Principal’s Report
Dear Charleville Community,
I am pleased to step into the role of acting principal for term 2 and express my gratitude to the staff, students, and community for the warm reception I have received in the past two weeks. I am eager to build upon the excellent work being carried out at Charleville State High School in term 2.
As a leader, my primary focus is to support students in achieving success at school while ensuring they feel safe and valued. I firmly believe that effective communication between home and school is essential for student success. By maintaining open lines of communication, we can work together to address challenges, celebrate achievements, and ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive.
In October 2023, a school review was conducted, and we received valuable feedback from our school community. The infographic below encapsulates the key highlights of the review and outlines the strategic improvements to inform continuous improvement at our school. This review has helped us identify areas where we are doing well and areas for improvement.
As a result, our next step as a school is to develop a 4-year strategic plan. I am excited to work on this plan alongside our staff, parents, and students. Your input is crucial in shaping our priorities for the next four years, so we would love to hear your feedback. Please take a moment to fill out the short anonymous survey by clicking on the link below or scanning the QR Code:
Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Furthermore, I wish to emphasise the crucial role of school attendance in shaping students' educational journey. Each day of absence represents a missed opportunity for learning and growth, leading to lost learning days that can impact academic progress.
Lastly, I want to assure parents that my door is always open. If you have any questions, concerns, or simply want to chat about your child's education, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

WELCOME TO WEEK 4
As the weather is becoming cooler, please ensure that your student is in correct uniform. The black hoodie or school jacket is the preferred warm clothing however, any plain black sweater/jumper is acceptable. Blue jeans are not school uniform. If students prefer to wear jeans to track suit pants, an exception is made as long as the jeans are black and not blue denim. Detentions shall be handed out if students show a pattern of deliberately not wearing school uniform. If anyone is finding it difficult to supply their student with the correct uniform, please contact the school for support.
Student Welfare
Influenza Immunisation
All students should have received a consent form. Please have these forms returned as soon as possible. Any questions please contact me or our School based Youth Health Nurse.
SCHOOL GROUNDS
For safety reasons, please be aware that unless supervised, students/children are not allowed on school grounds outside of school hours.
Mobile Phones at Charleville SHS
The inappropriate use of a mobile phone at times is reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. If there is evidence that a student has used their phone at school, then consequences will be in place. It is the parents and carers’ responsibility to ensure that the student is receiving and sending legal and only age-appropriate material. Apps such as “SNAPCHAT” are used with the participants believing that their comments are private and will disappear. However, some individuals are screen-shotting conversations and adjusting the comments to appear that the other participants is “out of line”. This has been reported to the school on many different occasions with students from a wide range of year levels. Once again, I urge all parents to know what your student is sending and receiving on their mobile phone. It is not an invasion of privacy. It is good parenting. Until the student is legal age, the parent is responsible for all content on mobile phones.
STYMIE
Bullying in any form is not tolerated at school. However, it can be difficult to monitor as at times it is not reported until the “victim”, has retaliated. Please urge your student to talk to a teacher, Year level coordinator or Head of Department should they feel they are being bullied in any form. I would also like to remind our school community that students are available to make anonymous reports via the stymie website (www.stymie.com.au) to report any such issues.
Homework Club
Study/homework group meets on a Thursday afternoon which all students can attend. Students interested in attending this session need to see the office for the parent approval form, or check if this permission was given at enrolment interview.
Thank you for your continued support of your student, the school and the educational process. If you would like any further information regarding the topics above please don’t hesitate to contact the school. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our future leaders.
Kind Regards,
Narelle Webb
Deputy Principal
Senior Schooling – News from the YLC
Uniform
Massive thanks to those students in years 10, 11 and 12 who are consistently wearing appropriate uniform each and every day to school. There continue to be a very high percentage of our Seniors who show respect for the school, and themselves, by doing the right thing when it comes to uniform.
Just a reminder that students are required to wear the correct school uniform shirt at all times. They are also required to wear plain black bottoms (long pants, shorts, skirts) that are in good repair and not revealing. Jumpers are also required to be plain black, without large/obvious logos or trademarks. As the cooler months have arrived, now would be a great time to organise or purchase those plain black jumpers/long pants/jeans. The school uniform shop has plain black hoodies ($45 each) and plain black tracksuit pants ($35 each) for sale. Alternatively, there are plenty of other options at our local second-hand shops, or online. Please remember – NAVY and GREY are NOT the new BLACK. Year 12 Senior jerseys are due for delivery to the school within the next couple of weeks. I look forward to seeing these students decked out in their jerseys during this term and into term 3.
