Principal’s Report
Welcome back
It is very exciting to have our students back from their mid-semester break ready to engage in the final term for the 2024 academic year.
Whilst we have a staggered end to the term, I will be continuing to encourage our students and work with families to ensure that we are prioritising high attendance. Part of the Term 4 focus will be on ensuring students are arriving at school on time. We have a number of students who are arriving well after the start of Period 1 which means they are not present for the learning intention, success criteria and initial teaching of the new content.
Lesson Observations
As part of my role at the instructional and strategic leader of the school, I spend significant time in our classrooms with our students and with our teaching staff. Whilst there are a multitude of reasons for being in classrooms, each term I dedicate a two-week period to formal observations of our teachers teaching. Post these lesson observations, teachers then engage in a feedback meeting to discuss strengths of their teaching and ongoing opportunities for support and development. These observations will be occurring during Week 2 & 3 of this term.
P & C Engagement - Why your voice matters
Recently, we have unfortunately had recent meetings when we have not reached a quorum within our Charleville State High School P & C Meetings. We are working on enhancing the communication and notice provided to parents and community members to provide more opportunity for engagement and participation.
Your voice within our P&C is vital, being a member and, whenever possible, attending meetings provides you with the opportunity to share your thoughts and feedback regarding key school decisions, policies and funding.
For example, throughout Term 4, I will be seeking feedback from our P&C regarding;
- Student Dress Code review
- 2025 Improvement Agenda
- Staffing Updates
- 2025 Budget planning
- Fundraising opportunities
Reporting & Term 4 CSHS Calendar
Report cards have now been distributed via both post and email. Within the mail-out envelope, you will also find a Term 4 Charleville State High School Calendar which we have put together to support you in being planned and organised for a number of key events that have been scheduled for the term. It is important to note that this is to be utilised as a guide and we will continue to provide updates close to events on our Facebook page, in our Charleville State High School Newsletter and via notes/permission forms being sent home.
We welcome your feedback regarding this calendar to determine if we will continue the creation and distribution of the calendar moving into 2025.
King Regards

WELCOME TO Term 4
Student Welfare
Queensland State Athletics
As I write this newsletter article, a year 8 student, Luis Martin, is preparing to travel to Brisbane to compete in the Queensland State Athletics competition. Luis is representing the school in 13 and under 100m sprint as well as the high Jump. Luis has the best wishes of the entire school community. He is already a champion. We know that he will represent Charleville State High well.
Special Performance
On Friday 4 October, the school had a special performance from two remarkable young men.
Romeo Gaykamangu is an awarding winning artist, a very cultural young man, singer songwriter, who uses music to tell the stories of his people, his life and the world around him. He believes that music and art are ways for young people to connect with their ancestors, know who they are and where they come from.
Jack "Baker" Gumbula - cousin of the Baker Boy, who taught him to rap in language - he is also a dancer and is very linked in to youth and helping them express their frustration at life through a heavier faster rap style.
Thank you to the Hope program and RESQ+ for organising the special performance.
SCHOOL GROUNDS
For safety reasons, please be aware that unless supervised, students/children are not allowed on school grounds outside of school hours.
Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS
Charleville State High School Technology policy clearly states that students are not to use their mobile phones on school grounds. Yondr Pouches are provided to all students to safely store their devices. The phones are not to be used until the students leave the school grounds.
The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone at school, then consequences will be placed. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age-appropriate material. Apps such as “SNAPCHAT” are used with the participants believing that their comments are private and will disappear. However, some individuals are screen-shotting conversations and adjusting the comments to appear that the other participants is “out of line”. This has been reported to the school on many different occasions with students from a wide range of year levels. Once again, I urge all parents to know what your student is sending and receiving on their mobile phone. Until the student is legal age, the parent is responsible for all content on mobile phones.
STYMIE
Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim” has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year level coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website (www.stymie.com.au ) to report any such issues.
Homework Club
Study/homework group meets on a Thursday afternoon which all students can attend. Students interested in attending this session need to see the office for the parent approval form.
Attendance
All students are expected to attend school each day, unless they are unwell. It is wonderful to see students who maintain their attendance above 90%. This is achieved by ensuring that they are not absent more than 5 days per term, ie 1 day a fortnight.
Thank you for your continued support of your student, the school and the educational process. If you would like any further information regarding the topics above please don’t hesitate to contact the school. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our future leaders.
Kind Regards,
Narelle Webb

Paddock to Plate
Dale Chapman was here to work with the Year 9 TFF students focussing on cooking what you grow. This will be an indigenous perspective, but will also incorporate the Food Ladder greenhouse.
This will be in the students’ planning at the start of the term, what they want to cook with, growing it in the greenhouse and using it in their cooking towards the end of term. This is an important component of the version 9 CARF.
Shearing Camp
Another successful Shearing Camp has been held with students at Warrego Park, Wyandra.
Thank you to our teachers and students for a great week.
Sun Safety Mural
Charleville State High School students submitted artwork into a Sun Safety mural competition last term. The students were asked to design a mural that represents being sun safe in the bush.
Our HOPE Program’s Jenny Peacock judged the winning design by student Lachlan Little.
With thanks to funding provided by Queensland Health Prevention Strategy Branch, artist Mark Paddick brought the winning design to life.
Mental Health Week
This week is Qld Mental Health week – an annual awareness event to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health.
This year, at Charleville SHS we are extending Mental Health Week until the end of October, to take some extra time to “Connect for mental health” and emphasise proactive measures we can all adopt to nurture and support positive mental health and wellbeing; as individuals, as a school, and as a community.
Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more updates, information, and competitions!
R U O K
On Thursday 12th September staff and students participated in a wear yellow free dress day to celebrate R U Ok Day, a National Day of Action to remind Australians to connect with each other, start a meaningful conversation and ask, “R U OK?”.
Students received yellow wristbands and enjoyed fabulous yellow pancakes prepared by Chappy, and our Wellbeing and Engagement team delivered wellbeing hampers to each staffroom – each to serve as a reminder that any day is a good day to check in with each other, and ask, “R U OK?”
