Senior Captains
As this term continues to travel ahead, I’d like to remind students and their families that our homework club is available to all students seeking support from their teachers and staff with homework and/or their assessments. If students would like support, we ask that they chat with their teachers to ensure their availability during this time.
Finally, students and students will have their assessment calendars available from the end of this week. This will be handed to students as a hard copy, as well has digitally available both through our school website and Facebook page. Please be reminded that students and families are to work through their teachers if they require any further deadline information.

School Camp Update
Unfortunately, due to lack of student interest, the proposed year 10/11 Leadership Camp during week 10 of term 2, has been cancelled. Please contact the school office if you paid your deposit so that a full refund can be given.
Uniform
Following our first newsletter, there has been a marked improvement in the standard of uniform in the senior year levels – years 10, 11 and 12.
Just a reminder that students are required to wear the correct school uniform shirt at all times. They are also required to wear plain black bottoms (long pants, shorts, skirts) that are in good repair and not revealing. Jumpers are also required to be plain black, without large/obvious logos or trademarks. In preparation for the cooler months, now would be a great time to order those plain black jumpers/long pants/jeans). Please remember – NAVY and GREY are NOT the new BLACK.
Students who are out of uniform in any way are asked to provide a note from their parent/guardian/carer, outlining the reason for this. Alternatively, parents/guardians/carer are asked to phone the school and provide an explanation.
Students who are consistently wearing inappropriate items of clothing are required to participate in lunchtime detentions (15 or 30 minutes in duration, depending on number of uniform violations), leading to afterschool detentions should the need arise.
Arrival at school
All students are expected to be at school BEFORE the first bell rings at 8.45am so that they can be in their first lesson of the day on time. Punctuality is a habit that is valued in real life (work, appointments, public transport), so getting students to school on time is very important. Again, if students arrive late to school they must sign in through the main office, and should do so with a relevant explanation from parents/carers/guardians. Teachers will require students to complete any work missed due to late arrival to class, during lunch breaks, or after school.
Once students have arrived on school grounds, including arrival on a school bus, they are required to remain on school grounds for the entire duration of the day, unless a parent/guardian/carer collects them from the office. This ensures that we know where students are, and can keep them safe.
Mobile Phones
As you know, all QLD state schools require students to have their devices “away for the day”. At Charleville SHS, this looks like students, who choose to bring their phones to school, turning their phones OFF and locking them in their provided Yondr pouches. If students are caught with their phones at school, not in their pouches, they are required to rectify this immediately. Students without pouches are required to hand their phones in at the office for the remainder of the day. Students who refuse to follow these instructions risk losing their phones for 4 weeks (in the initial instance), and 10 weeks (in the second instance).
Can all parents/carers/guardians please reinforce with their students that school is a mobile phone free space.
Laptops
As Seniors, all students in years 10, 11 and 12 have access to their own school laptop. This is an educational device, provided to ensure all students can complete required work and develop important skills in the use of technology. Unfortunately, there are a few students who try to take advantage of this privilege by playing games instead of completing their work. If students persist in doing the wrong thing on their school laptops, they risk loss of internet access and/or confiscation of their devices.
Year 12 Jerseys and Formal fundraising
All year 12 parents/guardians/carers should have received an email, over the previous weekend, providing details regarding the Year 12 Senior Jerseys and our term 1 fundraising (Easter raffle). If you did not receive this email, please seek information from your year 12 student, or by contacting me at the school.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL JUNIOR SCHOOLING and JUNIOR YEAR LEVEL COORDINATOR NEWS
WELCOME TO WEEK 6
The first five weeks seemed to have passed at a rapid rate. We are so pleased to see most students working extremely hard in their classes and encouraged by the learning that is occurring every lesson.
JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
An integral part of our school pedagogical framework is that every student is informed of his or her Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. It is the expectation that each student writes the Lesson Objective in their books. As a parent, it is recommended that you ask your student to show you their four Lesson Objectives for each day. It would be a great conversation starter for parents to ensure that their students know what the learning objective is and prevents the often-short response to the question: What did you learn today? Response: Nothing. By discussing the Lesson Objectives each day, it helps the student remember the valuable learning that occurred in their classes.
Our staff are a wonderful group of dedicated professionals. In the past weeks at their faculty meetings, they discussed the data already collected on every student. This included their most recent diagnostic data as well as Academic data. This data is useful to plan units, lessons and support for each student. It is a method of Putting Faces to the Data and valuing each student as an individual.
IMMUNISATION CLINICS
- Immunisation Clinics for Years 7 and 10. This term, immunisation clinics were held for every eligible year seven student and some of the year ten students. Those who miss out will have the opportunity for a catch up early in term 2. I would like to thank the team from Queensland Health who carry out this important service to ensure all of our students are well protected.
- Another immunisation will take place in May. This year we have two organisations supporting the school in immunising our students. The first is Tackle Flu. Tackle Flu gives every indigenous student the opportunity to be immunised against influenza. Unlike in past years, this year all students will have the opportunity to be immunised. Queensland Health has an initiative to immunise all remaining students. We urge all families to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Especially given the severity of the Influenza strain that appears to be doing the rounds this year.