Students who are out of uniform in any way are asked to provide a note from their parent/guardian/carer, outlining the reason for this. Alternatively, parents/guardians/carers are asked to phone the school office and provide an explanation. Short-term uniform exemptions are available in these instances. If any parents or guardians of senior students require support or assistance with the provision of appropriate uniform items, please contact me urgently – I am more than happy to help in any way I can.
Students who are consistently wearing inappropriate items of clothing, without parental advice to the school, are required to participate in lunchtime detentions (15 or 30 minutes in duration, depending on number of uniform violations), leading to afterschool detentions should the need arise.
Arrival at school
All students are reminded to be at school BEFORE the first bell rings at 8.45am so that they can be in their first lesson of the day on time. Punctuality is a habit that is valued in real life (work, appointments, public transport), so getting students to school on time is very important. Again, if students arrive late to school they must sign in through the main office, and should do so with a relevant explanation from parents/carers/guardians. Teachers will require students to complete any work missed, due to late arrival to class, during lunch breaks, or after school.
Once students have arrived on school grounds, including arrival on a school bus, they are required to remain on school grounds for the entire duration of the day, unless a parent/guardian/carer collects them from the office. This ensures that we know where students are, and can keep them safe.
Mobile Phones
As you know, all QLD state schools require students to have their devices “away for the day”. At Charleville SHS, this looks like students, who choose to bring their phones to school, turning their phones OFF and locking them in their provided Yondr pouches as soon as they arrive on school grounds. If students are caught with their phones at school, not in their pouches, they are required to rectify this immediately. Students without pouches are required to hand their phones in at the office for the remainder of the day. Students who refuse to follow these instructions risk losing their phones for 4 weeks (in the initial instance), and 10 weeks (in the second instance).
Can all parents/carers/guardians please reinforce with their students that school is a mobile phone free space?
Laptops
As Seniors, all students in years 10, 11 and 12 have access to their own school laptop. This is an educational device, provided to ensure all students can complete required work and develop important skills in the use of technology. Unfortunately, there are a few students who try to take advantage of this privilege by playing games instead of completing their work. If students persist in doing the wrong thing on their school laptops, they risk loss of internet access and/or confiscation of their devices.
Year 12 Jerseys and Formal Fundraising
The year 12 Senior jerseys were ordered at the end of term 1, with a 5 – 7 week estimated production time. I am anticipating that these jerseys will arrive at the school sometime between weeks 3 and 5 of this term. I intend on contacting the suppliers (BrizLeavers) at the end of this week for an update, if the jerseys have not arrived by then.
Our term 1 fundraiser, the Easter Raffle was a huge success, raising over $1500 towards this year’s formal. I am pleased to say that all winners were relatives of our year 12 students. Emma-Lea Frost’s father won first prize; Joe McNamara’s sister took home second prize, with Georgia and Tori Castles’ grandmother thrilled to win third prize. I trust that all of our lucky winners enjoyed their Easter treats.
Our next fundraiser will occur on the afternoon of May 16th, when the year 12 cohort will be selling Zooper Doopers at our annual Colour Run event. I look forward to this being another successful enterprise.
Year 12 Formal
Following advice from the QCAA (finally), I am very pleased to be able to announce that we have a date for this year’s formal – Wednesday 13th November. The Charleville Racecourse has been booked and further details will be forthcoming. Please remember, formal tickets may only be purchased if all outstanding school fees have been paid.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns or queries about anything Senior School related, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If I don’t know, I will be able to refer you to someone who does.

ANZAC Day Ceremony
In follow up to our annual Anzac Day ceremony and march, I feel it is important to reflect on the remarkable display of respect and responsibility demonstrated by our students throughout both our school event and the wider community event. As the echoes of the Last Post faded into the distance and the gentle rustle of the wind swept through our school grounds, it became clear that our students had risen to the occasion with a maturity and reverence beyond their years.
We all know that Anzac Day means so much more to us here in Charleville than just the sacrifices of the past, our students stood shoulder to shoulder, embodying the values of respect, remembrance, and gratitude that lie at the heart of Anzac Day. Whether they were speaking their portion of the uniform resolution, laying a wreath or simply sitting respectfully listening to presenters all our students should take pride in the way they honoured the occasion, respecting the sacrifices of our Anzacs.
As I observed our students throughout the ceremony, I was struck by their focus and engagement on the proceedings. From the silence of the crowd during the moments of reflection to the students laying wreaths at the base of the cenotaph every gesture spoke volumes of their deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
As we move forward from this occasion, let us carry with us the spirit of Anzac Day - a spirit of remembrance, gratitude, and unity. May we continue to honour the sacrifices of our Anzacs with the same dignity and respect that our students demonstrated during our ceremony and move forwards together as a community to face whatever may come next for Charleville.
Lest we forget.
