Principal’s Report
It continues to be an absolute privilege to work with the staff and students at Charleville State High School .
One of the absolute highlights in my recent weeks has been the opportunity to support our student leaders who attended the inaugural Murweh Shire Council Mayoral morning tea. I was incredibly proud of the way our leaders conducted themselves, engaged in the opportunity to speak with the Mayor and the Commissioner for Small Business – Dominique Lamb. All students wore their uniform with pride and used exemplary manners for the event. Congratulations to all involved.
Recently, I met with the CSHS P&C to continue working in partnership to enhance our school and identify opportunities to further develop outcomes and achievements for our students. As a school, we are very fortunate to have a highly engaged and passionate P&C group who work tirelessly to support our school. If you are not currently a member, I strongly encourage you to join.
I look forward to working with the School and the Charleville Community in the weeks ahead to ensure stability and support for all.
I wish all of our students, families and staff a safe, restful and rejuvenating break.
REMINDER: School resumes Monday 8th July.
Welcome to New Staff in Term 3
My name is Kara Holdom, and I am so excited to be joining the Charleville SHS community.
I’ve been teaching for 17 years, and have taught in both the NT and remote QLD, the Gold Coast, and now in the beautiful Darling Downs.
My partner Sean and our fur-child Ruby will be joining the party with me.
I’m a NSW supporter, only because maroon is not my colour. Sean is a dead set QLD’er, but despite that, we are getting married later this year.
I appreciate effort over achievement, meaning high expectations for having a growth mindset, making good mistakes, and you can expect a beautiful, welcoming learning space.
Guilty pleasures include Aero mint chocolate, binging sci-fi movies, tv series and reading.
We arrive next week, so we are looking forward to meeting people as we unpack and experience all the awesomeness the area has to offer.
Hello everyone, I am Bernadette Robinson. I am very excited to be joining Charleville SHS and the Charleville community. I have been a teacher for 10 years, and I am a dedicated educator with diverse experience in Special Education and Inclusion from high school to primary. I enjoy working with students of all ages, and I am especially looking forward to getting to know the students at Charleville SHS. Michael and I are relocating from Hervey Bay with our cats Puggle and Pip. I enjoy outdoor activities such as Park Run, camping, hiking and fishing. I also enjoy keeping a nature journal by drawing or sketching things I find on my travels. I am looking forward to meeting you all in Term 3.
Hey everyone, my name is Michael Robinson. I am very excited to be joining the community of Charleville. I am studying Astrophysics and Space Sciences at UniSQ. I am very happy to be working alongside the youth of Charleville as a teacher aide, encouraging them to be their best versions of themselves and strive for a better future together. I look forward to meeting you all in person in Term 3. Reach for the stars! Michael Robinson.
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea – Year 12 Hospitality
On Friday 31st May, our Year 12 Hospitality students hosted 24 guests from Healthy Aging to raise funds for the Cancer Council. This event also helped our students gain valuable catering and event management experience. The students served a high tea to our guests which consisted of a variety of sweet and savoury finger food, ribbon sandwiches and scones, as well as tropical punch and barista-made hot beverages. Total funds raised amounted to $3,374 and we thank our guests for their generous donations. A big thank you to our school staff who pitched in and helped the event run smoothly. Our students had a wonderful time hosting the event and we hope our guests enjoyed the afternoon!
Senior Schooling – News from the YLC
Uniform
Massive thanks to those Senior students who are consistently wearing appropriate uniform each and every day to school. There continue to be a very high percentage of our Seniors who show respect for the school, and themselves, by doing the right thing when it comes to uniform.
Just a reminder that students are required to wear the correct school uniform shirt at all times. They are also required to wear plain black bottoms (long pants, shorts, skirts) that are in good repair and not revealing. Jumpers are also required to be plain black, without large/obvious logos or trademarks. The school uniform shop has winter uniforms in stock for your convenience, or there are many on-line shopping options if you prefer (and the items will arrive in plenty of time for the start of term 3. Please remember – NAVY and GREY are NOT the new BLACK. Year 12 Senior jerseys have arrived, and the Seniors are looking very dapper in them.
Students who are out of uniform in any way are asked to provide a note from their parent/guardian/carer, outlining the reason for this. Alternatively, parents/guardians/carer are asked to phone the school and provide an explanation.
Students who are consistently wearing inappropriate items of clothing, without parental advice to the school, are required to participate in lunchtime detentions (15 or 30 minutes in duration, depending on number of uniform violations), leading to afterschool detentions should the need arise.