HEALTHY DRINK OPTIONS
Students are encouraged to bring water bottles into the classroom. It is essential that they keep hydrated throughout the day, especially in the hot summers of Charleville. It has been brought to our attention that a number of students are arriving at school drinking energy drinks. It has been noted that drinking energy drinks prior to the school day beginning is not always a positive choice.
STUDENTS WITH MEDICAL NEEDS
A reminder to parents/carers to notify the school about your child’s health
If you receive a referral form from the school with regard to your child’s medical needs, please return them as soon as possible. If your child requires an ACTION PLAN for a medical diagnosis, please supply the school with an up-to-date plan as discussed with your doctor.
MOBILE PHONES
We have had a very positive and supportive response from the community regarding the changes to the Charleville SHS mobile phone policy handed down by the Queensland Government. The new “Away for the day” procedure allows all students to remain in possession of their phone, but have it secured inside their own personal Yondr pouch so it is not a distraction during the school day. Almost all students have been very responsible and have taken to using their Yondr pouches during school hours.
In past years and already this year, the inappropriate use of mobile phones has been reported to the school, however the majority of times the mobile phone is used outside of school hours. Please carefully consider your young persons’ best interest and the amount of time they use digital media. I urge all parents to know what your student has stored on their phone, what they receive and what they send. As the students are not allowed to sign contracts until they are 18 years of age it is the parents’ responsibility to monitor all digital use. It is also important to remember that the fine print of many social media platforms also requires that users be over 14 years of age before they create a profile.
There are methods to monitor your child’s mobile phone use. There are apps in which a parent can responsibly control the times in which the phones can be used. “Our Pact” is one example of the numerous apps available. If you are aware of other such apps that will help support the students to safely use social media and mobile phones, I would be more than happy to share the information with others.
YEAR 7 CAMP
As we head towards the end of term 1, we are moving ever closer to our Year 7 team-building camp to Fairbairn Dam Outdoor Education Centre. The camp is in Week 10 of Term 2 and organisation for the event is in full swing. For those who have returned their expression of interest and paid their deposit, keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a more in depth note that will come home. It will include a packing list and possible activities the students can look forward to while they are away as well as dates for final payment and any adjustments in costs after final numbers and fundraising has been taken into account.
Until next time,

Charleville SHS and Charleville District Swimming Carnival
The annual swimming carnival was held on Friday, 2nd of February, to once again determine which house would have bragging rights for another year. It was also a chance for the swimmers to achieve qualifying times to allow them to compete in the South West Regional Swimming Trials for possible selection into the regional team for the State Championships.
With the theme set around the beach, there were plenty of costumes on display, both by the students and the teachers. To add to the fun of the day, there was also a best belly flop competition. There were some sore stomachs after this event, but Jesse was declared the winner. His stomach was still a little tender for quite some time after. But let’s talk about the serious business of the day, determining a winning house.
Champion House
It was a close carnival, with all three teams at some stage leading the points. However, at the end of the day, it was Alamein clearly ahead of Kokoda and Tobruk. Well done to all of the students that came and participated, or cheered on the day, it was a great success, with only positive things said about our students. Some of the students a little brighter than others and we would like to recognise their achievements. Those who broke records, were age champions and those who met the qualifying times to go to the regional trials are listed below.
Records Broken
There were a number of records broken on the day, some by the other schools, but also a few by our students. The new records are:
- Girls 14 Years 100m Freestyle – Tahnee Reynolds
- Girls 18 Years 100m Freestyle – Tori Castles
- Boys 13 Years 100m Freestyle – Harry Thomas
- Boys 16 Years 100m Freestyle – Declan Ryan
- Boys 12 Years 50m Freestyle – Malakai Thompson
- Boys 12 Years 50m Backstroke – Malakai Thompson
- Boys 18 Years 50m Breaststroke – Rory Williams
- Boys 13 Years 50m Butterfly – Charlie Sullivan
- Girls 14 Years 200m Individual Medley – Tahnee Reynolds
A special mention must also go out to Charlie, as the butterfly record was one that had stood since 1986.
Age Champions
The Charleville High School age champions for the day were:
- Girls 12 Years – Sienna Baldwin
- Girls 13 Years – Kahli Wilson
- Girls 14 Years – Tahnee Reynolds
- Girls 15 Years – Alexah Little
- Girls 16 Years – Ellie Lonergan
- Girls 17 Years – Madalynn Shearwin
- Girls 18 Years – Tori Castles
- Boys 12 Years – Malakai Thompson
- Boys 13 Years – Harry Thomas
- Boys 14 Years – Quaide Williams
- Boys 15 Years – Paddy Short
- Boys 16 years – Lincoln Wilson
- Boys 17 Years – Tyler Wilson
Regional Trials
From this carnival, a number of students were selected to compete in the regional trials in Miles, last Friday, 23rd of February. There were a few that scratched from the team, but 4 from the high school went to compete. Malakai Thompson, Cooper Capewell, Tahnee Reynolds and Eliza Toms competed on the day, with a number of improvements on the times that they swam at Charleville. At this stage, Malakai Thompson is the only student selected for the South West team. Others may be contacted at a later stage. A big congratulations to Malakai for making the team.
