable easter break. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday 22nd April 2025.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo
Principal
Junior Secondary

Finishing Strong
Finishing strong was the theme of the last Junior Secondary Parade on Monday, 24th March, as deadlines loomed for our Junior Secondary students. I want to recognise the efforts of every young person who worked hard to complete assessments to the best of their ability, especially with the wet weather last week.
Several students received certificates for collecting starbucks:

Over the course of the last four weeks we have had 76 positive behaviour referrals – these are phone calls, emails or postcards home acknowledging students who are safe, respectful and responsible learners, and 38 students whose attendance this year so far is more than 90%.
Congratulations to the following Junior students who received awards for either positive behaviour or 90%+ attendance: Brydie, Eliza, Hope, Carter, Jensen, and Jazelle.
It is important to recognise Millie, Byron and Lyla, who have attended every single lesson every single day so far. It is an outstanding achievement.
No Opt Out
The phrase ‘No Opt Out’ is a consistent message that has been delivered through school in the last few weeks. At Charleville State High School, implementing No Opt Out fosters a culture of respectful accountability among junior secondary students. The strategy reinforces high expectations, encouraging students to engage with their learning rather than opting out when faced with difficulty. By requiring all students to participate and succeed, it builds confidence and resilience, ensuring that they understand that effort and persistence are valued.
This approach also supports a positive learning environment where students feel supported rather than shamed. For teachers, our respectful accountability is to use encouragement and structured guidance to help every student reach the correct answer or desired outcome.
NAPLAN Kudos – what do we do with the information?
Over the course of the last few weeks, 201 separate NAPLAN tests were attempted by the Year 7 and Year 9 students. Once again, the level of engagement and effort reflects students are committed to doing their best.
The results of these tests will be available at school from June, and the individual results will be communicated to you in term 3.
We will not share individual or cohort results to the public but we will use this information to inform skills and strategies for students to be successful into the future.
Upcoming Dates
Our School ANZAC event is taking place on Thursday, 24th April at 1.45 pm in the school hall. There is additional information later in this newsletter.
Kind regards

PBL: Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead
Welcome to Week 10! This week, we celebrated our students' hard work and positive behaviour with the Term 1 PBL Rewards Trip. Students had three exciting options to choose from—cooling off at the pool, battling it out in laser tag, or relaxing with a movie. It was fantastic to see so many students enjoying themselves and making the most of the experience!
The PBL committee is incredibly proud of all our students who have consistently met expectations, earned their Starbucks, and demonstrated respect and responsibility throughout the term.
As we plan ahead for the next three terms, we want to remind everyone of the eligibility criteria for PBL reward trips:
- Green Zone (0–1 major incidents): Automatically eligible.
- Yellow Zone (2–5 major incidents): Must submit a minimum of 10 Starbucks cards to qualify.
- Red Zone (6+ major incidents): Must submit a minimum of 10 Starbucks cards to qualify.
We encourage all students to stay focused, meet expectations, and aim for the best possible behaviour to ensure they can take part in these exciting events. Stay tuned for more details on upcoming rewards next term!
Senior School: Wrapping Up Term 1
Congratulations, Senior School—you’ve officially conquered the first term of 2025! As we wrap up our units and assessments, now is a great time to reflect on your progress. Think about what worked well, where you can improve, and how you can set yourself up for success next term. Don’t hesitate to chat with your teachers about strategies to enhance your learning and performance.
As we move into the rest of the year, remember that every day counts! Each lesson plays a crucial role in building your understanding and preparing you for assessments. Consistency is key, so stay engaged, stay on track, and make the most of every learning opportunity.
As the holidays approach, we encourage you to take a well-deserved break, recharge, and return refreshed for Term 2. Stay safe, enjoy your time off, and we can’t wait to see what you achieve next term!

Anzac Ceremony
We are looking forward to commemorating ANZAC Day at school this year and this is an overview of how students in the school will commemorate the anniversary both in school and the wider community.
On Wednesday, 2nd of April, there will be the first of two rehearsals taking place in the school hall. This will be an opportunity to familiarise our student leaders with and provide feedback on the draft script and presentation.
On Wednesday, 23rd April, the first week back after the Easter holidays, there will be the second of two rehearsals, ensuring everybody who has a role to play in the event is familiar with and confident in their role.
On Thursday, 24th April the ANZAC Day Ceremony takes place in the school hall at 1.45 pm. Every Senior Leader will be in formal school uniform, and every student’s uniform needs to be of the highest standard. All parents and community members are invited to attend.
Student work from the Year 10 History classes will form an integral part of the parade. Kudos to Amiee Dolman, Dani Stickler Blake Lucas and Katherine Neucom for this initiative.
On Friday, 25th April, there are two events at which our school will be represented:
- The Dawn Service starts at 5.15 am, and the School Captains and Vice-Captain will be attending.
- The Morning March will assemble at 9.20 am and begin at 9.40 am. I encourage every student leader, as well as every Charleville SHS student, to attend this march in school uniform.

Year 7 Home Economics
Yr7 did a fantastic job preparing, producing and presenting a healthy snack. They all did fantastic work and were very impressive in the kitchen.

Music – SHEP
SHEP, State Honours Ensemble Program, is a partnership between schools across Queensland and the Griffith University Open Conservatorium connecting young musicians with a team of conductors and teachers from Brisbane to help in their pursuits of musical excellence. Held in various locations across the state, our students have the opportunity to be nominated and attend the SHEP in Longreach.
Jakob, Ella and Grace represented Charleville State High School over the weekend in Longreach after being accepted into the strings ensemble program. After spending a day and half rehearsing to learn new music and how to play as a part of a larger ensemble of about 40 people, the trio performed with their peers in front of a hall full of people at the Longreach Civic Centre on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile Millie also represented the school in the vocal ensemble of about 30 students from across Western Queensland, learning new songs and vocal techniques while also learning to be part of a larger performing group for the same crowd of people.
All four were grateful for the opportunity to be part of their respective ensemble programs, be able to showcase their skills learned in school and extend them a little more. A shout out to Mr Mulhall who also volunteered his time over the weekend with the strings ensemble and provided the link to SHEP for our students.