Arrival at school
All students are expected to be at school BEFORE the first bell rings at 8.45am so that they can be in their first lesson of the day on time. Punctuality is a habit that is valued in real life (work, appointments, public transport), so getting students to school on time is very important. Again, if students arrive late to school they must sign in through the main office, and should do so with a relevant explanation from parents/carers/guardians. Teachers will require students to complete any work missed, due to late arrival to class, during lunch breaks, or after school.
Once students have arrived on school grounds, including arrival on a school bus, they are required to remain on school grounds for the entire duration of the day, unless a parent/guardian/carer collects them from the office. This ensures that we know where students are, and can keep them safe.
Mobile Phones
As you know, all QLD state schools require students to have their devices “away for the day”. At Charleville SHS, this looks like students, who choose to bring their phones to school, turning their phones OFF and locking them in their provided Yondr pouches. If students are caught with their phones at school, not in their pouches, they are required to rectify this immediately. Students without pouches are required to hand their phones in at the office for the remainder of the day. Students who refuse to follow these instructions risk losing their phones for 4 weeks (in the initial instance), and 10 weeks (in the second instance).
Can all parents/carers/guardians please reinforce with their students that school is a mobile phone free space.
Laptops
As Seniors, all students in years 10, 11 and 12 have access to their own school laptop. This is an educational device, provided to ensure all students can complete required work and develop important skills in the use of technology. Unfortunately, there are a few students who try to take advantage of this privilege by playing games instead of completing their work. If students persist in doing the wrong thing on their school laptops, they risk loss of internet access and/or confiscation of their devices.
Year 12 Formal fundraising
As you have already been informed, this year’s Formal will occur on Wednesday 13 November, and planning for this event is well and truly underway. Our first term 3 fundraiser for the Formal will be our Athletics Carnival BBQ and Zooper Dooper Sale on Friday 26 July, followed by a night at the RSL raffle draw (Friday 2 August). Throughout term 3, there will also be another fundraiser where participants pay $2 in order to guess the amount of money stuffed into a jar (like How Many Jellybeans but with coins instead). Many thanks to Eldon Howard, who has donated this fabulous prize to the students.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns or queries about anything Senior School related, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If I don’t know, I will be able to refer you to someone who does.
Term 2 PBL Rewards Event
This Friday, 21 June, during lunch 2 and period 4, students have been invited to attend a Picnic in the Park (oval) event. A catered BBQ will be provided for students in the Green and Yellow behaviour tiers, and all students will be participating in some fun and enjoyable outdoor events to finish off the term. Permission notes were due back by 3pm on Monday 17 June (for catering purposes). Those students in the Red behaviour tier, or who did not return their permission form on time, will be required to provide their own picnic lunch items (remembering that soft drinks and energy drinks are banned at the school). Year 10 students will, unfortunately, miss out on this particular Rewards event, as they are out on Work Experience all this week, but can look forward to the term 3 Rewards Event. I hope that all students who are taking part in this event have a relaxing end to a very busy term.

Year 7 TFF (Home Economics)
It is with a very heavy heart that I bid farewell to the semester 1 year 7 TFF class, who will move into Art in semester 2. This term, students participated in a sewing unit, which saw them use their newly learned skills in order to construct and decorate a drawstring bag. The students really seemed to enjoy this activity, and produced some amazing end results (see images below). I look forward to a brand new group of year 7 students in semester 2, and know that we will have just as much fun in the kitchen and sewing room as we did in semester 1.

U/12 SW Touch Football
Congratulations to Brydie Lindsay who represented the South-West Region in the U/12's Touch Football team in Rockhampton in week 8.
This was such a great opportunity for Brydie to improve her skills and knowledge of the game of Touch football, while also learning about resilience and sportsmanship that's come with playing team sports.
Well done Brydie!
Girls Group – Term 2
This Term at Girls’ Group we have been exploring self-care, self-reflection and self-expression: journaling, smoothie-making, yoga, polymer clay jewellery masterpieces…plus end of term celebratory waffles, yum!! Huge thanks to all for attending, and an extra special thanks to Bonnie from the Neighbourhood Centre, Sam and Shubhi from Lifeline, and Mel our School Based Youth Health Nurse for leading and supporting our activities. Please enjoy the attached photos, and we can’t wait to see everyone back at Girls Group in Term 3! 😊 -Katie McLeod, Youth Support Coordinator.