2024 Swimming Carnival
Girls’ Group
Girls’ Group has begun!! The aim of Girls’ Group is to provide a safe, positive and healthy environment for girls in which they can access a variety of community support agencies as well as school support staff to assist with social and emotional wellbeing (and have a whole lot of fun!). This term at Girls Group we are lucky enough to have Bonnie from the Neighbourhood Centre and Sam and Shania from Lifeline with us – we will be doing some awesome craft activities, games, and exploring journaling. Later in the year we will also be jewellery making, cooking, gardening, and exploring international foods, just to name a few! It’s not too late to join in - girls of any age are most welcome, just grab a consent form from the Office or contact Katie (Youth Support Coordinator) for more information. We meet Tuesdays (except the first and last weeks of each term), 3-4pm, at the Wellbeing Centre (C Block).
Tradies’ Club
Tradies’ Club kicked off last week, with some great projects in the planning stages already! Tradies’ Club is open to all boys, providing a safe, positive and healthy environment in which they can access school support staff to assist with school engagement and social/emotional wellbeing, whilst developing both technical and social skills. ITD teacher Mr Shane Needer, and Social Worker Mark Vaggs will be instructing and supporting students to work on meaningful hands-on projects, involving mostly woodwork and basic construction skills on the boys’ projects of choice. We’ve made foldable camp chairs, fishing rod holders, pen holders, trinket boxes, chopping boards and billy carts, just to name a few! Tradies’ Club meet on Tuesdays (except the first and last weeks of each term), 3-4pm, at the Wellbeing Centre (C Block) for arvo tea and then head on over to the workshop. It’s not too late to join – boys of any age are most welcome anytime, please grab a consent form from the Office or contact Katie (Youth Support Coordinator) or Mr Needer for more information.
Flying Science Visit
Last week two of our wonderful Flying Scientists flew out to Charleville to visit their amazing community and run a free, fun science event at the Charleville Cosmos Centre! We run our Flying Scientists program in partnership with the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist, and were privileged enough to have Professor Kerrie Wilson attend! We are so grateful for the engagement and support we received from the community, with over 90 people attending.
Dr Tina Skinner and Alise Fox also visited the students at Charleville State High School and Charleville School of Distance Education where they ran educational activities from surveying underwater using underwater paper, to learning about how to manage a fishery and sustainable practices.
Thank you so much to the amazing Charleville community and especially to Alex from the Charleville Cosmos Centre for hosting our event!

Queenland Women’s Week
We celebrate Queensland women all year round, but this is a special time of year. This year’s theme, Count Her In aligns with the United Nations International Women’s Day theme of ‘Count Her In – Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress’ which highlights the critical importance of women’s economic empowerment being fundamental to realising women’s rights and gender equality. To find out more visit www.qld.gov.au/womensweek
In 2024, Queensland Women’s Week will run from 3-10 March, expanding on International Women’s Day on 8 March. On that day, Queensland women join millions of others throughout the world to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of women in the past, present and future.
Charleville State High School GP Clinic
We know how important it is to support our students’ physical and mental health, which is why our school is proud to be providing students with free access to healthcare at school through our participation in the Department of Education’s GPs in Schools Pilot.
As you know, Dr Katie Chang and Dr Paul Chang from Acacia Country Practice, joined the Pilot at Charleville SHS in June, 2023. Dr Katie and Dr Paul provide a free GP service for students each week on an alternating basis, for any physical, mental, or sexual and reproductive health concerns. Our school’s GP clinic is open every Tuesday during term time between 8.30am – 2.30pm.
Medical Student
This year, at various times, Dr Katie is going to have a medical student accompany her at the school GP clinic as part of the student’s medical training. Clinic placements provide medical students with the opportunity to apply their studies and develop their skills and knowledge for becoming a medical practitioner. It is common place for medical students to complete placements in a variety of healthcare setting, including community-based clinics.
When the medical student is with Dr Katie in the clinic, Dr Katie will obtain consent for the medical student to be present for the consultation. This consent will be obtained from the student’s parent, or from the student in cases where the student is able to provide their own consent, prior to the appointment commencing.
Providing students with a safe and supportive environment in which to access Dr Katie’s services continues to be the most important priority for our school and Dr Katie. If any student or their parent does not wish to have the medical student present during their appointment, Dr Katie will completely understand and an appointment will go ahead with Dr Katie on her own.
Parents/students are encouraged to talk to Sue Swords for more information or to make an appointment.
Appointments can be made for every Tuesday during school term. To make an appointment:
- Go toacaciacp.com.au and book online through Hot Docs link
- Phone Acacia Country Practice on 4599 7658 (let them know it’s for Charleville SHS clinic)
- Phone School Office on 4656 8888
- Email admin@charlevilleshs.eq.edu.au or
- Do a walk-in on the day.
